If I was a casting guy, what would I want to know? What mold set it came out of - probably not a lot of thoseWhat date it was madeWhat material lot went into it - maybe a priority for aerospace, but probably not a priority for a basic castingIf I worked with the Guzzi group, I'd want to know -Which supplier it came from? Probably only one of those ....Which guy built up the assembly?I find the font difference interesting - could just be the stamp sets used ....Sorry, too much time in the QA mines has affected my mind.
Practices may vary depending on who's involved. I spent five years looking at parts for centrifuges - GIANT centrifuges. The place was ran old school, good old boys and bare minimum of details required. A lot of " that's okay, just go ahead, it will work fine ". And it would, but the print / test doc called for something else.So I documented some of these decisions, required people to sign, and stamped that record number on some giant baskets like for top loading washers, except the basket was the size of a car, and the centrifuge was even bigger. I did not add any prefix such as NMR (nonconforming material report) to the number because any QA boy could spot that and start asking questions - I just wanted a traceability link back to the authorizing party in case the situation ever got ugly. So those numbers may reference something to somebody in a CYA mode, but not be consistent across the whole generation of products or for all operators.EDIT: My cow-orker looked at all the same parts/subasseblys/assemblys and didn't give a damn, so on any given day two versions of the same product could go out the door with/without said markings. He went on to run co-gen turbines and make machined parts because he was bored with looking at stuff and wanted to make stuff - no idea where he wound up. Me? I'm mopping up after an external audit and wondering if I'll be the fall guy for management. Obviously, he was more clever.
