NGC Recommendations for Great Guy movies
« on: January 01, 2015, 08:37:34 PM »
OK, so I'm trying to pull together an excuse for "guys night out" for my married buddies. My idea is "the Testosterone Film Festival".  It will rotate from one man cave to the next, and the host can choose, but the requirement is that it must be an iconic guy movie. Doesn't mean it has to be mindless explosions. Basically, if you had a 13 year old son and wanted to set some role models, you could give him a list and he'd pretty much get it. The following are obvious examples. Just for fun- what would you all select? I'm running a bit dry finding modern actors/movies that fit the bill- so help me there.

The Magnificent Seven                 Yul Brynner, McQueen, Bronson, James Coburn, Eli Wallach  -Faggedaboutit!
The Great Escape                         extra points if you can whistle the theme song
Bridge on the River Kwai              ...speaking of whistling
Cool Hand Luke                            the egg eating scene is unforgetable
Scarface                                       "I only got two things- my word and my balls. ..and I don't break 'em for nobody"
Animal House                               "Seven years of college down the drain"
Goodfellas                                     "You're saying I'm funny? Funny like a clowwn?"
Alien                                              controversial, but Sigourney Weaver is pretty damn tough
Strangelove                                   "There'll be no fighting in the War Room!"
Road Warrior                                  "Ya wanna get outta here? Ya talk to me"

It's my favorite movie of all time, but I'm demented.

Now we're talking. Blackcat- thx. You are a natural and would be selected as a visiting lecturer should you find yourself in the area (I had almost all of yours on my list)

Lannis- Good call. Josey Wales features .36 Colts in supporting roles. I always liked the looks of them.
Unforgiven- Undeniably in the top 5 Westerns of all time.

Time rider. a very good motorcycle western. The  T V version is easy to find but the original version is maybe impossible to find, and the ending is much better.  One of the best over looked movies out there. Flash Back is another great movie that was never advertised much.

I don't think these have been mentioned yet:

The Hunter - Steve McQueen's last film.

Kelly's Heroes

Stripes

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

The Blues Brothers

Die Hard

Repo Man

Gone in 60 Seconds (the original)

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Then again, when I was watching Predator I didn't think two members of its cast would become governors, either. So you never know.

That was on Netflix last year.  Good flick.

Add to the list

"Last Man Standing"  Bruce Willis travels through depression era Texas to lay low for a while.  Instead he lands in the middle of an Irish / Italian gang war.  If you're a fan of Willis and Colt 1911s, this is the flick for you.

Good film. Have to visit someday.

If a film has Brendan Gleeson in the cast I almost always try to see it.

Excellent call. That and "28 hours" were both GREAT.  Danny Boyle is a gifted director. Good example of how you don't need a huge bugdet and explosions to make a good movie.
