Spoiler alert, not giving away any plot here, just giving my opinion.
I saw the new Bond film No Time To Die last Friday. I've been a huge Bond fan since seeing Thunderball when I was 8 years old. My favorite Bonds in descending order are Sean Connery, Daniel Craig, George Lazenby (On Her Majesty's Secret Service), Roger Moore, then Pierce Brosnan. Won't mention others. No Time To Die got universally glowing reviews. Me? Meh. It's a chick flick. Craig gets all emotional far too often. I miss the misogynistic, womanizing, cad that I know Bond to be. The attempts at witty humor largely fall flat. I actually enjoyed Roger Moore cracking stupid jokes. I loved Craig in Casino Royale when he stuck to his brooding, tough guy schtick. Now the future of Bond movies is in peril. What a run though.
On another note, this movie is almost 3 hours long. While lined up shoulder to shoulder at the bathroom urinals afterwards with 5 other guys, It occurred to me that they should have named the movie No Time To Pee.

I was in the Peterson Automotive Museum last week and they currently have all the Bond vehicles on display.

James Bond as written in the 60’s and played by Sean Connery, ( my favorite also, even though I grew up with Roger Moore as Bond), is gone forever.
Too many people are offended by the sexist stereotypes. Even thought there women in the early Bond movies, most of the females were damsels in distress.
Daniel Craig has been a great Bond for the time. Tough and confident while more respectful of women.
Have not seen the new one.
Rumors of a female Bond are on the internet, that would truly be something different..

I'm a lifelong Bond fanboy. I can live with the invisible cars, windsurfing a sunami, and impossible stunts. Having anyone other than a white male actor with a passable Scottish accent playing the lead role would be like Pee Wee Herman playing the lead in "Shaft."

I saw it today, and will politely disagree with many of the thoughts posted already.
Although not alive when many of them were released, I have seen every Bond film, and Daniel Craig is the best one. He's the only one who's been a character fleshed out enough to be remotely human. All the others are no different than every one trick pony superhero characters that are so popular today. If I wanted an unstoppable and emotionless one dimensional character, I'd just watch one of the two dozen Marvel films that come out every year.
As far as speculation on the next Bond, I'll be refraining from my thoughts on that as I don't want my apparently "progressive" nature to end up getting this thread locked. Change isn't something to be afraid of, especially when it's just a film character.

did someone say bond....? 007 at your service, on " secret mission" in remote Alaska (white mountain) astride 2003 ski-doo 007 special edition being chased by two " mini-villians" on a Yamaha bravo.

I thought Craig was the best ever, by a long way. But then I'm not a huge fan of the whole franchise. Its OK. As long is Bond is a Commander in the Royal Navy, that's about all that's needed. Idris Elba would have been great!

I heard rumors that the next Bond will be female as well. I disagree w the idea, as that's not "Bond" at all.
The French did a series of Bond-like comedies, called OSS 177, that are really funny. I think they also did serious versions of OSS 117, but I haven't seen any yet.

P.S. Rons; you are in RI? I'm just over the state line, in Mass.

Maybe Bond has finally run his course. I think your approach to Bond depends on your age. The books by Fleming were more hard boiled than the movies tended to be. More tradecraft, less toys and less kissy face. But, as a movie producer, you have to hold an audience's attention for 2 hours and if you stuck to the books, you probably had an hour of material. I think the original few stayed closer to the books, but by Roger Moore's time, they almost became cartoon-like. Moore has his fans as many of the movies were great fun if you didn't take them seriously.
Bond is just one of those cultural phenoms of its times like Star Trek or Star Wars. Speaking of which, the Trek franchise was able to change with the times because they just created a new captain every once in a while. Bond always has to be Bond. Some people will like how the producers change the character, others feel betrayed. Life goes on.

I prefer my spies to be a bit more realistic; less James Bond and more George Smiley, Ricky Tarr, and of course Jim Prideux as played by the excellent Mark Strong. Even Rudolf Abel.
-
There may be only one James Bond, but Agent 007 can be any race or gender. I think a female Agent 007 of Indian or Hong Kong descent would be pretty bad ass.

Ill throw in my .02, I think Sean was the best and of course the one many think of when they think JB. I thought  Roger was also good but a bit on the corny side and he even played it up that way, I heard an interesting quote on the today show, one of the anchors said he though Pierce was the best JB with the worst stories or something to that effect,
I also like DC but I thought he made a comment to the effect that he would rather walk over broken glass than do another 007 movie.
I think as times change, the story lines will be less sexist, etc and characters like Pussy Galore will be named differently.

"Pussy galore" was over the top even for the era it came out. Made things too cartoonish.

My favorite Bond movies were "From Russia with Love" and (the "Bond franchise" version of) "Casino Royale". I liked them because they could plausibly be true, unlike all the other farfetched plots. And they also happen to be chick flicks too.
For the reboot, I'd like to see "Commander Bond": Younger Royal Navy man that becomes 007 at the end of the movie. I have thoughts on the screenplay, perhaps the Broccoli's will pay me for it? And then the other movies to follow.

a white dude named James Bond is probably not the way forward for the series... Hell, there have been like 30 movies around the "same" agent and half of them are so cheesey you can't sit thru it, so Mr. Bond has run his race...
Good thing we have agents 001-006 and 008-????? to follow along and tell the tales. I do like the idea of an agent descended from one of the colonies picking up the mantle: India, Singapore, Malaysia, or Saharan Africa... Could be cool! No Australians tho, them fellers talk funny
-
Ya'll got one thing 100% right tho... no movie should be 3 hours! Remember when movies ran 90min? What happened to that?
-
Bond? James Bond? Never heard of her.

Don't forget that real spies are govt workers, bureaucrats and traitors.

^ aaaah I read Le Carré's Karla trilogy this summer, enjoyed them all very much.
But I did miss the film, seems I should do something about that.
Is there a generational factor regarding who' done the best Bond?
Growing up with Sean Connery's interpretation, it's hard to imagine anyone could do it better. He had it all, dry humour, lewdness, elegance, cruelty, charm..... or?
-
Does Bond die in the end?
Mike

I actually found the plot of Quantum of Solace to be somewhat believable: generic South American dictator privatizes his entire country's water supply, and badness ensues. Not exactly fiction.
-
Everybody has their favorites, I suppose. To me, Bond is Connery, Moore & Brosnan. I've never been impressed with Craig.

Too Late Mr Mayor, there was an Australian who played 007 some years ago, he only lasted one movie though. Perhaps someone from the US next time, as it would qualify as a former colony (or several!)

Pee Wee Herman playing the lead in "Shaft."
Actually that would be a bit like art imitating life..

In regard to "George Smiley" video. As much as I admire Oldman as an actor, try to find the original 6 episode PBS version. To me, the movie format required far too much cutting of the story. Sir Alec Guiness, Ian Richardson - some of the finest Brit actors of their generation.

Peter Postelwaite should never go unreferenced

I really liked both versions. Anyone remember "Callan" - that was pretty gritty.

Just for fun, If you folks had to pick ONE James Bond movie as being the "best ever" what would that be? Or possibly the "top three"? I an not a big TV person, and have only seen a couple of James Bond movies. I would like to watch a couple before going to the theatre with my wife to see this new one.

Go to the theatre with your wife without watching any prior Bond movies. Sit in the balcony, or back row if no balcony available. If you like the movie great, if not, be 16 and at the movie with your girlfriend.

Saw it yesterday. Perhaps because it's just my first movie since -- but I think it's the best Bond ever. Even the usual Sci-Fi rubbish seemed plausible. Craig's the only Bond series with a start and finish which gives it some continuity.
Lots of Triumph motorcycle and Aston Martin product placement. :bike-037:

Sean Connery is the only James Bond. The rest were all wannabes. Gary Oldman's best role was in The Fifth Element.

As a boy, I had a thing for agent 99... but that was before i got smart...

I thoroughly enjoyed NTTD. Highly recommended. Nice references to other movies, especially OHMSS. If you like action movies, go see it in a theater.

007 should be male, a cad. Black, white, Asian. :bike-037:
a female, should be 009, 003 or anything.
-
Over the years Bond got too serious, too politically correct, and too boring. Star Wars followed the same formula and is now obsolete, too. If you want to make a sensitive, empathetic, health-food eating, protein-shake drinking spy character - do it with a different name, different music, and different gender. Just leave the Bond formula alone!
