Unfortunately there are a lot of these guys watching the bike auctions and feel theirs is the next big score.  A nice $ 5-600.00 project.

You could buy all of those you wanted at Mid-Ohio last month for $250 - $500.   $2000 is "just trying it on".

Dumb questions, here, but if a person were considering buying an antique 2 stroke like this - what exactly would you do for parts?  Let me explain:   What if the barrel / cylinder were worn.  I assume it very likely was / is aluminum and prior to the onset of hard-coatings for aluminum, the mfr would have (from stock) sleeved it to cast iron... or maybe chromed it (like our Guzzi's were).  Then, to deal with a worn barrel, you would go to a specialist who would set it on a mill, machine-out the sleeve, interference-fit a new sleeve, bore to size, place the ports back-in where they should be... and you are good to go.  Correct?

Re the piston, if that is worn, are you necessarily dependent on being able to find a new piston or a 0.010" (metric equiv) "over" piston with rings?  Re the conn rod... sleeve the bore of the either / both of the big and small end?  Then fit a roller bearing for ea. from the current, commercially available ones?   What if the piston is NOT available as NOS (New Old Stock)?  Knurl (sp?) the piston to restore size?  I have never heard of this being done.

What about wet clutches.  Are Steels available, or are they available custom machined?  Same re the friction elements.  Can they be restored, re- and re'd?

Crankcase seals?  (Half) flywheels comprising the two halves of the crankshaft?  All "restorable" by a resourceful machinist?

Sorry, I want to buy a 2 stroke single cylinder bike, but seeing as they went out of production so, so long ago, I have to wonder about parts.

TIA for all responses.

There are still several shops throught the lower 48 that do boring, sleeving and precision honing for all the two stroke guy's . Several piston mfgr's have two stroke molds and can produce them very reasonably. Wiseco is the leader in these.  As you say the bearings and other parts can be found at bearing houses . There is also a great aftermarket for European parts suppliers.  I recently bought a top end kit for my 1969 Rotax 372  in Belgium, go figure. Sometimes it just takes more detective work but they're out there.
