'04 Cali EV Triple Clamp Chrome Nut Allan Size?
« on: July 31, 2016, 12:51:22 PM »
I would like to adjust the fork bearings on my EV. I need to loosen the chrome locking nut with the allan socket hole to adjust the spanner style nut.

What size allan key do I use??

I tried an 8mm as it fits rather loose, 10 is too big. None of my sets have a 9mm and a tool truck guy can't remember ever seeing a 9mm. Maybe the allan hole is striped?

I read the manual and it says to just loosen the chrome nut then loosen the clamping allan bolt, at least to remove the triple clamp. Not planning to remove the triple clamp, just adjust the spanner style nut.

Thank you,
Tom

3/8 IN might do the trick .

Can't remember for certain but if the nut won't turn it may well be that the pinch bolt on the top yoke is preventing it.

Support the bike under the sump to unload the forks, loosen all the top yoke pinch bolts and try again. It may be a combination of factors preventing the nut from moving.

I tried the largest inch size I have in a HF set, probably 3/8, loose fit, worse than 8mm.

When I tried to loosen the chrome nut, the 8mm wrench was a bit loose in the hex hole, so I didn't want to bugger up the hex hole by applying too much force on the wrench. I'll look at loosening the pinch bolts and see if that will free it up.

Still the question though...8mm or 9mm is the proper size?

Thanks so far!

I just put a 10mm in 2 different nuts, 98EV & 1100 Sport, same nut on both. Just trying to look busy in the garage.

When I get home tonight, I'll check the inch size set and see if it's 3/8" and try it again.

I'll also try another brand of allans that I have and see if maybe the 10mm that I tried was made oversize. The one I tried appeared WAY too big to fit.

Both sets I tried were HF sets, so ...."well there's your problem"

Thank you all again! I'll let you know what I find out tonight.

Off the top of my head I would swear that my 2004 EV is 10MM. Not sure I have a 9MM.

OK, so I played with my allan wrenches and sockets. Even found a large allan wrench that was in the EV tool kit.

Well I could swear it should be 8mm, tried a 10mm wobble allan socket drive, still wouldn't fit. All my 10mm were too big, 10mm fits the tranny fill cap.

Adding some pics, maybe the hole is buggered up. It does look odd. It almost looks like a Torx, but not sharp enough. Hope you can see what I see in the pics.

If it is a 10mm, I'll have to pull my bars off to get a straight shot at the hole since the wobble type would not go in.

Thank you,
Tom

OK, I was so curious, that I sat my beer down..... :boozing:

My 2004 is 8MM. A loose 8MM. I have a 9MM, but it would not fit. Not sure why the 8MM is oddly loose and a 9MM is too large. But mine turned easily with the 8MM.

OMG, does the hex inside look odd? Mine does not have the normal points and flats. The shape of the one on this bike reminds me of a locking wheel nut for a car. The points seem rounded and the flats don't look flat, more like bumps to make the flat. Maybe an attempt to allow the wrench to fit in, in more than a few angles by not having the flats?

Dusty, maybe there are two different designs?? BTW, tried the 3/8, no go. Thanks for the thought!!

I guess I try an 8mm and see what happens??

Thanks again,

or hammer in a torx socket just to get it off.. I say again - that looks buggered ..by using an undersized wrench..

I'll pull it in the garage on Monday and see what happens. It takes more pull than I can do by hand even with the one pinch bolt loose. Maybe I'm not pulling hard enough for fear of striping the hole. I'll get a bit more aggressive and see what happens.

fotoguzzi, might take you up on it?

A little.

If you loosen the pinch bolts on the upper triple clamp. Then tighten the ring against the upper bearing a little with a spanner. Then use a rubber mallet or such to knock the upper triple clamp down a fraction, that should free that chrome nut.

Wow. Surgery...I'd thought it would be more clear cut, but not so. That does look a little odd.

But no expert here, as you know, [Tom H]. PM'd you earlier.

All the advice above better than anything I can offer, but I have to confess in the Eldo days when such things happened to me I'd find an allen that was a shade too big and grind it down to fit.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

OMG, yours looks just like the one I have. Umm..like there are no flat sections like a normal hex, another way to say it, not like the pinch bolt has.

Monday evening I'll follow the advise and see what happens.

BTW: re-read the workshop manual to remove the top triple clamp is to loosen the chrome nut then loosen the pinch bolt. Seemed backward to me?? Also looked very close at the allan wrench pic, looks like it might be a 10mm, but we just confirmed that ours are not.

Thanks again!!!!

Maybe it's 8mm and hogged out by people doing the sequence backwards.

Normzone,

That's not a bad idea. Not the first time I've made a service tool.

I pulled the bike into the garage tonight.

I loosened the pinch bolt and with the feeling that this "should" be 8mm though very loose. I put the 8mm in, and with the aid of a cheater bar, it turned. Thought I was going to feel that oopsie slip, but the allan wrench held tight. I made my bearing adjustment and tightened it back up as well as the pinch bolt.

I wanted to thank again all who took the time to help me with this!!!!!

Without the guidance this would have been a much tougher job as I would not have tried the 8mm for fear of striping the hex hole.

Such a simple job to do, just needed to make sure I had the right tool BEFORE I broke something!!

Loops do seem much simpler

Thanks again!!!!

If you got a 10mm allen and tapered the nose it would wedge into the sloppy hole tightly.  This is just a big lock nut for the head adjustment nut.  It only needs to touch the nut to hold it in place.  The pinch bolt then holds the lock nut in place.  So it doesn't need replacing -- just make a tool for it and move on to a real problem.  No real problems?  Wait a few minutes.  Something will reveal itself.

How's the pricing on that cap, Brad?  I might take it, but I wouldn't want you to get the sequence backwards, so you can leave the rest of the stuff attached to it and I'll sort it out when I get it.  No discount expected for not putting you through the agony of separating it from -- what did you say -- silverware?

Rodekyll and fotoguzzi.

I think this is the way THIS lock nut is supposed to be, weird though!

Next time I will take the time and make a allan wrench and socket style allan to fit it perfectly. The 8mm that I think it is supposed to be worked fine, it just had me a bit nervous.

Thanks again,

Wrap an 8mm in leftover beer can, I mean, shim stock.  :boozing:
If you grind something, grind down a 9mm. It'll never be needed for anything else.
