Helmet Preference survey 1/2 3/4 or full
« on: August 13, 2019, 07:08:22 PM »
Hey guys, I just ordered a 3/4 light weight fiberglass helmet. I’ve only worn 1/2 helmets since my motor years, so 40 years. I thought I’d try a 3/4 for cold weather riding. Just curious as to what you guys prefer to protect your noggins.

Since my Victory has a fairing and a windshield I wear a half helmet (Bell Pit Boss) over 90% of the time. If I'm not wearing the half helmet I'm wearing a Shark Evoline full - 3/4 helmet. The convertible/modular Shark may get replaced at the end of the year. If it does, I may be looking for a good 3/4 helmet that fits my round/oval head shape. Both the Bell and the Shark have a drop down sun shield so any new helmet will have to offer that option as well.

I've worn a 3/4 helmet for most of 45 years riding, I also have a half helmet I wear when temps are over 90. I recently purchased a Fly Tourist helmet, chin piece removable, but still able to eat, drink, spit with the chin piece in place. It's flo green and gets pretty good attention from drivers. :bike-037:

Started regular sweet riding in 1979. Always wore a 3/4 helmet. I was introduced to a Nolan back in the late 80s I think. Tried it on in the showroom and it seemed to confining. A few months later I decided to try it and quickly got use to it. My last generation Nolan and my current Schuhberth have come a long way from then. Wouldn't ride without them.

I wear full or modular.  Once in a great while I will put on the 1/2 helmet for a short slower speed ride.

I prefer to ride in the clean air instead of behind a windshield and since I have had a few things cut off my skin I try and stay completely covered these days.

The full for safety reasons or because you ride without a shield or fairing?

I've worn only full face Arai since 1990. Don't recall what it was before that, but pretty sure they were full face as well. I ride year-round and want the weather protection since none of my bikes have more than small sport fairings. But even in summer the full face helps insulate from the hot furnace blast. Only in stop and go traffic do I heat up. When I hit an elk fifteen years ago and went over a twenty-foot embankment, landing on a boulder, the visor was pretty scraped up. Glad I had the full face.

NC - in 1981, I was an assistant manager in a drug store making $200 per week.  I bought my first bike, a Kawasaki 250CSR (pretend cruiser).  I bought a Nava Helmet (remember those, I think they morphed into Nolan) for myself and my wife for a week's pay ($100 each).  I had done some reading but it simply seemed to make sense to me that if you came off, you had a better chance in a full face.  The Nava did have a large face area with much better vision than the Bells and other full faces of the time.  I have also found them to be quiet using ear plugs and of course there are advantages in rain and cold.  All of the above applies to me only, no judgments just my opinion.

I used to always wear a full-face helmet and still try to make myself do it for longer trips. But in the last two or three years I've fallen in love with a 3/4 helmet. No windscreen, either. I don't much mind the bugs on my face anymore. I really like the feel of the wind and sun.

I'm not arguing for my practice.

I have a modular for touring, a 3/4 for the heat of summer, and full-faced for the rest of the time. I really like having some flexibility...

Full Face for me 95% of the time. I can't stand the wind in my eyes, even with my big chunky glasses. Sensitive eyes- same reason I cant wear contacts or deal with the 'air jet blast in the eye' during optical exams.

I do have an open face~3/4 helmet I wear occasionally, but for around town or short local runs... Only wear that if I'm sure to keep it at about 55mph or below!

3/4 for day rides, full for long trips when rain and extreme cold is a potential factor.  Both Nolans.  Even the full is convertible into a 3/4 in short order.

I love the wind in my face, and HAVE to flip up the visor at every opportunity when wearing the full.
