New to me CX100
« on: April 28, 2022, 12:24:08 PM »
I'm not always technically fluent enough to post a link with ancient equipment but saw a CX100 on FBMP last night in Decatur GA for $2800.  Ad said it needs TLC.

If this doesn't work, maybe someone else can link, connect, maybe GuzziSteve knows the bike, ??

I messaged him.  He replied with details that weren't much more than what's in the FB ad, but did say it has a cam, gear set, bub exhaust,  fairly nice original paint.   Engine is not stuck.    He said he has owned it for about 25 yrs & has clear title in his name.   Price is firm right now.

Thanks.   I'm pretty stoked.  It's going to replace my very nice but nothing special HD Evo FLHTC Bagger that I like but don't need.

Not clear on the paint being original now, at least in comparison to a white one that TOMB had & posted a few yrs ago  which he regretted selling.  Seller say he has the lower fairing.

My V7 Sport will never be restored.  My Corsa Record will obviously never be original. No plans to restore this bike either.  It should be a great addition to the group.  I sold some very special bikes at the beginning of my studio that I can't justify$$ replacing.  They were special because they were cheap as well as cool to me.

I had no idea these were such a low production bike.   I just knew how some here hold them in greater-than high esteem as a real world bike to enjoy.  I have no need for ultra performance.  Nothing to prove, just want to enjoy what I can while I can.

I had no idea these were such a low production bike.

Congrats, very well bought :thumb:     It's got a lot of nice rare pieces added to it, that seat might be one of the older ones made with higher quality foam, those Bubs are unobtanium.

From everything I've read only a total of 353 made and I believe all were shipped to the US market. I can't tell from the from the photos, but it looks like it might have the later round body carbs? If so, some of them came with Nikasil sp? cylinders.

Re someone's question about the bars, they came with 35 mm clip ons, but the top triple clamp is cast and threaded so adding more upright bars is easily doable.

What I find endearing about that model is that it's like Italian exotica but without the headaches, small valves, lower compression, easy to live with, jmho.

Safe travels picking it up, hope the deal and the trip home goes smoothly.

The first ones built in 79 were iron bores, the next year they made a very small final batch (75 or so)with nicasil.

Well, it's on the trailer here at home.  Nothing like a trip into Atlanta on the interstate/parking lot @5PM on a Friday to understand how fortunate I am to never have to commute in traffic to get to work or home.

No worries about original paint.  I am glad to share a generous peel of red or white with anyone who needs one....   Maybe I'll unearth a trace of original red, white or blue somewhere.  He bought the bike already painted like this so had no idea what original color it was.

iirc, vin on neck tag is 111414.  Approx 49K miles showing on odometer.     Overall it's not pretty but is in much much better shape than my well-used V7 Sport was when it came home.    Owner was not as mechanically inclined as some and it wasn't clear that he put many miles on the bike.  Sounds like it got little to no use after their son was born in 2000.  He got it in 97 and after a little riding "the crank locked up", so he had the engine completely rebuilt for $3500+.  Rubber mounted round body 30 Dellorto pumpers with flat tops.  No specifics on camshaft, other than he thought it was a European made equivalent to a Raceco.  Hite something.  New alloy timing gear set.  Flywheel might be lightened.  With a good inspection, cleaning & prep, it may run fine as is.  He said he didn't do the universal joint and made a point of telling me that.   Rear shocks look like oem Eldo/Ambo shocks with the half-egg bumps on the lower alloy ring milled from round profile to flat. ??

Brakes need everything.  Tank looks good on outside and is gorgeous inside.  Gauges, switchgear and lighting seems to be all present and serviceable.  Seat is really nice and in great shape. Very comfortable seating position with the raised clip ons but I'm confused by a Guzzi that has the foot controls on wrong sides.....   None of the plastic fenders, fairings or side covers appear to be cracked or crash damaged at a glance, just peeling paint everywhere making them look like crap.  Wheels and forks look pretty good. Lower fairings apparently don't fit with these swept back head pipes but frame mounts and extended dipstick tube are still in place.  I didn't notice serious road rash on any pipes or the rest of the bike, but the exhaust flanges with plain bolts screwed into heads made me cringe a little. I did notice the bolt-on rubber pads that attach to the foot rest mounts are both missing.

Some pics in his garage and one after I got it onto the trailer-

It's going on a back burner for now while I try to resolve other obligations and think about what to do with it.  It should be a lot of fun.   It's a good looking bike.  While it's already on the trailer, I thought about taking it to the Meltdown tomorrow to park with my Corsa Record.  I know it's not a show bike but know that I would probably more excited to see it as is than 95% of the $$$ built bikes at such shows.  It will likely never be a pristine bike like some here build but I'm very lucky & happy to have another great bike here to enjoy, no matter what I do or don't do with it.   It's so hard to find special bikes like this anymore that in normal fun-money range.  Ive been wanting to turn my HD Evo bagger into something more special & unique.  This fits the bill very well.

There is lots to learn and will be more to come, I'm sure.  Thanks for all the enthusiasm and encouragement, guys.

Interesting and a bit confusing.  I've known racers who modified bikes like that.  Is it 1 up, 4 down as well?

Good luck with the project. I’d look closely at the wiring harness on that bike and if it’s patched up here or there I’d just get a new harness. It’s something I should have done when I bought my CX as it regularly gave me grieve until it was changed. Relays would be good for those switches.  The rubber surround for the headlight use to be easy to source but haven’t seen them lately, and if you’re good with welding I’d fabricate a better H-bracket for the front fairing as they are prone to break from traveling bad roads.

The comment about foot controls being backwards was tongue-in-cheek.  Many of my other bikes have been like this.  I just knew when I got on my V7 Sport with right-shift &left-brake pedals, it was the way things should be.  I'll be fine.

The wiring harness was a concern. This one is not cut up and I'll see how the connectors look.   I put a new one on my V7 Sport because it had been trashed.  Resolving wiring & connector issues sure helps limit the electrical problems on these Italian bikes.  This bike does have green dyna coils and box.  I noticed the headlight surround was missing, wasn't sure if it was hard or soft part(s).  The windscreen also needs replacing.

There may be a little or a lot of welding-related fabrication stuff for this bike.    Before I started my Corsa Record project, I had ideas to make custom bodywork for my V7 Sport simply because it was here.  No cutting, just bolt-on stuff.   But having a bike that is just put-together & ride makes most sense now and knowing what is prone to break is appreciated.  First I'll need to make space to take this bike apart to clean & evaluate everything, and resolve mechanical needs to be resolved.  I really need to address projects already underway and not dilute them with another one right now.

The rubber for the light is soft, I went through a couple of those things from long trips where the fairing was moving too much. Also went through a few of those H-brackets for the fairing. Eventually I ditched everything for a round headlight and LM clock holders.  My bike was in bad shape when purchased, but it was $2,500 bucks which seemed cheap 25 years ago.

The Mayor/Chad and I were talking about the round headlight/fairing conversion earlier today at the show.  He's looking forward to getting his CX from Scout63.  The

I'm glad this bike isn't pristine.  It will be easier to just relax and enjoy it, especially if the engine doesn't need a full rebuild to be a rider.

I was hoping someone here would snatch that thing up. Way to go Cliffrod!

Matteo,
Can you tell us what fairing you have on your bike and maybe post a picture or two from the front? Thanks

Found it on eBay. Can't remember the manufacturer, found the screen and nose on Gustafsson's website. I'll see if I can find it again.

Had a little time this afternoon to study things.  I'm headed to dmv in the morning to do the title while bike is still on the trailer for VIN inspection..

I've found traces of likely original red paint in between mounting tab & pins inside the side covers.   it was probably just another red bike, not white.

Comparing mileage on title in 1997 to mileage showing now in 2022, it's only showing a 3K mile difference.  If he had it fully rebuilt and then not ridden much before being drained & parked as he claimed, that could be very good news.

Both f&r Brembo master cylinders are frozen solid.  whether they're serviceable or will need to be replaced, we'll see.  Whether calipers are any better, ?
