Just for balance , what do you not miss ?
« on: December 10, 2016, 02:55:50 PM »
We are discussing the greatest inventions , so thought we might discuss products that we have bid good riddance to . At the top of my list are 8 track and cassette tapes .

'60-'61 Plymouth had push button transmission, I suspect they were pneumatic.  I do not miss tube type radio or vacuum windshield wipers.

Mopar.  Early seventies, certainly.  Perhaps earlier, too.  A/C, heater, ventilation controls--all with a zillion skinny air tubes behind the dash.  Shudder...

I'm not sure; but, didn't the old push-buttons on the Chrysler automatics also use pneumatic control?

edit: looks like pyoungbl (above) confirms the old push-button automatic controls.  Ghastly things.  What's wrong with a simple lever?

Pretty sure they were used thru the 1960's also , maybe even in the late '50s .

I don't miss the ignition switch on Guzzi being below the seat on the left side.  It's a short run for the wires to the battery; that's the only thing good to say about it.

Party lines. Made good neighbors go  :thewife:

Carburetors (I mean, Daimler created them using a perfume bottle!). I expect this comment to go  :boxing:

Drum brakes (with very limited exceptions). These things were originally wooden blocks on Conestogas, and even in the lat 60s didn't work much better!

I actually like cassette tapes, and still have a pro dual-deck cassette unit and a ReVox A77 reel-to-reel. I also like tube amplifiers (but not tube TVs or radios).

Motorcycle related- I've got to say kick starters.  Fine if you still have decent knees but at my age I'm happy they are gone.  I still have one kick start only bike in the garage and it cost me a trip to the orthopedic surgeon.

Other items- Telephone party lines, they were awful and they really weren't necessary.  Almost everyone would have gladly paid for a private line but the telephone companies thought it was best if you had to wait, for years!

I don't miss the old telephone party line. I don't miss the way autos from the 50's and 60's handled. I don't miss living in old base housing with no insulation and one electrical outlet per room. I don't miss lighting off the old Loran alpha set about an hour before scheduled underway time so as to allow the tubes to warm up. That thing was huge. No lat/long readouts either. Just an o-scope screen and you matched the waves, read numbers and interpolated on the chart. Kinda fun in a hurricane at 0200. Actually, I do miss that.

Funny, I always liked them and still occasionally play.

Vulcanising patches. I still relate the smell to being in trouble with a flat away from home. Oh and also, single compound tyres.

Yeah those 8 tracks were so touchy on their tape tension.  Cassettes were much better, except then you lost the high freq. sounds.  Now my ears miss the high freq. sounds.

Points.  Don't mind carbs, but I always felt like setting points was something regularly needed at always the worst time. Love me my electronic ignitions!
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!
