Title: The down side of having lots and lots of board members.
Post by: johnr on May 30, 2016, 11:50:16 AM
If you are anything like me you spend far too much time on your computer now.

This is me for sure!
(http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb116/johnr39/computer%20time%202.jpg) (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/johnr39/media/computer%20time%202.jpg.html)

The thing is I have a lot of trouble keeping up with everything and as a rule when I go to General Topics on WG to see if anything interesting is happening I only check out the first page.

Time was when this was fine. You were unlikely to miss much. Now though there are so many posters that a post can slip off the first page within the hour of it's posting.

Not a complaint, just a comment.

No John, only MY posts sink off the page that quick!

Click on the link at the top of the page that says:

Show Unread posts since last visit:

That will bring you 1, sometimes 1.5 pages of new posts to scroll thru rather than having to go post by post...

Apologies if you already knew this...

My gripe is with the newest members and not all.  It's the ones that feel that they need to post combative replies without reading some of the other threads.  It seems that they got treated poorly on other threads and jump in with bad manners.

Tom , sometimes it takes time to learn how to negotiate WG . Some don't have the advantage of already knowing several members here before joining . Mostly it all works out in the end .

No need to explain to me.  I've came here through the MGCL and when Luap got approval from Frank to start the forum.  Even Frankie understood the need to move into the digital age completely.

Just to be clear , there is no affiliation between the two entities , other than many many members belong to both .

Me too John, although, now that we are both retired, does time really matter?

Must admit that I now tend to cover the first two pages, because usually I miss something the first time through.

Soooo... you got there in the end, though if I'm understanding things aright you will still be doing a bit of work.
How does it feel?

Time matters even more when you are retired. You have less of it left.

I'm surprised how fast posts disappear off page one. If I post a question and it isn't answered in one day there is a good chance it will drop out the bottom and be missed by those who don't go past page one.

Soviet Steeds (Ural / Dnepr) chat group breaks their list into categories that make it easier to explore personal interests without getting bogged down in not relevant material.

Social intercourse has its own section for chat and discussion of general interest topics. There are no deep mechanical problems or solutions here.

Mechanical is split into pre computer and post computer bikes. Posting is active but question could hold page 1 for enough time for most of the experts to get a look at it.

There is a separate section for mechanical posts that have long lasting value. Like how to videos and detailed procedures and explanations that should be preserved.

Trips and Ride Reports have their own section. A quick glance here will let you know what events are on the agenda.

As an added bonus if you post to a subject you are automatically notified of subsequent comments until you select otherwise.

If you want to  chat you head up that alley. Want to help others fix their rig  it's off to the repair section. Looking for a trip then it's off to Rides and Reports.

Bottom line, nothing disappears  rapidly and it is easy to track your particular interest.

Don't assume that I'm not greatful for what this board has to offer or what it has already provided to me. I realize this is all the work of volunteers who usually donate their valuable time to the cause. It's just that this is a great pile of stuff and it could be made even greater if it was somewhat self sorting.

Thank You, Ron Cichowski

Ron C , it is easy enough to bump up any thread . Luap designed WG to be a camp fire almost 20 years ago , and it has worked well . On occasion , like in a camp fire discussion , one must be willing to ask a question more than once to get people's attention . No one will be offended .

A bit here and there John, although so far I have not been needed by the old firm.

Some weeks I spend a bit of time helping my son out, gardening for a couple of people and a bit of other stuff as well. Nephew's firm is growing in leaps and bounds so I regularly get help me pleas from him doing a variety of things. Keeps me occupied, but on days like today (where the weather sucks) I can stay indoors by the fire and lurk on WG and generally spend my day. :thumb:

I'll disagree with you on that.  Luap saw a forum as a way to connect the MGNOC membership and newcomers to Moto Guzzi by the internet.  The affiliation is that it's roots are base out of MGNOC.  The two are linked.

If believing that helps get you through the night, then cool.  We all have to believe in something...

You didn't notice the NAR specific oil for sale at CV ???? A special blend of dino and syn that is formulated in a basement in NE Oklahoma by Keebler elves .

 Dusty

The same one used for making hush puppies perhaps?
