Trip to Godzone
« on: February 21, 2019, 12:52:04 PM »
My Wife and I decided to take a short trip back to New Zealand, it's been a while since we visited our families there.

Last time I went for a month so I purchased a bike and re-sold it on leaving but this time it didn't make sense as I was only needing a bike for a week so I hired one from Kiwi Dave (Guzzi Gander)

He had a nice 1200 Sport for me along with a selection of luggage to chose from, I chose just the hard bags.

My Brother Kiwi Kev kindly met me in Auckland riding his new Roamer to ensure that I safely negotiated the wrong side traffic.

We rode down to his place in Taupo where we spent the night then travelled down to Hunterville to visit our older Bro and Sisters via the desert road stopping for a photo op at one of the rest areas.

Imagine our surprise when we got to Hunterville to find we weren't welcome, our older Bro rides an Indian

However he did ply us with with Tui beer and accompanied us on a ride the next day

We returned to Taupo a couple of days later via the Gentle Annie a nice road from Taihape to Napier.
I travelled on back to Auckland where I was able to return the bike to Kiwi Dave unscratched. I highly recommend him to you if you must have a Guzzi to ride in NZ, his bikes are all in excellent shape and he's a pleasure to deal with.

I have done the Gentle Annie once Roy, back i n '67 or '68.  It wasn't sealed then, and we did it in a blizzard.  On the top we couln't even see the road so we sort of aimed at the flattest bits. Someone had driven over it before us, their wheel tracks had frozen and they had been sliding all over the show.  The whole lot made for rather exiting riding!  We were the only ones that made it through that day, even Landrovers were turning back.

It was on that trip where, at night, my mate was chasing a hare along the road at night and rode straight over the edge at a reasonable sort of speed.  Lucky for him and his mate on the back that a tree was growing out of the side of the hill and caught them.  Next stop would have been the river way below.

I didn't realise that Kiwi Dave was Guzzi Gander.

Looks like a good time was had by all.  When I was based in Palmy we drank either Tui or Waikato (when we weren't brewing our own).  Ah, the good 'ole days.

No - I had to google the name, but he doesn't play Rugby!
We did visit a shearing competition, that's pretty big down there, free admittance to watch world class athletes doing 6 sheep in 6 minutes and that's just the heats, the finalists have to do 20
I have no idea how many sheep a pro can shear in a day, I think 4-500

Each shearer is watched closely by a judge, and the young ladies removing the fleece are also part of the competition, they are working hard as well and put on a show as they toss the fleece

There were hundreds of bikes on the road heading for the Burt Munro Challenge at the bottom of the South Island.

In the USA people are doing their taxes now.  So we are getting sheared as well.
