Title: Avon Tires Closing
Post by: 80CX100 on November 24, 2022, 12:06:47 PM
I know that a lot of riders, especially some of the vintage racers with odd sizes, love their Avon tires.

I just learned that they are closing their doors, you may want to snag what you can now and stock up,once they're gone, they're gone.

Avon motorcycle tyres are currently made by Coopers Rubber in the UK. Coopers is a subsidiary of Goodyear. Coopers will no longer be making them after 2023 but I wouldn't be surprised if they continued to be produced somewhere else. Probably in the far East or Asia.

I read somewhere that they would still be producing tires elsewhere. I hope so I really like and use Avon tires. I haven't looked to see if they make tires to fit my V7. I recently put a set on my Bonneville, big improvement over stock.

Yes, my understanding is that they are closing the UK plant and moving manufacturing somewhere else in Europe.  Cost savings and Brexit?

I really like the road riders, but it’s been so hard to get sizes I’ve been going with other brands.

I'd guess that the owners will keep the brand alive because it is such an established brand...however there were quality issues in the past 20 odd years according to some. That might have compromised their popularity.

You'd think with Pound falling that it would be an advantage to continue to manufacture in GB?

The cost of labor is too high.  One of the factors for the EU is full salary with a 4 day/32 hour week being pushed.  Labor unions for it but the rising costs doesn't seem the best idea for manufacturing concerns to turn a profit.  Hence the shift to countries that have lower labor cost with stable governments.

Uk is no longer in the EU so it's exports there are substantially more expensive and slow than previously.Home demand isn't sufficient to support a whole factory and competing against cheaper produces isn't cutting it.

Correct UK not in the EU.  The EU work standards are.  Pricing is still based on cheaper labor for manufacturing.

I've run Avon's off and on for years.  Never had a single quality control issue with any of them.  Can't say the same for Metzler after Pirelli moved assembly to China.  Bought a front 120/70 made in China Metzler that was a full half-inch smaller in circumference than the one I took off.  I'll be sad to see the "Made in England" stamp on the sidewalls of Avon tires go away.

Metzler and sister company have been manufacturing tires on multiple continents for years.

Any continent (er...country) is fine with me except China.

I’m sure you must have a good reason for that?

Obviously you’re aware that the computer/ phone your using to tell the world ( you won’t buy Chinese tires) was mfd in China, along with at least a one third if not more of all goods.
