Wow! Thanks for posting that Meinolf and thanks to Beard for the incredible work. I'm particularly intrigued by the fuel consumption scalar as the inaccuracy of the readout has always annoyed me.

It might seem that Beard put all the work in, but it's very much work of Meinolf in it.

Sorry Meinolf. It wasn't my intention to disregard anyone's contribution. A big "thank you" to EVERYBODY contributing to this! I can't begin to imagine how much work is involved. I'm just a user, but very grateful for this tool!

Merely reading the list of changes gives a hint of the effort involved in this - boggles my mind. On behalf of all of us, thank you, thank you, thank you.

you probably underestimate the time and effort needed. The published XDFs are but a small subset of the total. I've never bothered to count the parameters, it's something like 500+.

Anyway our reward is if you actually look into it and use it. Try to understand a bit and ask when you want.

My 2008 Norge 1200 has a beetle map with lamda disabled...would there be any advantage to switching to this setup? Or am I even asking the queztion correctly?

I'm sure the GuzziDiag creators could explain better, but think of the xdf file as being a window to look into the various tables within a map. It isn't a map itself. This new xdf allows you to read the map better and gives access to some parts of it previously not visible.

Correct. The map is what the engine runs on, now you have the Beetle map.  This xdf is to know where things can be changed in the map. Over time knowledge has been growing so time to share.

Hi,

indeed a valid question, if you are asking if closed loop (lambda enabled) is equal or better than open loop.

Mark is known for providing well designed modifications to a number of BINs by correcting oversights (sloppy adaption by the OEM) and the compromisses necessitated by the respective legal requirements.

Keeping emissions down requires a catalysator. Which does work best at a mixture of 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel, which is equal to lambda 1. The (narrow band) lambda probe measures the exhaust gas. It's design is similar to a switch, an on/off function for lean/rich mixture. If the diverse maps, such as main and delta fuel and ignition, are well designed, closed loop is the prefered mode. It's doesn't provide the best power, which is at lambda 0.86, nor the best economy, which is at lambda 1.06, but is good compromise.

And, the correction mechanism which are part of the closed loop operation work, take care of the inevitable wear and tear over time. LTFT (long term fuel trim) corrects wear in the low load area, STFT (short term fuel trim) dynamically corrects the higher load areas.

Changing the closed loop switch point from lambda 1.0 to, for example, 0.92 would still give good economy and more torque/power.

The biggest drawback, in my experience, is the missing synchronisation of the AFR of the two cylinders. Getting this right is 95% of the formula to have a well running engine.

Mark supplies maps for bikes of different capacities, muffler variations and owner expectations.  The maps offered here (and a big thanks for your work) appear to be differing only by the number of lambda sensors present.

I believe the factory maps for all the single lambda bikes are not identical, I'm not sure about the two lambda versions.  Isn't there more to this one-size-fits-all required?

Guys, the files that Meinolf has posted here are NOT maps. They are plugins for TunerPro, the software most of us use to edit & modify maps. The maps are not easily human-readable, but the XDF allows us to display a map in an easily read format.

Thank you for correcting my misconception...I have next to no complaints about the mapping...some slight popping on overrun from time to time and a small amount of barely-part-throttle twitchiness when running thru metropolitan speed zones but everything else is outstanding!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the clarification. Sometimes the obvious is to obvious.

Guys, the files that Meinolf has posted here are NOT maps. They are plugins for TunerPro, the software most of us use to edit & modify maps. The maps are not easily human-readable, but the XDF allows us to display a map in an easily read format.

The basic procedure is simple. The ECU stores the program code and adjustable parameters in binary format. The closest approximation of a human readable format is hexadecimal.

Using appropriate tools for disassemblythe hexadecimal format is translated into assembler code. Which doesn't contain any comments or a help file, it's pure code. Then the tedious process of reverse engineering the code begins.

Which, following addresses, leads to a table.

which then is brought into the XDF

which eventually leads to a more or less comprehensive XDF.

Cheers
Meinolf
