Well , anyone can play along , but for reasons known to Jonathon and me this might have special significance .

What famous athlete carried the native name of Wa Ho Thuk , meaning "Bright Path" ?  As always , no peeking . There will be a special cookie awarded for this one .

I believe the Berg Brothers came from Hong Kong, and finding Harris and Pitts standing next to each other at the start of a football game  in their ceremonial Haiku armor, the local wags came up with the term Steel Wall (later shortened to Steelers).

Meanwhile , back in Oklahoma  Thorpe is an interesting study , born and raised just West of Muskogee , he traveled the world as an athlete and an ambassador . He was voted America's greatest athlete from the 20th century in some polls, beating out MJ , The Golden Bear , Ali , and other luminaries . Seems strange that Babe Ruth is a household name , but Thorpe is largely forgotten . Heck , he was even the president of the pro football league that morphed into the NFL , and was the star player in that league for years , playing until he was 41 . Guess maybe he needed a candy bar named after him

Sorry, got to the thread late. I don't know much about Thorpe other than he was one of those pure natural talents. I can't imagine that he had professional grade training, coaching, or even diet. I'm sure it was the same with many other athletes of the era. However, the story of this one man rising up from the dust bowl must have been powerfully inspiring not simply to his people or even to Americans in general. Society really does benefit from heroes like this.  To think that modern sports figures are out there hawking donuts and pontificating.

That was the former name of Jim Thorpe PA .

Jonathon , there is a brilliant Doc about Thorpe , yes he was and is an inspiration to us all .
Oh , the dust bowl came after he had retired from athletics and was more or less barnstorming the country performing one man shows .

"Thanks, King".

That would be in reference to King Gustav of Sweden who called Thorpe the greatest athlete in the world . Thorpe said later to his bride something about her marrying royalty because Gustav had conferred the honor on him . He so dominated the 1912 Olympics , winning both the pentathlon and decathlon , even setting overall world records in some events .

this would be a good spot to post a photograph of Yale, Oklahoma.  Hometown of Jim Thorpe and Chet Baker (other than this, I can't think what else those two would have in common).
