5 speed Gear Quadrant

My 5 speeder Gear selector drum quadrant is looking a bit sorry for itself.  Not unusual they always tend to look a little chewed and not effect the change in any way. Are the teeth not hardened?

Are the teeth not hardened?

Easy to tell. Take your flat mill file to it.
 Does it cut easily? No
 Does it cut with difficulty? yes, probably spring hardness, around Rockwell C45.
 Does it slide? Yes. It's hard.

Last year while in the states I overhauled my Bridgeport w/ new acme bronze nuts in both the horizontal planes (vertical no slop) and upgraded the electronics w/ Taiwan specials(guzzi content.)

Took all day!!! (and the daily working party to lift the table.)

I had to as when the CNC guy is not around and something is needed, (programing that damn thing is ??!!), post haste the old Bridgeport comes into play!!

Yeah, I have a Bridgeport.. but.. recently did the full Monty upgrade to the CNC and 3D software. It's a pretty big hill to climb for this old dawg.. but I'm managing to get it done.  Gimme the CNC every time.

Impressive!

I like to do simple things on the mill to keep my hand in the math.

I just supply the CNC programmer guy with the solid models (Solid Works) from the CAD program and let him make the chips fly!

A nice 6 axis Fadal maybe in the future....

  That might be a little above and beyond for a home shop..

Will be located in a building at the AP away from we amateurs' but, not far from the Bridgeport though.

Its a big sucker and requires a bit more power.
