I was on my way to San Diego for Navy Boot Camp.
Being a Navy brat (Dad served 22 years USN) I thought I knew what to expect.....
was I wrong!!!
Ended up serving 12 years Active duty and 8 years Weekend warrior. Never thought I would spend
more than 4 years! Just needed something to provide for my new Bride Laurie!
Amazing how the time flies....
Enjoy everyday with your friends and family...cherish the moments.

Thanks for your service. USN 1962-1966. I'm glad I was in and glad I got out after 4 years 3 months. The VA hospitals have treated me very well.

55 years ago on this coming August 8th I reported for induction into the Armed Forces...During my two years I met some of finest men and some who were not fit to tie my boots...

You definitely stayed in longer then I could. Joined USAF 47 years ago, got out after 4, than 2 years guard while going through undergrad. After awhile I got tired of some of the people. But upon reflection those were good learning years. Glad I went in glad I got out.

only 52 years ago I entered navy boot camp, Great Lakes , Illinois. then ended up on an old diesel sub, then 48 years ago bought my first Guzzi, an Eldorado. I preferred the ride on the Guzzi

Thank you for your service! USAF 1972-1976. Saw my first Guzzi in '73. My shop chief had a then new Eldorado. I was riding a rigid Bonneville chopper.

45 years ago, and a few months, it was navy bootcamp for me. When I got off the airplane in San Diego the group of navy recruits that I was part of were told to stand on a colored circle. I looked down and got on a blue one. I notice that some of them were the red/orange color. The Chief in charge said anyone standing on a orange circle raise your hand. Some did. The Chief then said congratulations you are now in the Marines! Gunny take 'em away! Last I saw of those guys. Bootcamp was easy. I volunteered for all kinds of stuff. I got in a special company (that's what it was called-a special company) and it was so special that bootcamp lasted an extra two weeks. We got 4 hours of sleep a night for the entire time, 6 hours a day of P.T. and 6 hours of classroom time everyday. Three meals a day that took less than 60 seconds to eat. Then it was off to more schooling. I served on two nuke boats, a 637 class and a new 688. Made rate fast, got a thin redacted service record and nothing else. I didn't get any sleep until 1980. Would I do it again? Hell no.

It was 44 years ago for me as well. Eight years in the AF, all of it in SAC. First hitch was in recon, got some good trips.
Second was in flight test on new aircraft then rapid deployment, both good duty a lot of the time. mostly no regrets

USAF 73- 77, 2 years RAF Lakenheath UK TAC good gig. 2 years Ellsworth AFB Rapid City SD, SAC sucked compared to TAC, I understand SAC and TAC are no longer separated. Best thing that happened in Rapid City was meeting and marrying my current wife of 44 years. Oh exploring the Black Hills was good to, but the SAC experience sucked.

44 years ago I bought my ‘76 LeMans. Navy ‘63-67. First ship was an APA out of San Diego. Beautiful city back then as was most of California. Way too crowded for me today. Got to see a lot of the western Pacific which was my goal but I was glad to get back to civilian life.

I was in the Army from Oct. 68 to Aug 71. Most of that time was spent at Fort Bragg,Nc. as a Combat Engineer. I was never deployed any where.
Looking back I see I was very lucky, most guy were going to Viet Nam. The only note worthy thing I did was jump from an airplane 25 times.

I really lucked out, most of SAC was miserable and I happened to get in units that were specialized and mostly left to our own devices to the extent that if we performed well in missions , unit evaluations and war games we were left alone unless something bad happened. I remember hearing the best job in SAC was missel silo grounds keeper. I spent time at RAF Mildenhall, near Lakenheath, when we had missions with the SR71. They soon figured out that once our planes were cocked and loaded we just waited so they would tap into that labor pool to give the A model tanker crews a rest (we were Q models for the SR).I kept my mouth shut and maintained a low profile so when we weren’t flying I would go to roll call and then ease on out the back door, hop on the shuttle and escape. A lot of the time we had forty five minutes to get ourselves on the airplane because we never knew where and for how long it would be gone and as a crew chief I had to go with it. We had to stay at the same places as the officers when the base was full for crew integrity, in case we had to leave quickly. The rest of SAC was not that easy….

I was recruited out of 15 years of civilian church work to be a chaplain in 2000. My 3rd day of active duty was 911, and I was at the 101st. 6 deployments with combat units and 21 years later, I have 3 years left to go till retirement.

USN, April, 1952 to April, 1956. Other than Boot Camp at Great Lakes and a couple of diesel engine repair schools, I spent the complete time at sea on APA Class ships. It was a great experience and I benefitted through the use of the GI Bill to get my education paid for (sort of). Glad I did it. The military life helped me grow up and mature.
