Going backwards in time - 03 Cali
rocker59:
Geez guys. At lunch Sunday there were three owners of hydro Californias. All of them fixed and reliable with many miles on the clocks...
Mine is a 2004 EVT with about 20,000 miles on it. I've owned it for two years and it's rock solid.
SemperVee, have the owner pull a valve cover and take some pictures. Easy to know if the work has been done. Feel free to post pix here.
If you want good info on the Hydro Californias, talk to people who own them.
Wayne Orwig:
I have over 130,000 miles on my 2004.
Still like it, but I am fond of the lighter V85TT, so it doesn't get too many miles on it now.
Other than needing the tires aired up I am sure it would take me across the country today.

What the last couple posters said--Mine's an 04 hydro, frame number after alll the fixes (dual plate clutch, hydro lifters triple tree (maybe). were done at the factory. The major concern is it "ran when parked" some time ago, says 7-8 years but who knows. Seems nicely cleaned up, but I'd need to start it or at least hear it crank if its super cheap. 25K miles, I'd think the single plate clutch woulda blown up by then.
SemperVee:
Thanks for all the imput on the Cali from the owners of such. I have admired from afar for years but always leery of wire wheels, but this with tubeless and floorboards is intriguing to me and a new project. Will see. Awaiting info from owner as to the valve recall etc..

If it is running and you can test ride, there is no down side for a distance motorcycle. Very comfortable, and the fairing and foot shield do a good job. On mine I did get a taller windshield (clearshield.com), the original was not good with an open faced helmet.
I like my V7 a lot more than the cali for local riding, but would use the cali for a tour.
Check the gas lines and air intakes for aging.
Don
Edit: If it doesn't have the kit for an outside oil filter you should drop the pan and change it soon.
