Trike update #3
« on: July 14, 2016, 07:57:58 PM »
checking in from Souix City, SD, having done I84 to mid-Nebraska and then north to Yankville, on account of who the hell names their town yankville?

No major problems.  I continue tweaking.  Minor issues include a leaking left stub shaft (axle) seal on the differential, and sputum from the frame 'vent' misting the TB linkage and items proximate.

I've been fighting low rpm roughness since the bad fuel incident too.  Tweaking the idle air screws is helping, but the right handle still feels buzzy, and one side is definitely hitting harder.  Problem is mitigated if I lay down the hammer, and goes away at 45mph.  By 50 it's smooth.  Thoughts?

70-75mph cruising if road surface allows and I don't care about economy.

Hope to be in St Paul tomorrow.  Brad?

No particular destinations except my daughter's house in St Paul for a visit.  I might do an intermission -- find somewhere to park the trike for a few weeks while I fly back to Sitka and pack up my kit.  Then rejoin the trike and the trip.

I ended up in Sioux City dodging lines of thunderstorms in NE that pushed me north.  It wasn't really the 'plan', but I'm flexible that way.

Judson Cycle in Lake Crystal (west of Mankato, MN) has been a go-to dealer for a long time.  Decades?  Search them here.  http://www.motoguzzi-us.com/find-dealer.html

Mill City Motorcycles (aka Scooterville) in Minneapolis is a great shop, where I bought my V7II Stone last year.  I'm not sure how familiar they are with older Guzzis, they've only been selling Guzzis for a few years but they are dedicated to their task.  These would be the two MN dealers I'd contact.

Ran a diagonal through Mankato about noon yesterday and arrived st Paul about dinnertime.  Some MN state roads are in quite good order.  ITsec -- GPS brought me to my daughter's door reliably (started it up on the outskirts).

So I have a weekend in the metro area with no reason to use the trike.  After 3 weeks on the road a down day with no issues is a novelty.  I'm going to make soup and read books to my grandson and contemplate what to do next.

On the tech side, I richened my idle trim and got a little improvement in the low rpm shakes.  Still feels uneven and struggling a bit under 3krpm.   This was simply not present before the bad fuel incident.  I'm getting disgusted with it.  What to do?

 Hi, David
If it's truly related to the bad fuel incident the low speed roughness would seem to be injector related...as in dirty. Perhaps something got through the filter and fouled the spray pattern on one of them?

You might try running with a tankful of Techron injector cleaner. That stuff cleans out everything in the combustion chamber as well. My bike usually seems to run a bit smoother, and I get better mpg with it as well.

New ngk bp6es @0.024.  An aside -- the 'pe-gap' was 0.035 on one 0.038 on the other.  So when I bust chops if someone claims 'pre gapped -- needs no checking', there's a reason.

I also trimmed back the wires and re-screwed in the ngk ends.  I have not however replaced the caps.

I ran this thing for 750 miles around Sitka in the rpm butter smooth.  I just makes me cry to have a load of gas foul so much so fast.

Yes, it could be an injector.  I'd expect a weak one to be worse at low rpm.  But up above 45mph it's its old sweet self -- performs like it did as a 2-wheeler, not minding the doubled weight one whit.  I've got spaes -- at home.

Any thoughts about cam position sensor or tps causing this?  I see both as more of an intermittent thing than this solid performance problem, and I've never heard of either acting like this though.

Yes, I'm still looking for a place to park it for a few weeks.  Indoor accommodations not necessary -- it's happy under a tarp.

I'm hoping to catch you before I leave.  I've got an Alaska present for you.

Did the new plugs help? When you stop by we should give it a compression test ,it's had a hard time when it had its episode . Is it a hydro?

No, the new plugs had no effect.  Perhaps new caps will help.

I'm going to try to get out your way this week, John.

You can also check TPS with guzzidiag. Slowly rotate the throttle, and make sure the readings correspond. If the readings jump around all willy nilly, you have issues.
