My gas tank is so small...
« on: April 18, 2021, 12:38:47 PM »
Saw this Indian Scout at the local CYCLE GEAR store down in the Valley on Friday.  The owner said his gas tank is so small, he has to carry a spare Roto-PAX gas container with him all the time!!!

He said he is lucky to get 100 miles out of a tank!!         Funny...the tank looks much bigger than it actually is...

Had a Honda ACE 1100 that was nearly that bad; 125 miles to reserve.

Man, that's not much more than a Sportster with a Peanut tank. My V7lll holds quite a bit more fuel than my Audace. The Audace tank looks huge in comparison.

That's not great.  The v9 has a tank rated at 3.96 gallons, but I know it will go at least 170 miles on that 4 gallon, but I haven't pushed it far enough to know.

I feel that my EV and Cali 1000i both have peanut tanks as well. Around 125 miles my fuel light comes on. Longer rides I prefer my 86 Lemans or Breva 1100

JJ-What's the range on your Centauro?

18 Litres / 4.7 US gal gas tank capacity -

- - 160-165 miles before the "RESERVE" light glows orange

...then MAYBE another 20-25 miles before it goes dry...    I average about 40-45 MPG... :thumb:

Define peanut tank?

There's the 2.3, 3.3, and then the Walnut 4.5

Anyway the Scout has a 3.3, and tends to get somewhere in the 40's mpg, so should have a theoretical 120-140 mile range.

But I know nothing about the low fuel light and what that particular rider does.

On Sportys it wasn't uncommon for an 883 to see 50+ and a good 125-140 before the small reserve with the 3.3 tank. 1200's often got a little less per gallon, closer to 40 or so.

Solid 300 with my 1100 Breva.. It holds 6.5 from dead empty.. It's been in the low 50 mpg out on the mountain roads I ride at..  I  did 320 yesterday. My 1100 monster was the best big bore MPG rig,but the pipes, weight, and tuning helped that over 60 MPG once, and a while. 4 gal tank still limits it's range compared to my Breva.. Figured the 400 pounds wet weight helped it along too.. I understand range issues, owning a new VTR Superhawk 998,Aprila twins, etc.. Although the second gen was pretty dang good..

I have my Breva setup for a 1.2 gal Rotopax, but not sure why I would need it.. Still 7.7 gals total is some long distance range..

Barely a hundred miles to a tank on a Scout- either that dude is on the throttle all the time or it needs to be tuned. I have two friends with three scouts between them (one owns two) and they get get 45-50 mpg.
A few years ago there was a member of this group who rode cross country with his wife on a pair of scouts and, if I remember correctly, their gas mileage was in the high 40's.
On the early Scouts the gas mileage was all over the map, but barely a hundred to the tank doesn't seem right. Well, they are fun to ride and twisting the throttle on a Scout is a good time, so....

Tiny tank syndrome is why I dissed the V9 series , that & the fat front tire . Iíve squeezed 200 Mi. Out of my V7II on a few occasions, the charcoal canister-ectomy was one of the first modifications done .

Squeezed?!?

What's wrong with it?

My low fuel light goes on a 200 and I usually start looking by 250. I've seen 275 and one of these days I'll SQUEEZE 300 out of it.

Oh, this weekend was funny though. I checked the tripmeter before I left home and saw I already had 150 miles on the tank, so when I hit 250 and the light hadn't come on yet I started to get worried. Got gas by 270 and only put 3 gallons in - confirming my suspect theory that I'd simply refilled it for some reason at a partial tank and forgot to reset my meter.

The large tank capacity is one of my reasons for purchasing the V7 II. Fuel light comes on at 200 miles and it fills with only four gallons. Should be able to go for 250 miles before dry. I won't push it. (Pun intended!)

Yup...like K says..."My 1400 tour got 120-130 before low fuel light".
At that point when I fill, it takes between 3.2 and 3.5 gallons.  At about 40 mpg, that's a range of 200 mi. (5.4 gal tank).  I routinely get between 40-45 mpg, depending on how and where I ride.  I may be hallucinating, but I seem to get somewhat better mpg if I fill with 93 alcohol free.  It's hard to tell without further study.

Be well, stay well,

Gotta be honest that I got spoiled with V7's tank.  :boozing:

I know there are bigger one out there but almost none of them are on midsize street bikes.

Now everytime when I look for another bike, I keep on searching for anything that is around 5 gal or more... :boozing:

Brings back memories of n 98 magna 750. Tank looked huge, but it was all a big shell for the giant air box, for the 4 thirsty carbs. That bike would hit reserve at 80 miles. My wife ran it dry on reserve one time at 120 miles total! What an annoying bike on a tour.

On my EV, the low fuel light comes on and you better find a filling station. I have run in empty at just over 100 miles, at high speed, into a South Dakota headwind.
My new V85, after a few hundred miles, the low fuel light comes on, and it has about 100 more miles left. Much better.

I've been riding with a new bunch of guys since November last year. They of course get between 400-450km out of their bikes (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kwaka). So of course I'm constantly asked " Do you need fuel" as the Griso light appears at around 220km. I fill up 3 times some days.  :weiner:
