Say it isn't so!

I read somewhere that Honda was discontinuing the Gold Wing completely. I couldn't and still can't believe that. The discontinuation of the manufacturing in the US makes more sense.

13 year old article about moving production back to Japan. All which has happened.
There are no new Hondas at the local shops and all GoldWings being delivered are presold.
Yes, there is a supple chain problem.

I believe this was prompted years ago after Honda was concerned with quality control issues with bikes made in Ohio. That started with the frame issues of the early 1800s through 2005.

It says they're eliminating some Gold Wing models, that wouldn't surprise me. With supply limited production, they'll likely streamline the product line to the most popular and most profitable, just a guess.
Having looked at them recently, they really keep their value.

That's what I think, I can't see Honda cutting the Wing totally.
kk

Ya, I just cant see Honda cutting it. Even if it was the last bike they brought into the US market, they would still have a good market.
-
I also heard the the GoldWing Road Riders Association is closing it's doors too, I've only been a member for four decades.

Read it again.
"Maybe we won’t be that affected by the decision, especially since it seems these are only specific sub-models from series, and because there is a special emphasis on the Japanese market."
The wing is their cash cow in the US.

Here is a future "visual" for you...AN ALL ELECTRIC GOLD WING!!!
...and you thought the previous Gold Wings were "QUIET" when they passed you on the highway at 80mph+

According to this article the cuts are specific to the Japanese market and due to emissions restrictions
https://www.carscoops.com/2022/06/japanese-bike-manufacturers-are-cutting-models-to-comply-with-emissions-regulations/ (https://www.carscoops.com/2022/06/japanese-bike-manufacturers-are-cutting-models-to-comply-with-emissions-regulations/)

Can anyone explain why the Goldwing engine would be especially vulnerable to emission regulations? I would have assumed that engine is about the most sophisticated and “car like” of motorcycle engines, and thus the easiest to bring into compliance.
Unlike, say, a large bore, air-cooled relatively crude Guzzi engine. Or some 600cc sports bike tuned to absolute max horsepower.
What am I missing ?

I am also missing it.

Yep I saw that. As Bob Dylan says, “The times they are a changing”. In my opinion the GWRRA was to zeroed in on elderly riders and did very little to recruit younger (like 40 years old) riders! I have met many younger goldwing riders who wanted nothing to do with GWRRA because it was full of bingo games and other senior citizen events. I don’t know if that is why GWRRA dies but it could be. I was a member for six years but never really enjoyed it.

Hey Bob,
I agree  I'm part of that aging demograhic and never really participated in any of the local chapter stuff, group rides, rally's etc.

I don't the GW is being discontinued in Japan either- at least for emissions reasons. The bike mentioned was the 400 naked and a few legacy bikes that Honda didn't want to upgrade/certify.
Prescott, The article is a couple of paragraphs and a minute read and ambiguous.

Look at the Guzzi hobby vs 10 years ago. We've lost quite a few of the contributors on the board here too that have moved on or lost interest.

Building of Goldwings and other bikes were discontinued in Ohio because the factory was needed to build more Honda and Acura automobiles. Much more profitable for Honda than motorcycles. The Goldwing hasn't been a cash cow in the U.S. for many years nor has any other Honda street bike. Side by sides and off road vehicles are what is keeping the doors open at most dealerships, especially in this part of the country. We have a large Honda, Suzuki, and Can Am dealership nearby that has been in business for a long time and sold more than their share of Wings. The showroom is full, but if they currently have five street bikes in there I will buy your breakfast.
-
I saw a new GW and it was smaller and sportier than previous. I was not quite sure of the market Honda was after. Still a touring oriented bike but not the lounge chair of the past. None of the manufacturers are reaching out to young people.

absolutely true, but Guzzi in general and WG as well... There is a big brain trust of solid gold info that is literally dying off. Thank goodness for Greg Bender and thisoldtractor for archiving a lot of this stuff!
-
It’s not just people dying off, lots of quality folks ie. Pete, Dan etc have left for various reasons.
I’m not looking to start an argument as to why or what it means, it’s just a loss for the board.
-
Yes this forum like any other forum, members who come and go.
No one is forced to join and can leave whenever they wish. One can rest assured that WGC will continue to grow and there are plenty of knowledgeable members here.
No one is irreplaceable.
This thread is about Honda Gold Wings being discontinued. Therefore let’s get back to the subject the thread was intended.

The newer model was supposed to attract a younger buyer. I guess it didn’t work. I would have bought one to replace my 2004 but with its smaller bags it wouldn't work for me and my wife. The luggage was already smaller than my ‘83 BMW RT with top box.

For the record, the GW isn't being discontinued. That was settled from my first reply here.
This discussion is sorta like Seinfield, "a thread about nothing."

I'm glad to hear they will likely still be available here in The USA. When I picked up my new 1000SX a couple of months ago, it was sitting next to a new GW. I was actually surprised at how compact and approachable it appeared, and I could definitely see myself owning one at some point.
-
I know the thread's a couple months old now but according to my dealer Honda's keeping the Wing for the foreseeable future, but has been talking of reducing the options and colors to simplify manufacturing. There were 3 models; Goldwing, Goldwing Tour, and Goldwing Tour Airbag) with multiple colors and two transmission choices.
As of 2022 the Goldwing (base version w/o trunk) is only available in one color matte blue and with only the DCT transmission. The Tour Airbag version only has the DCT transmission as well and is available in blue, only the Tour version still offers a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT now, and is available in blue or black.
Further streamlining units for Honda, the base Goldwing also is tasked with filling the sport touring void that the ST1300 previously had for them.
Navydad is right about motorcycles not being as important to the Japanese manufacturers as SxS's and ATV's. The local dealer here sells over 15 profitable SXS's to every 1 street motorcycle.

For some reason no supply chain issue for Paggio or Triumph. My dealer is surviving on European bikes while the others are scarce. He told me he only received 5 Yamaha Tenere 700 since they were introduced, but has sold 40 Aprilia Tuareg 660s in 2022.
-
I know Japan seems to have suffered more with supply chain problems, and of them Honda maybe the most. My dealer has more problems getting Honda and Yamaha than Kawasaki. Wasn't it Japan who developed "just in time delivery" for manufacturing? That works very efficiently as long as there are no hiccups.
Nevertheless I recently picked up a 2022 Goldwing they got in and they have two more due in pretty soon as 2023's. When Honda SxS's arrive they are generally already sold.

Maybe the Japanese are too proud to buy half their parts from china. Unlike other brands we know.

1. My Tucson buddy "Tom" rode his 2021 Honda Goldwing to Datil last month...It was a very nice touring bike! :thumb:

That has to be the best looking Goldwing model, but wasn’t it unloved by the GW crowd?

I love the light gray gloss it's the color I was interested in but they never got one in last year. So I talked myself out of one, until I happened in a few weeks ago and they had a 22 sitting there that'd just arrived. I don't mind the color but I'm not a fan of matte paint. It might be slightly growing on me though.
I rode to the DC area last weekend and it sure is a comfortable, nice handling, and smooth motorcycle that rides like a Cadillac over road irregularities. I have a rear rack ordered. A friend gave me a 5" taller take-off windshield he had off his Goldwing Tour which I fitted but it was a little too tall, so I cut 2 1/4" off it and it's perfect for me. It is the one the bike in the image.

That gray 'wing is perhaps the only attractive 'wing they ever built. Actually a pretty cool looking bike.

The previous "stripped Goldwing" model was called the F6B...and I thought these were handsome also. :thumb: :boozing:   I believe the new 2022 Goldwing replaced these...

Honda may be hurting sales by limiting a couple models to the DCT transmission. There had been a lot of comments on how slow speed operation is hindered by that type of transmission.

Actually Henry Ford developed the JIT supply management system when he saw that he had inventory sitting around at his factory for building cars. The Japanese fully utilized the JIT philosophy as observed with other manufacturers and with input from Dr. Deming. What helped the Japanese is the short distances from their suppliers to the factories.
JIT is for raw supplies to the factory so finished goods can pop out the other end. JIT is not from the factory to the consumer through the importer and retailer. That is another problem. The Marysville, OH plant met the bare minimums to have the "Made in USA" label on it. Lower costs for US domestic consumption.
JIT was refined by the Japanese but did not invent it. Same as the car and motorcycle. Harley-Davidson kickstarted the motorcycle industry in Japan by allowing the motorcycles to be made in Japan under license in the 1930's.

Edited post. There is a guy in Kona with a 2018 Goldwing for sale. Root beer/bronze color wants $19K. I'd say he's very optimistic about the price.

My ol' "Root Beer Float" - 1978 GL1000 - *SOLD* 6 years ago for $2500...It was a turn-key bike in excellent condition and needed nothing. Now, on BaT, these easily go for $5K-$6K or more....   Who knew?
