Hey everyone, getting ready to replace the alternator belt on my '09 Norge. Can I just unbolt the oil cooler and let it lay forward or does it have to be removed completely. Also any tips on the job is greatly appreciated. JohnB

I didn’t remove the oil cooler when I changed the belt. Not a difficult job, but I don’t remember the way to make sure the belt is properly adjusted. I’d do a search on here for that description.

I check mine every 20,000 km and replace it at each 90,000 km.
Mine is an easy job, because I have the forks out for the service so I have this view.

You won’t be in as far as this because that’s a cam chain replacement, but you get the idea. The front will be off when it gets home to fit the timing gears, so it will get it’s (slightly overdue) 3rd belt then.
I have always just used the method of twisting the belt 90 deg in situ. to check the adjustment. If you can comfortably do that with your fingers, I call it good.
A long Allen key is useful to reach the adjuster and I think the lock nut is 12 or 13 mm.
It seems easier with the tank off too.

somewhere on here I posted about changing the belt on a Griso 1100, its a bit of a chore but can be done on the side of road if necessary no special tools required.

It’s not easy to get your tools in there. I can’t see it being done without the tank off. Getting to the locking bolt on the left side of generator is a pita but it must be loosened to get the tensioner bolt loose enough to get the belt on. Reaching that tensioner bolt is pretty tricky too. Plan on a couple hours and plenty of swear words to get it done.

Thanks everyone. Everything was going well until I needed to get to the nut on the backside of the alternator to loosen it. I see no other way than to remove the tank and air box,a job I plan on doing later this winter. The belt looks good. Pretty amazing considering it's almost 14 years old. I guess today was a good practice run. :grin: Again thanks everyone.

I bought a new alternator belt but never replaced it. The Norge had 46,000 miles on it when I crashed and totaled it. When I checked the belt before my last trip it was pristine.
