If you were paying attention, it was all the same show.  So I agree with RinkRat -- it's a trick question and the answer is Suzanne.

The character Bob Hartley was a psychologist (a phD), not a psychiatrist (who is a medical doctor).

Suzanne Pleshette was a stone-cold fox...

She was on a Johnny Carson rerun the other night.  Yep- she was stunning.  Married to Tom Poston.

Watching the reruns of the Tonight Show is almost depressing, to me, to realize that all of the great actors and personalities that we grew up with are no longer with us.

Suzanne was the hotter, altho his innkeeper wife was also very desirable. I never watched the earlier Newhart much, as we only got one channel on the TV and that wasn't it. By the time the second Newhart came along, I had moved to the big city (Hot Springs, AR) and got 3 or 4 channels.

Bob's not here!!

I use to tend bar in Chicago. We had a gaggle of old timers that all sat along one dogleg end of the bar. The bar owner gave them their own TV and a remote. You did. not. mess. with. newhart. We all understand why.

I have long been a big fan of Bob Newhart and his dry humor.  The man is a genius.  Both Newhart shows were hilarious; different, but funny with their own set of characters that made you laugh.  Bob Newhart always understood that he should not be the scene-stealer in these shows and created characters to spread the humor around.  And it worked!  I have the Psychologist Newhart show set to record the episodes on our Tivo machine that appear each week on one of the cable channels.  Even though the episodes are very old and I've seen them many times, I never tire of watching and laughing along with Newhart and his zany characters like Jerry, Howard, Emily, Mr. Carlin, Mr. Herd, Mrs. Bakerman, etc. etc.
*And yes, Suzanne WAS a major looker.  I saw her interviewed on Johnny Carson & other talk shows (way back when) and she had a very wicked sense of humor.  I loved it when she eventually married Tom Poston who was another comic genius with his dry wit and delivery.

Having an "... other brother Todd" in my family, I'm no fan of the Lodge Newhart if only for that reason.

But who needs that for an excuse if Suzanne's in the mix?

I was listening to some show or other on NPR fairly recently and learned something that I never knew about Newhart. He won three Greammies in 1961:
Album Of The Year agains Nat King Cole, Harry Belafonte and Frank Sinatra as contenders.
Comedy Album/Spoken word against Carl Reiner/Mel Brooks and Jonathan Winters
And Best New Artist.

Go figure.

That's one of the funniest things I've ever seen in TV.  When I was on Vashon Island last month I had my hosts find it on u-toob to explain what "Newhart" was in a nutshell.

I read somewhere that they did the scene 'straight' and also drunk.  The actual drunk scene is the one the went with.

I saw Newhart for the first time as an extra on COMBAT!.  He was playing a radioman on the phone in the background while the stars played out the scene for the camera.  He was doing the same signature phone routine he did in his shows, with the stammering, confusion, facial expressions, and timing, and was probably just supposed to be set dressing.  Even as a kid watching a shoot-em-up complete with Vic Morrow, it was Newhart's "straight man" comedy tucked away in that dark corner of the set that caught my attention.

I saw Newhart for the first time as an extra on COMBAT!.  He was playing a radioman on the phone in.

In a weird connection to Steve McQueen like my above photo of Suzanne with McCool from Nevada Smith, Newhart does his telephone routine in what I think was his first movie: "Hell is for Heroes" with McQueen.

If I remember it correctly, the Americans determine that the Germans have been listening in to their bunker conversations and plans from an unknown hot communication line left over from the front lines shifting. They set Newhart (Corporal someone) down to a fake field phone for some deceptive, one sided communications designed to make the Germans believe that there were more than a half-dozen men there. Fun to watch knowing that the situation is dire (this is not a standard, flag waving get-your-gun war pic) and yet the scene is dominated by Newhart's signature gag.

The movie came out near the time he won those Grammy nods noted above.
