alternative 98 EV turn signals
« on: October 15, 2022, 06:06:30 AM »
OEM turn signals on 1998 replaced 2 X's in the past 10 or so years.

I'm now looking for folks who have actually replaced with an alternative source.

I'm looking into making replacements with my 3D printer.
Not sure it will work out.

This issue has been discussed number times in the past. Someone else suggested making the rubber part that always deteriorate, maybe out of a more durable material.
Iíve monkey rigged all four of mine on my 2002 Stone.
Please Wayne, by all means, if you have the capability to produce this part of the turn signal, make it happen!

My plan is to make a fairly simple rigid internal metal piece, with a cheap cosmetic plastic cover.
But now that I am retired, I never have time to work on anything like this.

I replaced the turn signal assemblies on a 2003 Cali Aluminum I used to own, with aftermarket ( Emgo, I think) turn signals meant for a Kawasaki Vulcan. The shape was very similar to the Oem Guzzi ones, and they mounted up with one bolt. I just had to make a small aluminum adapter plate with a hole in the center, to mount them up.

Yes, this issue has been discussed numerous times in the past and here we are again.

If anyone creates the STL files I have access to 100+ 3D printers that can produce parts in various materials including SLS/SLS/DLP and a few others....more than willing to help.

Jackal with 3D printed custom standoffs to blend the stalk radius. Metal housings on the directionals...

I do not understand the fuss about this.

My approach -- while admittedly a bit inelegant for the effete  -- has worked just fine.

P.S.  Not sure which pix, above, caused the lapover for this thread, but maybe the mods can reduce those.

Don't think it's from mine, but if so, let me know and I or mods can reduce those.

My 94 cali appears to have the same signals. They feel ďlooseĒ a little bit ( just like my 98ev) and I saw some tiny cracks. I coated the entire black stalk with 2 part clear epoxy to strengthen it and then shot it with a spritz of black rubber undercoating.  Looks great. Maybe it will give me some more time.

My Cal turn signals have started to degrade. I put the front stalks on the back to bring in the turn signals, and shortened the rear stalks to about an inch long and put them on the front. When they crap out completely(not if) I will be looking for an alternative.

It is basically a faulty design.  Not up to the task.  The stalk, although it looks like rubber, is not flexible.  Instead of dampening vibration loads, it merely transfers those loads.

The stalk is held in place by a single Allen screw at one end and a 'hook' of metal at the other which is bent at a 90 degree or "L" angle.  When new, these two components held the stalk firmly in place on the bike.  Over time and road vibration, the 'hook' is not strong enough and gradually begins to bend open.  Thus, that side of the stalk is no longer secure and the full load is transferred to the Allen screw and its threaded receiver.

The cure is to remove the stalk and rap on the 'hook' with enough hammer force to bend it back to its original, 90 degree angle.

Over time it happens again.  Rinse and repeat.  YMMV.

On my 94 California 1100, they rubber held up and the hook bent as you show,
On my 2004 EV, the rubber has turned to dust. Nearly. As in even JB Weld can't patch it up too well.

As mine did, the rubber compound turns to a crumbling solid.
If someone with the capability to use a 3D printer and duplicate the rubber part with a solid nylon material, Iím thinking that would be a permanent fix.
I definitely donít know the facts about the printer thing, Iím just speculating as to an acceptable fix.

3D printing should work nicely.  However, that embedded 90 degree hook is a different story.  :-(  Kudos to anyone who solves both simultaneously.

I donít think the hook is a must. I obtained one that didnít have the hook.
I applied a little epoxy and snugged the Allen head bolt down good and itís held fine for the past year👍

Used those on my Quota. Wiring was a little different but I used the Old ones spliced in.

I'm not sure how I will manage it. But I am not in the game to make a profit. But of course, beer money is always good.   I'm looking into it.

I still have a few glitches to work out.
I think I got a good eagle logo too.

This is the latest version.

First prototype installed.
These have a modified base to let them clear the fairing, which I have wanted for years.
