On the old 850T I've migrated over the decades from Conti to Bridgestone to Shinko -- and Shinko inspires the most confidence. The 850 doesn't make enough power to wear out a rear tire -- I've gotten 10,000 miles -- and I can corner on the footpegs. I don't ride the Mille that aggressively (maybe I'm now too old to ride the 850 that way) and am still on my first set of Shinkos for the bigger bike.

YMMV. My experience with the Podiums was entirely different. Both ends felt like they were ready to let go before even getting close to dragging something. <shrug>

I started my riding journey in Daytona Beach, FL.  We had one curvy route through the Tomoka forest and it wasn't much.

For me the essence of motorcycling was being out in the open.  No insurance cost.  Low maintenance cost.  Riding to the beach and on the beach in swim trunks and surfing sandals.

When I moved to the Tennessee Valley 10 years later I realized I did not know how to ride a motorcycle.  Sure, I knew how to operate a motorcycle, but I didn't know how to ride a motorcycle.

I ride roads now that I recall being scared to death to ride those many years ago.  Of course now the eyes are starting to fail me so I am working towards being more timid on new roads.  Out here in the country it is very common for the road to curve just past the crest of a hill while a driveway continues ahead playing havoc with your vision and response while trying to decide where the road actually goes.

Rode with a group of folks from Eastern TN and those boys know how to ride the tight technical twisties. In all fairness thats all there is around them to ride so you either get good or you'll get hurt trying to keep up.

I'm running the 712 on both the 850T and the Mille. Shinko says the 712 is a wet-weather tire -- I don't know about that. It's a bias-ply, compared to the radial Podium, and I don't know what difference that would make. Different compounds too. In theory tire pressure is critical but I ride in the mountains, up and down between 6000 feet and 12000 feet which means significant pressure changes in the course of a ride. Maybe I'd feel differently about the tire if I were sitting on 100 hp, but on a good day my carbureted bikes produce less than half that at my density altitudes.

I pretty much agree with this 712 review: https://www.revzilla.com/common-tread/shinko-712-tire-review

So those that have run them... whats the difference between the 230, and the 712??  I have a new to me cali stone that has Lazertecs on it, and the rear is all fulled with sidewall cracks..  Front is still good...  so i was think thinking of popping one of the Shinkos on the rear till I need both replaced.  I was wondering about the change from 140/80, to a 130/90... but really I just got the bike, so I have nothing to compare it to.

The Shinko tire discussion came up a number of years ago. Those of us that put on lots of miles like them and some that don't use them somehow hate them, I reported at that time the bad luck I had with Shinko when I was coming back from the beer joint on a freezing winter night. I hit the brakes on an ice covered bridge and went down. I got the bike back up, revved the motor, popped the clutch and went down again. Blame Shinko tires, huh?

It's not because they don't use them that they hate them, it's because they hate them that they don't use them..
I'm confused as to where the bad luck bit was ?

Having used both models , the 712 has a slightly rounder profile and steers a bit quicker , although the 230 isn't bad in that department .

OK, cool thanks.. I enjoy the curving side roads, and running the side roads in the hills so sounds the 712 might be better for me. Seems a bit cheaper also, so even better.   Once I get some miles under the new bike I can revisit tire choice.

While on the subject of tire sizes I'm close to needing a back tire on my 1400. I want to go with the 180 series but keep the same height as close as possible. What size SHINKO would it take?
