Ditto on the wurth grease for the geese! Best stuff out there. Spensive but will last a lifetime. Don’t hesitate. Get it. It “sticks” stays on splines. A must have for the pesky bmw splines

If you have a boating supply nearby, try Sierra Spline Lube. If it is happy in salt water then it should be happy on a Guzzi. Certainly better than what Luigi applied.

Upon disassembly, I noticed a fair amount of red grease on this one. It was nice to see that the previous owner had kept up with maintenance.

I was told the Honda spline grease was the way to go but I only have about 2 more applications in the tube.

On a related subject rear gearbox.
When I did the first service on my V7III it was obvious the factory added Molly, I asked the dealer and they don't add it when they do first service, any thoughts on that?
What brand, and how much?
I don't think there's Molybdenum in Mollylube brand.

I use a 50/50 mixture of Honda moly and good wheel bearing grease. Although it’s hard to find the moly these days.

Two cautions regarding 'molly' grease. I've found it settled out in a ~30 yr. old case of molybdenum.
More serious is a tendency to collect in very small pockets due to reduced oil flow. I first found it in roller type wheel bearings on large diameter spindles and later in roller bearings from transmissions.
Basically it builds up over time. More is not always better. R3~

IIRC, I used BelRay marine grease that I bought at a Yamaha dealer. I think it is recommended for outboard motor use.
I know it is thick as hell, and I think it even came with a brush.

I used Motorex Copper Compound in the 100g jar. Dear as poison and it came with a brush too :grin:

Spline lube threads are only bested by oil threads. I bet we get at least 3 pages of discussion as to what is best. :popcorn:

30 years ago I was using Honda's Moly60 stuff because that is what they recommended on their Wings. Well, I finally ran out of the Moly 60 about a decade ago on my LMIVSE. Since the Honda stuff is no longer available I began using the Wurth 3000 grease and I'm satisfied with it's performance. I haven't seen signs of metal to metal contact, rust, etc. and it didn't separate & weep out. My tube of Wurth will probably last me the rest of my life.
It is great when vehicle manufacturers cite a sae, jaso, nlgi, etc. spec versus a brand name product...imo.

No spline grease in any Guzzi manual, this is not a Honda or BMW. No, No, No
AND all my Guzzi's are still going fine & no wear, since 1976. IT'S ALL BS
Maybe you should oil all your combine & hay baler chains, collects dirt & wears them out.

Some of the manufacturers use a moly assembly lube.

I still have a tube of that Moly 60 grease and use it on the Honda rear wheel hub (as directed in the Honda manual)

I used Evinrude blue marine spline grease on my Guzzi stuff for many years. Two years after applying it, it was still there doing it's job when I tore back into it!

I had done a post about spline grease quite a while ago; due to what a pita it was to find Wurth 3000 and ship to Canad/exchange rate etc, I ended up with something like molykote sp? but I filed the info away.
Last year I got stung on parts for a hydraulic loader valve repair job on my tractor. The dealer was a long distance away up the Ottawa Valley, but just as a matter of principle I took a ride up to return the inferior part and get my refund.
While I'm in this dingy old fashioned tractor place, patiently waiting to be served, I spied a few tubes of Wurth 3000 up on the shelf with the price under $10 (Canadian) marked on with black marker. I almost grabbed them all it was such a bargain, but I knew 1 tube would last my lifetime, definitely made my day.
Something to keep in mind if you happen to live in farming tractor dealership territory, they like good spline grease as well. and it could be a bargain.

We grew up with that five-gallon bucket of "grease" in the machine shed. We used that stuff for everything that needed "grease". Get a stick and slather it into the grease gun tubes, or onto whatever needed greased.

I still have 2 sleeves of this left but I'm sure there is another substitute that will work just fine. I started using it years ago when I was riding BMW air-heads.

I’ve reduced spline wear by cleaning the splines, degreasing and spraying dry film moly, cure with heat gun, assemble with Wurth.

Honda Moly60 here too, probably got enough left to see me to the next world.
