Disassembling flanged spoked wheels
« on: April 18, 2019, 09:26:05 PM »
I have an alloy flanged spoked wheel from a Bassa or EV that I want to clean up--it has a lot brake dust or some other hard to remove stuff on it. I've tried some aluminum wheel cleaner, and that worked a little, but not as well as I'd like. I think I could clean it up nicely if I took the rim off, but the problem with disassembly is that you can't get a wrench on some of the nipples.

Has anyone taken one of these apart? Do you just use a screwdriver to get those nipples off?

I am not familiar with this particular wheel but if its like any of the earlier Boranni rims then once the tire, tube and rim lace are peeled off the spoke nipples will turn off with a screwdriver.

If the nipple gets stuck I use a small vice grip to hole the spoke while turning the nipple off, sometimes a liberal dose of penetrating fluid is needed around the nipple.

a small wrench should be able to reach every spoke and turn it 1/4 rotation.

Do yourself a favor and get a can of PB Blaster or other penetrating oil and apply a few times over a day or so to the spoke nipples to get things lubed up before trying to disassemble.

Thanks for the advice. Here's a pic that shows the problem with the nipples. These are such nice wheels that I think it's worth restoring them.

Unless you are competent with lacing wheels,  I wouldn't disassemble them.  Those wheels are evidently assembled by a machine and are troublesome,  although it can be done by hand.  The guy I use for wheels says that the regular wheels he does but tubeless spoked wheels go to Buchanons wheel.  By the looks of it,  you have a large project there.  Some of the spokes may have to be destroyed just to get them out.

Good advice--I'll try cleaning it up w/o disassembly.

If you gave it to a competent shop they would likely cut them in half and replace w/new. It's a time spent thing @ an hourly rate $$$.  R3~

Those are some short nipples right there! They make them in longer lengths and it may be worthwhile to change them out if you need to adjust the tension properly.
Buchanans website has all the dimensions and lengths to choose from.

       Hope this helps

My plan of the moment is to remove a few spokes, clean up the area around them, re-install those, then move on to the next set.

I think it'd be $400-500 for Buchanan's to re-do the wheel. I'm retired, so labor is cheap. The worst I can do is to damage some spokes/nipples and have to replace them or send it off.

Yikes!, The nipples are in the hub on those wheels???? You are a better man than me if you are able to tackle that disassembly and reassembly and get them trued up again. A toothbrush and mothers polish and some elbow grease while they are all together looks a whole lot easier.

If the wheels spin true with no damage, I'd leave them. I've built a lot of wheels, and worst, by far, were the BMW tubeless spoke wheels similar to the EV. I think I spent 50 hours on a GSPD tubeless wire front wheel. And it still wasn't perfect. It had about 1/2 the wobble, in the end, I'd started out with and considered myself fortunate it came out that good!

Aren't those spoke nipples socket-head on the other side?

Sounds like excellent advice to me to clean them up as-is. Even removing one spoke at a time isn't a good idea.

Those aren't socket-heads.

I won't try disassembling the wheel. In fact, it may go to a dusty part of the garage for a rainy day (and it doesn't rain much in New Mexico)

???
I’ll admit that as a young bloke I didn’t get out much.
But the end that’s in the hub don’t look like any nipples I’d seen.. (although I admit it was in the dark most of the time..)

That's not a flanged tubeless rim--looks like a Borrani from the 70s. There's a pic of the nipples barely protruding from the tubeless wheel hub (and one completely hidden) is a previous post.

Seems imgbb places a link into some of the pictures that we upload.  If you look at the line of code for the photo in your reply, you'll often see the link with some unrelated text in it.  You can go through and delete it if you wish.  I like to for some reason.
