Bought a Stelvio!!
« on: August 22, 2020, 06:56:39 PM »
So I already own a Griso, v7 iii Racer, and Quota.

Brief history:
The way the Quota came to be ... was looking at Stelvio's, but they just seemed too big ... then the V85TT came out, was VERY tempted by that bike, but no deals to be had and then I ran across a used Quota where the total price would be less than the fees on the V85TT, so I bought the Quota.

But I kept thinking about a Stelvio.  Looking at craigslist or eBay or other places.

And then a crazy chain of events occurred.   eBay sent me an email, something like "This Stelvio auction is ending soon ..." ... hummm, I go take a look.  2013 Stelvio.  Quick check, that is rollerized.  44,000 miles, hum, kind of high but the wildguzzi guys say these things run forever so I'll go with that

Not too terribly far away from me.  Auction has 0 bids and was a no reserve auction, set to end in 1 hour.  Hum, certainly someone will bid on this.  Kept an eye on it.  10 minutes to go, 0 bids.  Hum, maybe someone is waiting until the last minute.

Seemed like too nice a motorcycle to just let the auction expire unsold.  So in the last few seconds I put in a bid at his opening price, auction ended, I was the winner!!  Woo Hoo!!!

Going to pick it up tomorrow.  It is the orange color.

So now my odd collection ... will the Stelvio replace the Quota?  Do you really need a Griso and a Stelvio?   Will the 44,000 mile Stelvio be a great running reliable bike?  Should I not have looked at that email?

Will update with pics when I get the bike.

Do you really need   ..... ?

You keep using that word.   I do not think it means what you think it means ... !!

When it comes to motorcycles, whatever comes after the ellipsis, the answer is "Of course you do".

Will the 44,000 mile Stelvio be a great running reliable bike?

Mine's got 55,000 on it, and it's a great running reliable bike.   It's in its prime - all the adjustments have been done, valve clearances don't change, oil, trans, and CARC fluid look like new whenever I drain them, and it's all-day comfortable.   I was out on it today and thinking what a good handling, handy bike it is.

I think you'll be happy with it!

I was watching that one, thought it would be a no sale. Lot of bike for what you paid for it.

Well done! 44,000 miles isn’t bad at all. Especially if it’s been kept maintained. :thumb:

Love that color on them..  As far as if you "need" it..  well its better to ask if it is smart to "want" it... and I say ya..  Like any Guzzi im sure you will have some sorting to do on it. But I think it will be a fine addition

Went over it well this morning and it is in great shape!

The shifter (gear lever) is very wobbly.  I checked a parts diagram and no bearing there, just shifter and special bolt.  Bike shifts great, just super wobbly lever.

The hand guards touch the windshield near full lock (on both sides). Looked at rotating the hand guards but that is connected to the clutch/brake lever position and I don't want to mess that up.  Looks like I could trim the windshield or trim the hand guards or live with it.  Will think about that a bit.

It has a Mistral exhaust.  Bike runs great, fueling seems great (for riding), but has some pop & crackle on decel.  Not sure if the DB killer is in or not.  Will check my two boxes of extra stuff to see if it is in there.  Might go with a different fuel map, but kind of low priority.

The rims are perfect! No scratches, or dings, perfectly true.  All 3 cases are perfect, no scratches or dings, and they go on/off perfectly and easily.

So, thank you eBay!!

Orange is fastest - just like mine.  You will have some popping with Mistral, but I like it.

Any questions on it just ask.

IIRC isn't there a flat metal bushing about 1/16th thick and an inch or so wide at the shifter junction?

Here is the diagram:

So #8 just looks like a washer in this.

I'm assuming/guessing the shifter is worn inside after 44,000 miles ... since it is aluminum I figure it would wear away more than the bolt.

I checked my 3,000 mile Griso shifter (same part number) and it has a wee bit of wobble.

So if this bugs me enough I can pull the Stelvio and Griso shifters apart and see what's up.

But, surprisingly, the Stelvio shifts perfectly, wobbly shifter and all.

That's a funny looking mechanism; from what you're saying, I have the same shift lever on my Griso, tbh, I've never taken a hard look at it.

In that diagram, it looks like those 2 O rings #7 could be meant to tighten up the whole shift lever pin assembly,, if so, they might be old/worn out/missing and be your issue. idk

Ah, good catch!  I need to update that thread.  That trip got canceled ... was a wedding/family reunion type of thing and covid19 concerns have turned it into a ~10 person small wedding thing now ... so no trip ... we might do a May or June 2021 family reunion thing and if so, that trip will be on again.

Would love to get a CA->Utah->Colorado trip in this year.  Seems like to get the Stelvio ready I just need fill up the gas tank.

Waiting for a Quota Stelvio comparo.

I might do a new thread on that.  After 3 rides on the Stelvio I took the Quota out today.  I have to say, there is something about the Quota that just clicks for me.  I have been tweaking it for about a year, so it should be doing what I want it to do by now.    For just "fun" riding, I actually like the Quota better.  The Stelvio seems all serious and ready to go to Moab and Colorado and the Quota seems like a happy puppy, just happy to be where ever it is and where ever it is going.     So for now, the logical test ride and evaluation sheet review would show the Stelvio wins (better front brakes, firmer more controlled suspension, faster 0-60 times, etc) ... but I rode the Stelvio for about 1.5 hours, then took the Quota out, and the simple question of which was more fun?  The Quota!

So it looks like a 4 Guzzi household for now.
