Home Detention -Stelvio
« on: March 28, 2020, 01:13:22 AM »
I’ve just been sentenced to 6-months home detention.
Apparently I am an essential employee and I can work from home.
Set up the home office, logged into the main frame .... and I am bored.

The 2012 Stelvio is on the stand for its 50k Km service and to fix a few minors that I haven’t had time to fix.
Primary of these are leaking fuel from the bottom of the fuel inlets.
A Facebook friend has pointed me in the direction of “worn bushes” and that there is probably oil in the air box from over filling (guilty as charged at 20k service only)

Has anybody got any tips as to the best way to rectify this
Competent home mechanic with a well equipped home workshop

Cheers

It looks as though the oil is coming from the throttle body but that might be deceptive, it may be blowing back there and dripping from the low spot.
Look inside the air box, is it oily in there?
One of the engine breathers connects to the Air Box is that really a good idea, why not spit it out on the ground instead of gumming up the throttle body, just asking.

Here's a link to Bill Havens adventure into re-sealing his throttle bodies due to fuel dripping from the throttle shafts and possible worn bores. Sounds similar to your dilemma. Hope this helps.

New question

As someone who can be a bit of a “bull at a gate”

What is the secret of disconnecting the fuel line from the tank?

Pipe exits from fuel pump insert in tank and the splits at a t-junction on the way to the throttle bodies

My service manual is based on the small tank model and it appears to have a different procedure

What? No QD (so called) fitting? If I were you you, I'd be giving Pete a ring.

The fitting is a 'QD' type, but not a great design.
The locking tangs are fairly fragile, and if/when they get damaged, it's impossible to disconnect without virtually destroying the unit (askmehowIknow).
The 'trick' is to unplug the Pump Connector, then try to start the Engine.
This depressurises the Fuel Line, making it easier to disconnect the Connector.

I binned mine after removing (what was left of) it, and added a long length of Hose, connected permanently.
The Hose is long enough for me to lift the Tank out of the way and hang it up above the Bike, or sit it on the Airbox Lid, to get to the top of the Engine.
The 'excess' Hose sits nicely down under the Tank, it's Spiral-Wrapped to protect it from chafing.

It's a Guzzi, so of course, there's a trick to it.

Heard from Pete - he says to email him - before you bugger it up. Pete's never been one to soft pedal & let you down gently.

The later tanks are not as bad as the rest of the CARC's. Pull back on black ring and bull back on hose, they come right out. Never had a problem w/newer Stelvio tanks.

This depressurises the Fuel Line, making it easier to disconnect the Connector.
As Doc says, this makes it much easier, the engine might run for about 5 seconds.

I wonder about the wisdom of leaving the breather vent into the air box, it makes a hell of a mess.
Would it not be better to divert it to the ground, perhaps through another oil/air separator.
Before someone jumps all over me for polluting the environment, its only a fraction of what happens when you take off the OEM exhaust doing away with the catalytic converter.

I disconnected the breather hose to the airbox and capped off the airbox. There is no need for a second oil/air separator. Previously I always filled oil up halfway up the dipstick and never had any oil residue in my airbox. Sending blowby gasses to my intake is simply against my philosophy.

As above.
If you don't overfill the Engine Oil, you shouldn't get any Oil into the Airbox.

Half-way between the two marks on the Dipstick is the 'correct' level.
