Re-Engineering the V11 Shift Spring part 2
« on: November 23, 2019, 04:06:46 PM »
I tried to find a previous post on this subject and just bump it up to the top, but I couldn't find one, sorry if it's a repeat.

A while ago, Scud & Chuck managed to get a batch of new improved Shift Return Springs; designed , made & distributed; great work and many satisfied owners(150?)

There are plans in the works right now over on V11Lemans.com to get a second batch produced https://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?/topic/20201-re-engineering-the-shift-spring/page/41/#comments.

      If you own a six speed V11 or there looks to be one in your future, picking up a couple of these springs might be a good idea;

I feel very lucky that this 2nd batch is being produced, there may not be a 3rd one, just as an fyi, there's a train leaving the station shortly, you may want to be on it. fwiw.

      Tks very much

There is an old saying about counting chickens before they hatch..  I don't particularly want to make them, and Scud apparently is tired of the hassle of shipping them.
I'm still hoping Scud will get another run done. If not, I'll do it, but not in the immediate future, and probably not as inexpensively as they are from a spring manufacturer.

Hey Chuck,     I'm not counting my chickens yet,,, but I am getting my name on the list, just in case the old hen starts laying eggs again lol.

As I mentioned over on V11Lemans, I realize time is precious, very well aware that as they say, "the days may be long, but the decades are short"

If it plays out, great, if not, I'll have a couple of MGCycle's new and improved OEM Guzzi springs by next year,,, it's not like Guzzi would design something faulty destined for premature failure.

I don't think that Scud has been on here for a while, hopefully he jumps back on V11Lemans soon with an answer from the spring shop.

I'll bump this up every now and then, it'll be a long winter, hopefully things fall into place.

It would be after the first of the year before I could get to them. I have more important stuff to do.. like hanging out with the Kid in Wisconsin, then off to SoCal and hanging out with Her Kid, grandkids, and the MZ   for a few weeks.

Everyone wants a spare.

Good insurance in case the "V11 Shift Spring Industry" closes its doors.   Some are afraid the union might encourage a walk out.  Then management will close the plant down in retaliation.  We're done.

Good point. I've been getting $40 a week and 3 beers since the 90s. It's time I negotiated a new contract from the boss.. :thewife:

Haha boys... I've been busy with work and life in general... and riding the Stelvio and the Husky 701 a lot. I can probably run a repeat order by year-end.

But today... the 701 is with me in Morro Bay and needs to blast bad, narrow pavement strewn with rock and mud from recent rain.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving to you Scud; I saw your photos of your ride on the 701, looked like awesome wind therapy.

I have a thing for big singles as well, my DR650 has an exhaust can, FCR pumper carb & lowered gearing, it's a blast to ride, I can only imagine what your Husky is like  :thumb:

I was reading through V11Lemans for info on the roper plate I just got, and realized that not only have you already done this tranny spring caper, but a previous Roper plate distribution, no wonder you're getting tired of boxing and shipping, this guzzi hobby of yours is turning into a full time job

If a run of springs doesn't happen it's not the end of the world, but if you do run another batch know this; I offer you much sincere appreciation and gratitude, because for myself it's not something in my skill set I could do, I can't answer/manage my own mail on my desk, let alone think of managing crap for other people, lol.

I put this post on wg to spread the word, but I'll be following along on V11Lemans.com

Respectfully yours

Kelly

A 701 anywhere around Moro Bay sound like a blast.  Whenever I was passing through, I'd always try to eat breakfast at Dorn's Breakers Cafe. (sorry for the thread drift)

Hey... what's a little thread drift among friends? The 701 is a hoot. My waterproof gear got a rare chance to prove itself.

I got a quote today from the same spring manufacturer as before - which was somewhere East of the Mississippi. I am also checking on a local source, here in San Diego.

Order is placed. If all goes well, I can ship out springs before January 15, 2020.

How to order:

I'd prefer that you send money via PayPal as a friend (to avoid fees) and include your shipping address in the PayPal notes. My PayPal ID is scudder(dot)tim(at)gmail(dot)com.

$12.00 per spring

Please Add:

$8.00 for US Postal Service (USPS) shipping to USA
$12.00 for USPS shipping to Canada
$18.00 for USPS shipping anywhere else

I'm pre-addressing the boxes as the payments come in and I'll do a big shipment when the springs are delivered.

Is this spring a part that you could get one of the dealerships to stock instead of doing this DIY? Maybe MG Cycle Harper's, or another major MG parts dealer. Or perhaps they don't want to deal with the hassle either.

No and yes.

Last I checked, the Guzzi part was still available at lower price.  Unfortunately, it's the same spring that breaks and is a chronic problem particularly with some of the later V11/LeMans bikes.  Chuck and Scud have redesigned the spring with different wire and another coil IIRC and has been stress tested, so it shouldn't fail.  It costs a little more.

For sure a spare spring in hand is required at minimum.

As Lowryter points out there is a new and improved MG spring, but it is also apparently of a failure prone design.

Businesses aim for a few things, making a profit being the ultimate goal; I think you're right it would be a major hassle for very little return, jmho.

Chuck's design on the new spring is based on math and brains and persistence. I (wrongly) assumed that making the spring of thicker wire would make it more durable. Chuck looked up all the specs and found that the stock spring was being over-extended for its thickness. But the specs indicated that a thinner spring can bend a bit more, and the two coils that Chuck designed, along with changing some angles, is a clear improvement. I've ordered a large batch and anticipate having them in stock for a while. I may also attempt to barter some springs for parts with a few suppliers to get the design out there. This is all available in exruciating, step-by-step detail in the afore-mentioned thread over at the V11 board.

Normally, Guzzi engineeering is pretty darn good.. but Luigi dropped the ball when they temporarily promoted him to design.
To the best of my knowledge, none of the redesigned springs have failed..and I truly don't expect them to.
The spring testing machine I built ran one well over 1,000000 shifts, and still looked like new. The Guzzi spring took a set from being overdriven in short order..
