What smells good in your area?
« on: December 06, 2018, 06:33:32 PM »
Being out in the environment and not in a cage, riders are very aware of our senses, especially the sense of SMELL. Here in South Central, if you ride in a certain area, you can smell...

Twizlers (red licorice) A manufacturing plant in west Lancaster puts out the sweet smell. I've smelled it 12 miles away!
Kelloggs Corn Flakes -A manufacturing plant in north west Lancaster puts out the fresh corn flake aroma. Makes me want to stop for milk!

In York County, You can smell Potato Chips at various location and Stauffers chocolate cookies at another location.

Any good aromas in your region?

Here in the spring, there are many varieties of night blooming wildflowers.  Honeysuckle, jasmine, more I cannot name. Further south we have the beginning of the Piney Woods. Nice natural scents.

There is a tannery across town. I would call the smell" memorable", "not good"  but it comes nowhere near what it was in the '60s. I'm trying to think of a good smell around here with the dairy and hog producers as well as the pet food factory, I'm coming up short  unless you count the mayfly hatch that smells sort of like fish. Nope, not many good smells from here

Just a 1/4 mile outside the City Limits south of Traverse City is the Saralee Baking Company. A jaunt through town with the right breeze and it's Cherry Pie :)
established as Chef Pierre was bought out by SL about twenty-five years ago.

a ride through the tunnel of trees (maples) at the right time of year and it's sweet maple in the air or a ride along Lake Michigan in a spring rain....has it's own smell...in a very good way

Cilantro and green onions in the fields.
Citrus in bloom.
The Pacific.
When I worked at HFT hq. in Calabasas, the Cheesecake Factory had their test/factory kitchen next door.  That was amazing at times.
Then again, sulfur springs and the oil patch add a little, - balance.

I used to live just east of a KRAFT factory in Springfield, Mo. on Thursday the entire neighborhood smelled like the cheese powder that comes in the blue box of mac & cheese. An invigorating scent indeed.

Three things come to mind. In the early morning and the right time of year are clover fields and fresh cut alfalfa fields. Third was in the industrial district of Denver going by a huge indoor marijuana growing facility, guessing it to be a facility of 50,000+ ft.

I had one and it really was pretty awful. I was always scared it would go bang and I would have to fix it. Too complicated. I sold it to a young Russian guy when you couldn't give them away and I thought I was lucky to get rid of it.A good RGV is a lot more fun.

When I lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas I was a half mile south of the local Campbell Soup Factory.    You could always tell what the soup de jour was.

Around Texas I like the smell of wild onions cut by lawnmowers.   The smell of the ocean as you approach a coast.   A BBQ joint.  And I really like that fetid smell of the bayous—always love crossing over a swamp bridge.

Around Colorado and New Mexico, nothing beats the smell of green chilis being roasted.

When I lived in San Diego, I used to enjoy just taking a leisurely ride through some of the ethnic neighborhoods and smelling the food.  Ethiopian, Somali, Mexican, Vietnamese, a good barbecue place, some others.

Now I live in NH, and fall smells nice, winter smells crisp, maple sugar weekend smells amazing.

I go 20 miles west to Bisbee Arizona for some interesting smells...There are a couple of coffee roasters in downtown old bisbee that put out a wonderful smell. Reminds me of when my Cuban grandmother used to roast coffee beans on the stove in a big cast iron pan, always turning the beans with an old wooden spoon, to roast them evenly.
The smell of creosote bushes in the sonoran desert after a summer rain is like nothing else.
Bisbee is also known as one of the last "Hippie Havens" in the USA. You can sit on a bench in the park in historic downtown  Bisbee, and smell the dank , and somewhat  pleasant odor of cannabis being smoked, on a regular basis.

Here in Lancaster County PA I live in an area mostly populated with Amish.  The most diSTINKt oder in the air is that smell of manure from the local farms. I was out for a ride the other day and my nostrils were getting polluted with this horrible aroma. When I returned home and opened the garage door I was greeted with one of my favorite smells. It was the pleasant aroma of my lovely wife baking Christmas cookies.

The bad news is Wyno, that I had a vindaloo at the Indian restaurant the night before...
I wouldn't lay the entire blame at the (dead) feet of the Kangaroo carcass..!
