Political Meals: Favorite Italian Meal
« on: January 27, 2017, 09:33:37 PM »
As a lot you sit and stare at your bike while us in the lower states are riding year round you must be getting hungry. So I ask what is your favorite Italian meal! Also do you cook or eat out. I usually make my own which is always better than the restaurant. Italian food is simple so don't complicate it. One of my favorites is Fettuccine Carbonara which I learned to perfect in a Rome kitchen. $15 a plate, kitchen is open.

Alfredo and a sirloin or strip is a great combo.

There was a super Italian restaurant in Houston, on Telephone Rd. It was called Murphy's (lol) and it is honestly the best I've had. This would be early 70s.

My grandmother came to the USA from Italy in 1928. She had two sisters. They would make homemade ravioli for all the family/holiday meals. They would spend days before making the filling, rolling and cutting the ravioli and making the meat sauce. I would sometimes grate the fresh parmesan from wedges sent by the cousins in Parma Italy. The adults would eat roast beef as the main meal but I would always skip the roast and just load up on ravioli.  :food:

my true favorites are veal piccata and chicken marsala...  if I make them.  I have never been in a restaurant that offers a decent version. Unfortunately, i get to make the pretty rarely.

Most common and pleasing one I do are nice meatballs simmered in a quick marinara sauce & served over ziti. great pot to simmer while watching football.

spaghetti carbonara.

Bev can cook it.  Spaghetti with bacon, parmesan cheese, seasoning and beaten egg that cooks in the hot pasta.  The egg makes a sauce.  Very good.  Hard to get the egg right so it doesn't scramble.  Make sure the pasta is fine, spaghetti or smaller.

Give me a Cesar Salad and a glass of Shiraz ....  man I am there.     :food:

Also like Veal Saltimbocca and Bev can fix that too.   :thumb:

Anything with protein, carbohydrates, and dairy. A few vegetables are okay...

Pizza
Lasagna
Spaghetti
Fettuccini Alfredo
More pizza
The occasional bite of salad...

Or just bread, cheese, and wine! (Or is that French food?)

After growing up in Chicago, eating Italian in my neighborhood and then 10 days in Italy on my honeymoon including 3 days at Al Verde in Mandello del Lario there is no such thing as my favorite Italian meal. There is just too much of a good thing to pick one meal out of such a plethora of rich  cuisine offered by Italians.

Here in South West Va. we have a monthly Guzzi lunch usually at an Italian restaurant. W/a quick glance at my list I count at least 20 w/in 120 miles of Lynchburg we have been to. My dish-of-choice for rating them is linguini w/red clam sauce. 2nd favorite is a veggi calzone w/fresh mushrooms, black olives, broccoli, onion, etc. etc. & garlic....lots of garlic!

Would that be the same Telephone Road from the Steve Earle song?

Pizza! When the crusts are perfectly light, and the texture is midway between chewy and crisp like a cracker. So thin, you could practically read a magazine through it. The dressings done with a very light hand, almost delicate. My favorite is with prosciutto. Served whole, no slices, the size of a dinner plate, and so light you can make it your whole meal.

There is this little Italian Restaurant in Floyd VA ,  Mickey G’s http://www.mickeygsbistro.com where they make the best Bucatini alla Puttanesca.
If you are ever in the vicinity you've got to try it  (The VA rally is held nearby)

I love Bucatini, but during my college years many years ago, a few tabs of LSD induced a rather unpleasant experience with that pasta. It took on the look of a bowl of snakes, needless to say, it has left a lasting impression.

Fegato!
Spaghetti vongole
At times I succeed in making a decent risotto, e.g. with mushrooms, asparagus or shellfish
Pecorino wine with a good pecorino cheese and bread
Simply ruccola with parmesan shaves, olive oil and balsamico

And of course, a rough grappa!

That's one of the ones on Ronkom's list above, so that makes three votes for that one!

you need a family run trattoria somewhere in a forgotten corner of any major italian city and some meat that is cooked sloooooooooooowly. Ossa bucca can be a spiritual experience.

And this is coming from someone who is 100 per cent vegan!
