Since acquiring a BMW R1100r a couple weeks ago in a trade I had been riding that a bit as I checked it out and started going through it. My initial impressions of the R1100r bike have been very positive, and with a Remus exhaust it has some nice soul, which every motorcycle must have!. Meanwhile, the Cali sat. Not unloved, but certainly sitting.
Well - got him out yesterday and quickly was reminded why I love this particular bike. The seating position, the bars, the floorboards, the fairing - all combine to make a relaxed bike that seems to FIT so well now. And of course - it started on the button, and then seemed to run better and better through the ride.
Ended up doing all sorts of roads - two lane, Interstate, and even some very rough barely paved backwoods. I was following my buddy on his GS, and it was just a GREAT ride. The Cali happily soaked it all up in a very relaxed and capable manner. Maybe it is BECAUSE it is a 23 year old bike but just modern enough to be very dependable.
Maybe a new Guzzi would be better in may ways. But this old Cali is just a fantastic machine when you settle into it. And besides - to my eyes, it's beautiful, sensible, and well-built!
Just like your old loyal dog, the house you are comfortable in, your favorite guitar or instrument, your favorite writing instrument. Well - you get the picture - having a Guzzi is just like that when you get back on and have a nice little toot!
Ride safe.
