Who's your hero's?
« on: December 09, 2021, 07:38:54 AM »
Kind of like the can only have one MC topic, hard to have just one for some. For me two are on the top of the list.
My dad, and this guy, Both fearless and they taught me that while avoiding risks may prolong your life , it will never replace the experiences in life that only assuming risks provide.

We were at Bike week many years ago, when I said, "that's Evel Knievel." I didn't have my camera to take the picture of him with his arm around Dorcia.. (well, he *was* a dawg until his dying day..)

Most are aviation related. The first that came to mind was Steve Wittman, but there are others..

Well, Dad of course. WWII vet, purple heart recipient, hard worker, great parent, and devout Christian.

AND, Jay Springsteen, winner of three consecutive A.M.A. Grand National Championships in 1976, 1977, and 1978. He accumulated 43 Grand National Championship dirt track victories during a career that spanned almost 30 years and a all around nice guy.

Professionally, i'd say Anthony Bourdain, Jose Andres, Danny Meyer, and Daniel Humm. All for very different reasons.

In life, my Dad, my uncle Rick, and my maternal Grandparents would be the top picks.

On the ole Guzzi board It's gotta be a tie between Chuck Stottlemyer and Dave Swanson! Two really kind guys who know their stuff, have the best toys, and are devoted family men!

My dad.  Died when I was in 2nd grade when he was 41 years young of cancer.  He was a World War II veteran and was in the battle of the bulge under General George S. Patton.  I have a letter of recognition from Patton to my dad.  That in my opinion is pretty awesome.  R.I.P. Keith Lester Olson!

Of whom I have known personally one was my primary glider flight instructor. He spent countless hours in the rear cramped, hot cockpit training us not to kill him or ourselves, did it in a though but easy going manner. Usually spent all day Saturday and Sunday training and totally volunteer at that. He had also served in the AF as a F-102 and F-106 pilot back in the day when it was a lot more work and things not as reliable as now.
Also as already mentioned, Jimmy Carter.

Muhammad Ali, stood up for what he believed in no matter the consequences. Sergeant Mitchner (sp?)in basic training, didn't want any of his troops to be killed or wounded in Nam for lack of training. He treated us with respect and professionalism but worked us to near death, lol. Albert Einstein for looking outside the box further than anyone could imagine. My dad of course, very smart, built our first tv from scratch with parts and pieces scrounged from all over including probably Uncle Sam.

To be honest, is this a Guzzi related subject? Based on this is a international forum is it just a matter of time before someone not see a solider etc. as a hero and the heat is on……

Other than my uncles and my dad, a fella by the name of James B Tatum. He was a friend and mentor to me for many years. Summarization: Korean War veteran, 2 purple hearts and Bronze star with valor for heroic action. Spent almost 500 days in a hospital recovering from wounds sustained in battle. Entrepreneur and business owner. College Founder, community servant leader.

Recently, I was able to get him inducted into the Missouri Veterans Hall of Fame. A true honor for me to be part of that. He will be a member of this Hall of Fame until the end of time and his plaque is on display in the Capitol of Missouri along with others in the Hall, including President Harry S Truman.

We recently held a Veterans Day Celebration in his hometown of Pineville Missouri, honoring all veterans and spotlighting his induction.

Here is the news article on that: https://www.fourstateshomepage.com/news/local-news/mcdonald-county-celebrates-veterans-one-locals-induction-into-missouri-veterans-hall-of-fame/

For those with Facebook, here's the entire ceremony where you'll see me present his widow with the award:  https://www.facebook.com/PinevilleMO/videos/1071844886902078

Pete Roper for his education of the Guzzi community especially regarding the failure of flat tappets in the 4 valve per cylinder (8V?) motors. And his tutorials on how to change them.  :thumb:

I hope he doesn’t read this..
I saw a side of him that I’ll not forget, when my Norge lunched it’s bevelbox. He was away in Townsville at that point, but told me over the ‘phone..

“Just go to Michael’s shop and take a (near) new one off the shelf...
That’ll get you (900 km) home and leave the ****’ed one with us...”
No charge.

On the ‘phone to him yesterday, he’s doing a refresh on my Norge after Mandello 2022 for it’s 220,000 k milestone.
Hero..? Dunno, but for the purposes of this post, I take your point as valid.

Hero, as it is used today, has been watered down and applied to too many for just doing their job.

That's ok , you don't have to be super man to be somebody's personal hero. Too many to list, but for me , anyone who makes someone else day a little brighter is a hero. Heroic acts can seem very small to some I guess,  but still guessing you have a few  too my friend.

So, Bad Chad, are you saying that the people who have put their lives on the line for the betterment of others unselfishly are just "doing their job?" I beg to differ. If you were in say......and accident, or being threatened by some of the various nut jobs we have in our society or seriously inquired will you call 911 and ask for someone to come to your aid just "do their job" Or would you rather have someone go above and beyond and possibly be heroic?

I'm a firm believer the real heroes in our midst should be held to a higher esteem and given our full respect. Thank you veterans, military personnel, police, firefighters and first responders.

Let me pile on. Several years ago, Pete "sold" me the Mighty Scura. One of the denizens of another forum's son was fighting for his life. Pete told me to just send the boy's dad a check for the amount..
