2014 with 41,000 miles. Lucky she can drive a stick, automatics were out of her price range.

Are automatics the norm in the US?

Here in the UK, manual stick shifts are much more common. I drive an auto, because I inherited it, but I wouldn't choose one. I'd always prefer a manual shift.

If autos are the norm in the U.S. I wonder why that is? Bigger, longer roads, perhaps?

IMHO...  Cars and bikes are viewed a bit opposite (in very broad view with lots of exceptions of course) in the US verses much of the rest of the world. Here in the US bikes are viewed as toys and cars are utilitarian, In many parts of the world, it is more the opposite. I wish this wasn't the case so much for bikes in the US.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

yes.  I think the Accord is the only family sedan available with a stick (4 cyl only) here.  All my cars are sticks expect my Duramax and it's getting more difficult to find them.

Now, the exception here are Sports Cars; sticks in Corvettes, Camaros & Mustangs are more popular than ever.   But Jags, Porsches, Beemers, Alfas and Mercs are all moving to autos and paddles, many of these cars aren't available with sticks in the US at all.

My wife has more than 70K on her Fiat 500. Finally put a set of pads on it. A manual shift, although she's mostly in the wrong gear. A fun car. The dog can force himself into the back seat. I wouldn't ask any grown up to do that.  R3~
BTW: I bought my 1st car w/automatic trans. a few months back. I've been driving 67 years. Damn!

Just changing the subject a bit but I really cannot understand the long term obsession some people have with large cars. Sure if you have a family or have to cart a lot of crap about you'll need something bigger but once you're outside that demographic big vehicles are a PITA!

Apart from my enormous work van, which itself is only a 2.8 litre petrol engine with a five speed stick behind it, our other two cars are a Suzuki Jimny, 1300cc of throbbing, go anywhere, gristle with a five speed stick and a Mazda CX3 with a 1.5L turbo diesel with a six speed Auto behind it. They perform their allotted tasks very well and the Maz in particular is absurdly frugal! Jude commutes about fifty to sixty miles a day and we stick fuel in it once a week with weekend useage as well. Empty to full costs us about $50 at Oz fuel prices! The Jimny isn't quite so good as it needs working pretty hard to make rapid progress but it's still stupid cheap compared to yer average six cylinder 'Family Sedan' never mind an 8 cylinder truck! While I wouldn't condemn anyone to the back of the Jimny for a long trip my youngest stick-insect son can fold himself into the back without too much effort and the Maz will carry four, errr? Less than slender? Adults in comparative comfort all day.

Small cars rule!

Pete

Nice.  I drove my little Fiat from Newark airport to Vicksburg, MS & back last week.  2,400 mile round trip.  No probems at all.

When I was looking for one, I found that manual transmission Fiat 500s outnumber automatics about 3 to 1 here in the US - at least for the 2012 model year. That's about the polar opposite of most other small cars where automatics outsell manuals. Don't know what that says about Fiat buyers. <shrug>

BTW: I won't be buying a 500. Went "bottom feeder" again and bought a '90 VW Jetta diesel. 2 door, manual, normally aspirated. Rust-free and straight. Cost me a whopping $500.  :azn:

yes.  I think the Accord is the only family sedan available with a stick (4 cyl only) here.

Family sedans currently available with a stick (there are likely more, these are just some that I know of):
Honda Civic (actually big enough these days to be a family sedan)
Mazda 6 (about the same size as the Accord)
Mazda 3
Nissan Sentra
BMW 3-Series Sedan (multiple engine choices)
VW Jetta

But, like the Accord, many of the cars that offer a manual do it only with a base engine, or, more often, with the base trim level w/o even the option to add desirable options such as navigation or optional LED or xenon lighting

I now have a large car for comfort. Before we moved, I had a small car. (I almost got a Fiat 500.) It was great fun to drive for short distances. However, it was noisy, stiff, and uncomfortable on long trips.

My commute to my office is now 150 miles each way. When I go to my office (usually just once a week), I want speed, comfort, peace, and quiet. Fuel economy is secondary (mid-20s on the freeway, when traffic is actually moving).

I really cannot understand the long term obsession some people have with large cars.

Maybe an Americanism, but I prefer V8 power.  Smooth, quiet, and oh the torque!

Of all the vehicles I've owned, I've liked the Chevrolet Suburban the best.  Plenty of power.  Plenty of room for people and luggage.  Good towing ability.

Though I really enjoyed the 1991 Mazda Miata I owned for seven years, I was never happy with its lack of power.  Most 4-cylinder econoboxes I've driven just don't have enough room, and the Noise/Vibration/Harshness isn't fun for extended driving.

Back in the winter, I borrowed my brother's Ford Fusion for a month.  I had thought about buying it from him for commuting, but after a month with it, decided I'd pass...

Something to be said about having a luxury car for commuting.  Same for having a large bike.
