spare loop frame fork top nut to make a puller tool?
« on: March 09, 2015, 11:47:16 PM »
Does anyone have a spare nut for the top of loop frame forks that they would be willing to sell or donate to me? I will be assembling my V700 forks soon and need to make a puller tool to pull them up into the triple tree. I have the long threaded shaft portion of the tool but don't have a plug of the correct size and thread form. If I drill out an old nut I can make the plug that goes into the top of the fork stanchion and save myself 50 bucks buying the factory tool. Thanks.

I just ripped a 2 x 4 down to a cube a little bigger than the I.D. of the for tube about 24" long. Screwed it into the threads and viola a cheap disposable fork tube puller. Or if you can fine a dowel rod at your local hardware store in a diameter thats close it will wor as well.

Greg's offer is much more economical, but for a backup plan

Doesn't have to be a loop frame top bolt.  Any 29X1mm will work- I made one from an abused fork cap  I got off a G5- just cut the hex off so it fits through the triple trees.

I have one.  A few upper threads are lightly buggered but could be cleaned with a Dremel or just ground away.  I think you could turn it into the fork tube about 10X before reaching one of the bad thread crowns.  That would be more than enough for your puller task.  The hex has been ground away mostly.  I could clean it up a lot in my lathe and finish the proper removal of the hex on the top.  Do you have lathe access?  Want this one?
