And here I let my gal slip out without commemorating it.

She's off the boat English though technically through London from, well, her Grandmother literally was a "Mary Murphy from County Cork". :boozing:

Well, this is as good a place as any to mention it.

Dad was born and raised (about half his childhood) in Ireland. Came over to NYC as a tweenager.

Growing up he was a stickler for NOT allowing me to wear green on this day, he'd say something to the effect of "you're Irish and you don't have to prove it".

But he changed in his later years and even embraced it (or maybe after one or more of the strokes forgot he ever felt that way).

Lost him Monday night at the age of 81 (he was on hospice at home and as we sat there we swore he might just be stubborn enough to make it to Thursday).

Anyway, Fiona insisted this morning that the whole family wear their matching MAHER shirts:

I daresay he might have gotten a kick out of that.

Have a good one all - raise a glass of Guinness if you get the chance!

Ditto, and let me add that's a fine looking family you have there. I'm sure Dad was very proud.

For everyone else, Happy St. Patrick's Day.
Then again, when I was watching Predator I didn't think two members of its cast would become governors, either. So you never know.

I descend from two families out of Ireland.  Hayes from Thurles, Tipperary and McSweeney from Macroom, Cork.  Did a LOT of work to trace the heritage and have been to literal home soil several times.  Several years ago I filed for and received dual citizenship and an EU passport.  Traveling into and through Europe has become a snap.  Hope to be in Dublin in 10 days to celebrate the centenary of the Easter Rising.  The citizenship and passport are available if you can connect to Irish soil within 3 generations.  My McSweeney grandmother was born there and makes my qualification.

And here's a tip of the hat to FENNELLEY'S Irish Pub in downtown Elkader, Iowa.  Very fine Shepherd's Pie to go with your Guinness the next time you attend an Iowa Guzzi Rally.

Cool stuff.

Kev, sorry about your Dad. Beautiful family. And appreciate the admonition to Guiness, I gave up Beer for lent, and have succeeded in staying on track. But I'm going to see some live music tonight, and a Guiness seems just the ticket. May stick to just a snort of Paddy's but now I feel I've been granted a pass.

I'm all BUT Irish. English and Dutch on Mom's side, Scottish, French and First Nation on my Dad's. Mistaken daily for being Irish. Red beard and all.

Safely enjoy the day, lad's

Kev, truly sorry to hear about your dad.

From one Irishman to another.

BTW - My dad cheated a bit on the Lent thing ....... would give up beer and switch to whiskey.

I'm 1/2 Polish & Welsh, but my wife Judy is Irish.  She's with a German girlfriend tonight celebrating in a Laughlin, Nev. Casino.

I remember seeing the Irish Rovers perform when I lived in Portland, Or. back in the `70's.  Boy they were good!   Tonight I'll be drinking some Rolling Rock beer(green can).  :boozing:

So, I guess it was the late 80's when Dad, Jay, and I decided to spend a night at Tommy Makem's Irish Pavilion in NYC.

They said there would be live music that night, so we asked for a table next to the stage.

Our intention was to recreate a night from my father's youth when he and his brother attempted to empty Ireland of Guinness.

We didn't know that Tommy Makem himself was in the house and planning on performing.

I still have the autographed place mat and the memory of singing along with him at arm's length to Johnson's Motor Car.

I also remember one HELL of a hangover despite my relatively young age and mostly working liver.

Bev and I took the 'vette out to the local beer garten.  Place was near full at 2pm (only a handful last year).  Had a Guinness and we split and corn beef/potato pancake/cabbage dish from the food truck.  Had a late dinner with some BBQ'd grilled small steaks and asparagus.

just got back to check the e-mail.

nice warm day.

weather might get a little cool and wet tomorrow.
