Here in my home town there is a CX650 Turbo leaned up against the back of someone's out building, been there for ten years or so.

Almost sorry I pointed out the custom CX500 in the first place!

I just think it's a nice-looking vehicle, as customized. I wouldn't touch one of the originals at this point with a ten foot pole, stylistically.

But the custom CX500 would be a non-starter in my little garage, since I have better bikes for riding in my Griso and T-3, in my opinion.

I'd definitely enjoy giving this a look if it were parked in front of a store. I expect someone will want it, but not necessarily a Guzzi rider, and not necessarily at the asking price.

Don't be sorry, it is what happens. Mention anything and immediately it is compared to a _______ Moto Guzzi and 100 reasons why it isn't as good or who would want such a thing.

That is a really nice looking CX and I bet the owner has had some real fun riding it. Millions of people ride something else other than a Moto Guzzi and have a great time doing so.

I've looked at those Hondas a few times because they are different and have push rods.I've seen a few stripped down into a bobber or cafe bike that looked nice.....I do the land speed racing ( Triumph 650) and there's a few Honda CX bikes in the 500 and 650 cc push rod classes normally dominated by old Brit bikes, especially Triumph. One guy has a partially streamlined 500 and 650 record at El Mirage but for the most part the Triumphs have their ground...
The 80 degree V engine in theory is as smooth as a 90 degree with less "rocking" at low speed....

That's a nice looking package with those exhaust. Spoked wheels would look nice but probably not worth the effort. In any case, it's not trying too hard and still coming up short like so many "cafe" or "bobbers" do. A very complete looking result.

Trav- that is a sweet looking little ride.  Did you make the seat/tail section yourself?

I second that. The shock mount form-outs are the type of thing which sets a craftsman/artist apart from the hacker/pounder. Very sweet, that.

My friend, Lee, painted the bike and made the rear seat piece out of fiberglass using a trashed Ducati RT450 tank.

Thanks for the compliment.  My friend did put a spoked wheel from a CB500 on the front of his CX500.  However, he found it easiest to put the entire CB500 front end onto the CX500.  He never did get around to putting a spoked rear wheel onto his bike though.  It would have required a lot of custom machining including making the specialized hub that would work with the shaft drive.

The CX500 is a sweet running little bike.  It is a little heavier than the CB500/CB550's of the 70's, but it has significantly more power.  It really is nothing like a Guzzi.  It doesn't really have a lot of torque, it relies more on rev's.  Someday I'd like to found the 678cc engine out of the 1983 CX650 Custom and stick it into this bike.

Interesting to note. My only experience was the final evolution of a 650T. I did though, have a couple of pals who put themselves through college (or university as those lingui-throwbacks call it -evolve damn you!) as dispatch/package riders and they loved it as a workhorse. Called it something like a slug or toad or something like that but had great respect for the design. Another side benefit was that, given their reputation, they were impervious to motorcycle theft which was and still is at an insane level in the U.K.

On early ones, the ignition was totally isolated so a failure anywhere else in the system would, should, might still allow the bike to be push-started to get home... in daylight. Too bad they failed so badly.

I don't recall ever having done this sort of thing, but I'm feeling a compulsion to post this interesting, and I think very attractive, near-a-Guzzi, for sale near me:

http://madison.craigslist.org/mcy/5433127582.html

(I'm not too fond of the seat, but that could be changed.)

It reminds me of a Honda 450 in size and stance, but with our favorite engine configuration.

What say you all?

Moto

P.S. I just noticed the seat is said to be made by "National Guzzi." Anyone have any idea what that is?
Well maybe to some, but the bars not very high at the end of the day is it.

Some really nice examples there

I've always had a hankering to get one, but I'm still a long way to go with the sport 1100 build

Anyway I posted this up on a previous CX thread and I reckon it takes a bit of beating

Couple of friends near me are into these bikes. They like the GL engines better. Fewer problems, better ignition and charging. They adapt mono shock rear suspension and modern front forks. They went to the drag strip last weekend and ran low 13sec. The Turbo 650 is fuel injected.

Yes that bike above is the sweetest custom CX or GL ever made. They got the stance just right.

Honda should bring that bike out as a production model.

Looks like it's going in a nice direction and again, I like exposure of that pretty final drive - uncluttered by exhaust.

I was looking to buy a CX500 last year because I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get my hands on a proper V7 at the time. That being said, they are rather pricey even when crusty, the cheapest I found in my neck of the woods being in and around $1000 for something that frankly, looked like it needed a total rebuild. In any case, what inspired me at the time to look at one of these was Clockwork Motorcycles in Montreal, Quebec:

No argument here, great looking Bike.

I bought a CX500EC (Euro Sport, same as the Turbo looks-wise, but without the Fairing) in '82, only Bike I've ever bought new.
Nice Bike, just a bit gutless two-up.
The originals quickly became THE Bike to have for Despatch/Courier Riders in the UK, alongside the Kawasaki GT550/750s.
Doc out . . .
