Title: T3 Repaint
Post by: Scout63 on December 07, 2022, 07:33:34 AM
I’m going to have another tank and set of side covers painted for my ‘79 G5/T3FB mashup before I sell it.  The current tank has a dent and some sentimental value so I want to keep it. I’m also going to pull the Motogadget gauges and bracket and install factory T3 gauges and housing. I have all the parts and can keep the uber expensive Motogadget gauges for another build. I don’t think they add anything visually to this bike.

What is the most saleable color?  I think black again, but a cream white might really be appealing.  I don’t think I want to get involved with striping the tank so most likely just a solid color. Here it is presently with the dent visible on the right side.

A Google search reports that Black is the most popular motorcycle color.

My opinion is if you do black it needs the stripes. Solid white would be good too

The saying goes, “There are just three colors for motorcycles, red, black, and black. “ I thought black without any stripes looked good on my T3, and I am now beginning to miss it.

A solid colour paint scheme without striping is like pie without ice-cream...  DonG

Even a home applied stripe job would look good. Couldn’t be too hard. Not like the length of a car

A bit of white doesn't hurt.

Well if that's the way it is:

Two other options-

Leave the new tank in quality primer without going to the expense of final paint.  That allows a buyer to save a buck and choose their final color, even if it is the primer that’s the recent cool fad.

If not, go black or red and consider adding some tape pinstripes for bling.  Again, it’s less expensive and more flexible than real pin striping.  Then the buyer can either later afford good $$ pinstriping or just pull the tape to have a solid color tank.

I used a water transfer set of pin striping on my G5 when I repainted it. Quite inexpensive, and it gives the correct spacing of the wide and narrow stripes. Clear coat afterwards. I think I got them from Steine Dinse, although the American suppliers may carry them as well.

Thanks for noticing Steve. The Rapide tank is an old repaint too but still pretty good. One of my friends was fussing with the handlebars and put a ding in it last week.  I tried to be gracious and not cry.

I worked out a deal to trade a Motogadget gauge for some striping. Another client bead blasted the tank overnight and it’s already in primer.

Survey says black so black it is.

Thanks everyone.  You are all family.
