Cali 1400 - I Think I'm Done for Now
« on: June 29, 2014, 10:08:47 AM »
I think I have my Cali 1400 the way I want for right now:

MG Sport Screen:

Agostini Carbon Fiber Fuel Injector Covers (replaced the metal ones that get a little hot):

Hepco-Becker Strayker Bags with C-Bow mounts:

May think about a Corbin seat sometime so the bike is more comfortable for my riding companion.

And maybe these:

Very nice, and thanks for the photos. Can you share a picture of the bike without the bags? I'd like to see what those brackets look like. If not convenient, no problem.

For what it's worth, I'm on the waiting list for the all-black "leather touring" seat from Moto Guzzi--I'll provide photos and comments when I get it. But it has to arrive in this hemisphere first...

Nice bike  ;-T Looks as though Austin is receiving ample rain fall . The old saw re th e seasons in that part of Texas must still be true . "Hot , followed by hot and wet " :D
   Dusty

Actually, I tell people there are two seasons in Austin:  Summer and January.

We are having one of those rare damp spring/summer.  Doubt if it lasts much longer, but for now the countryside is a beautiful green.

How is the "cedar fever" this year ? I love Austin but my allergies don't .
   Dusty

Cedar won't hit for a few months, but everything else is in full tilt.  That's the downside of a green Central Texas.

I like the H+B bags, but it's a real shame about the 'tilt' built into the C-bow mount.  Kind of messes with the long horizontal line of the Cal 14...

Yup, looks great and probably how I would set mine up too!

That said, I think I might check how to level those c-bows, maybe an adapter to move/tilt one of the mounting points.

Still, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

The shields do make a difference.  The metal ones get hot enough you wouldn't want to touch them with a bare hand.  The carbon fiber ones get warm but won't burn you.

Unfortunately the way the C-Bows are made there really is no way to do that. The bolts screw into a cap welded to the back of the bow.

The mounts themselves are a very precise fit to the bike. (These guys really build quality stuff).  It would take someone who is much more skilled than I am with a grinder, torch and welder to modify the angle.

But could you pivot the whole assembly by extending or shortening the mounts themselves? I.E. pivot the bow and adjust how the bow mounts connect to the bike with extensions or adaptors.

Bike looks great! Can you let us know where you bought your add on's? I'm thinking about the smaller top box for my next mod, followed by exhaust. Can anyone tell me who has changed exhaust, if a fuel manager is needed when you do swap out the factory for an aftermarket exhaust? Sorry to ask in your thread.

The demo California Custom that I rode at Matthews Fun Machines had the Mistrals in matte black, db killers in.  They sounded glorious.

I like what you've done with the bike.  The bags are growing on me, but I wish the factory bags were quick-release.

Modifying the mounts would require skills well beyond mine.  Here's some detail mount pictures.

The top mounts bolt into existing threaded holes in the fender support frame.

The lower mount bolts to the exhaust hanger.

So the basic mount really can't be moved.  You could theoretically cut the actual connection points off the mount and re-weld/replace them, but you have to do both sides because of this:

There are two mounting bolts at the back of the bow and two more at the front of the bow that attach the bow to the base frame so it's not a simple case changing one mounting bolt.  Hepco-Becker did their homework on these things.  They are really sturdy.  I suspect you could almost wrap a tow rope around the C-Bows and pull a Harley Street Glide out of a road ditch.

Thanks for those.

Ironically I was just reading the installation PDF that I'd downloaded from the HB site trying to figure that out.

Cut and re-weld would be neatest.

But I still wonder if you could make little extension brackets using aluminum stock - bolt one end of the extensions to the bike, other to the rack. Make the distances of each just enough to pivot the assembly level.

Might be tight around those fender mounts though, I'm guessing an extension might not work on the front one, you might have to modify the fender or bend the existing mount as it would be raised up by the pivoting of the rest. I really can't tell from the photos.

And depending on how little you need to rotate it, you might not actually have enough room to do it - the thickness of the bolts themselves being the minimum you could pivot it, and that might be too much angle.

So it would be back to cut and weld and might not be worth the effort at that point, cause they look decent enough as is.

Thanks again for taking the time and posting.

It looks like from your pictures that there are only two mounting points for the frame.  Is that correct?  If it is, you could have the rear mounting point cut and rewelded to correct the angle.

The frame fit to the bike is very precise - no real give anywhere.  The directions are pretty sparse regarding how to mount.  You cannot successfully mount the frame if you follow the exact steps.  I spent about 30 minutes trying to mount them up following the steps before I gave up did what seemed intuitive.  Took me 10 minutes mount the second side.

The only option I would see is to modify the angle of the brackets on the bags themselves, which could actually be done pretty easily.  Unfortunately you would have to drill about 5 new holes in each bag, leaving you with holes you would have to fill - not an optimal solution.

Here is a picture of Lucian's bike.  You can get these bags in all black.  They actually look pretty good on the bike.

I thought about that as option, but didn't want something that big.

In reality, the angle on the Straykers is not nearly as offensive in person.
