RUBBER COMPRESSION NUTS
« on: April 03, 2020, 03:50:13 PM »
You know those rubber compression nuts, frequently used in farings and body parts?  Is there a ready source of them other than the Guzzi parts catalog?

You can certainly order them from a dealer or motorcycle supply.

Ace Hardware usually has a good selection of well nuts- that's what they are referred to.   If you have the old ones, you might might be able to refurbish the rubber and reuse.

They sell well nuts on amazon and places like that, pretty cheap, but they aren't the same dimensions as the originals.

On my Quota, the MG part number is GU93231605 .  I ordered some from MGCycles.

They are an M4 size thread,  height 17mm, barrel diameter 10mm, and flange diameter 13mm.

For the Amazon m4 well nuts, height is 12.67mm, barrel diameter 7.92mm, flange diameter 11.13 .  (on ones I see that are available)

Height could also be considered "length" really.

I've been using the expensive MGCycles ones, drop in, bolt up, same as stock, no issues.  Maybe those others (amazon, hw store) work fine?  Not sure.  The 10mm vs. ~8mm barrel diameter seems to be the most risky ... will it hold parts properly?  Don't know.

I did a bit more looking, seems with the normal low priced ones, a 4m nut gets you a ~8mm barrel diameter ... a 5m nut gets you a 10mm barrel diameter.

On my Quota, the originals (and the ones from MGCycles) has a 4m nut and a 10mm barrel diameter.

Since my Quota has a number of pretty high quality 4mm screws, I'm sticking with the 4m/10mm combo.

Seems silly to replace all your 4mm screws for 5mm screws to get cheaper well nuts.  And again, not sure how well the 8mm diameter barrel will work in a 10mm hole.

Not sure if this is just a Quota thing, but guessing not.

Even if I replaced them all, they won't break the bank. Maybe I should stick to stock.

Besides, I need a few more bits and pieces.  Might as well get some value out of the shipping charges.
