Steering damper

I am working on the front end of my 1979 1000SP and I was looking at the steering damper.  Is this piece able to be rebuilt or is it a replace situation??  Any help appreciated.

Isn't it wet enough in ANX to get your steering damper?

Seriously though -- it's old.  If you think you need one and yours isn't working, replace it.

Damper...dampener.. . dampenerrrr ... steering stabilizer!!!! that's it!!! I never really liked the name game.  I think it is worn out, but I have a lack of funding... I'll probably just let it ride for a while.

IMO, not really needed. If it's the damper I'm thinking of, it's not hydraulic, just a friction type. I've disassembled them and replaced the packing.

I asked the same about my '78 G5 awhile back and most replies were that I probably would not need it.

It damps oscillations, and therefore is stabilizes the steering parts.  "Dampener" is like "inflammable": unnecessary syllables, but not wrong.

My Mille didn't come with one, and the steering has been stable up to the bike's top speed, but I'm still considering adding one.  With any motorcycle, when something goes wrong, like you hit an oily spot in the road while leaned over, a tank slapper can get started, and a damper can keep things stable.
