Headlight question
« on: November 25, 2022, 12:21:54 PM »
I assume other Guzzis are like my 1200 Sport that when I kill the engine, the headlight turns off even though the ignition switch is on.

Is there a simple way to change that or is it best to keep it that way?

Can the high beam and low beams be adjusted independently? Or are they set?

In the spring I plan to install Denali lights. Can I wire them so they come on with the ignition and stay on when I hit the kill switch so I have light at the camp to set up my tent or will they turn off with the kill switch?

It's like any other Breva. Easiest way would wire a hotwire from batt to relay to headlight spliced in. Turn on anytime you want w/toggle or other switch.

Jeez mate I’d be careful with that.
If you run the battery too low, you won’t get it started in the morning. Trying to bump start it on grass will be nigh impossible.
But up to you.

Just wire the Denali's direct to the battery with the supplied wire harness/relay/on-off button

Same way I installed Denali D4's on my Breva.

Can I wire it so the Denali lights automatically come on with my headlight?

I'm sure you can but I wouldn't want to. The D4's I have mounted can fry a cat at 100 yards and prefer to turn them on and off when I desire.

I also mounted Baja Designs Squadron Sport's on my 1200RT and find them just as good if not better than the Denali's.

I need them primarily to improve the terrible headlight pattern at night as well as making me seen by other drivers during the day. That’s why I’d like them on all the time. Would that be a problem for my battery or electrical system?

There is a way of jumping off headlight relay to the spot's relay for lights on. AND I'm sure Roy most likely did a paragraph on it IF you do a search

The bike has a relay (30) that closes when the motor is running
https://www.thisoldtractor.com/guzzi007/schematics/2007_Norge_ABS.gif
Yhe Auxillary Injection relay is only energized while the motor is running
Note the bikes headlight is not switched by that relay but relay 3 & 4, you can change that if you wish however it may not be a good idea for the headlight to go out if the engine stops.
You could also just wire the lamps directly from the Auxiliary injection relay.
Some Guzzi's have a city light or park light that comes on as long as the key is ON, I often use that light to wire the driving lights from. For sure if you don't have the lights on the Auxiliary relay or ignition switch you will have to deal with a flat battery before too long.

I'd recommend wiring them independently of the headlines at first. I was very surprised at the intensity of the spotlights I mounted on my T3, and would never want them to be on all the time. Try them at night with your headlights, and then decide.

As I was saying the spotlights are typically 10 Watts
hook them onto the parking lights (55) in the headlight bucket and the tail Light., very easy to find those wires and no significant change to any loom.
You shouldn't need a relay the spots only need about 9 Volts and the ignition switch contacts good for plenty of current.

I ran my Denali’s by running a wire from the high beam supply through a relay that throws when I select high beam, but also a switch in that circuit so I can isolate the relay completely.
The relay hooked into the high beam supply wire, is supplied by a dedicated and fused heavy gauge wire direct from the battery to the spots.

Do away with the stock headlight bucket and do the following modification I did:

Just curious, what is the wattage on the Denali lights?

The headlight bucket switch probably works on the Breva 1100 but with the 1200 sport you have the fairing and the opening for that headlight is more elliptical. It appears to be 8 1/2 inches high and 8 inches wide so it probably wouldn’t be a good fit in that fairing opening

the Denali spots seem very expensive, Superbright LED.com have spots for around $40 each

Like the above posts, I used the little "parking light" circuit for 12V key switched power for the spots on my EV. On my Griso, accessibility and routing made this approach less than ideal. If you use a relay as I did, and mount it alongside the other relays as I did, then the taillight feed is a convenient source of 12V switched power for the relay. You'll have to run cables forward to the lights, but that may be a cleaner routing proposition than tapping into the harnesses near the headstock.
