Dellorto carb question
« on: June 14, 2017, 06:18:43 AM »
Hi folks, I am in process of rebuilding flat side carburetors on 74 Eldorado and can't get throttle return spring back onto slide. Any tips on how to do this without having to bend spring. Found no tricks at This Old Tractor.
Thanks

Pick up the carb top and orient it as if you were going to put it on.
Take the spring and place it against the carb top facing down.
Compress the spring completely against the carb top and hold it compressed with one hand.
Feed the throttle cable though the top of the carb and through the center of the compressed spring.
Orient the slide correctly to the carb body and hook the tip of the throttle cable to the hole in the slide.
Let the spring slowly down onto the slide to keep the cable in place.
The more slack you have in the cable the better so you might want to adjust accordingly.

On one side the spring slid right in and locked the cable on my 29's, the other side required a smidge of modification to the spring. That was when I replaced the "lighter" springs back to the OEM's. I found the lite springs sometimes would not return the slides to idle.

I'm not familiar with Dellortos, but on most slide/needle carbs, the slide will only fully seat if properly oriented. Old Mikunis would allow you to slip the slide in backwards, but it did not fully drop into position. This made it tough to fit the return spring in the limited space above the slide. It's a long shot, but it may be the same for the Dellortos...

The spring end with the wire going across the diameter goes at the top

I understand how and where the spring is to be installed, I just can't seen to get straight wire into the slot/hole without possibly bending spring. It came out and will go back in no doubt. What I am looking for is the tip, trick, or proper swear words to slide it in.
I'm back to garage now to try again.

Push the strait part down w/your finger far enough to get in the hole and push on.

Problem solved. The Dumbo working on carburetor was trying to install spring on slide it goes onto top not slide. I did find the appropriate swear words after looking at pictures again.
