'16 and Up V7 Speedo/Tach Conversion For a Stone?
« on: June 05, 2022, 05:29:20 PM »
Hopefully this is a simple question.

Can a (IIRR) '19 V7 Stone with the single speedo get a DIRECT swap to let's say a '16ish Speedo/Tach?

The wires to the dash I think are the same. From what I learned, it may or may not be plug and play. Or, does the ECU or the like need some fiddling?

So what do you think?

I feel like I read somewhere that it was like $2000 worth of parts (and a whole bunch of work) to replace a Stone dash with a Special dash because it needed a whole new wiring harness

That is what I was wondering about. I wold have thought Guzzi just used the same harness for all the models and just plugged in what was needed.

Thanks,
Tom

Same. It's disappointing to me that it's not easy to do. When I started looking at Moto Guzzis, the V7 Special was the one that initially caught my eye, in part because of the tach, but I ultimately decided the Stone made the most sense for me. I really liked having a tach on the Honda Nighthawk 750 that I had for a few months, and the off-center speedo on the Stone always messes with me...but I'm not sure I'd like the angle/position of it with the drop bracket that GTM sells (even though I initially thought I wanted one)

Old ways of Guzzi are gone, now you must pay Piaggio. This is what they want. Just put on aftermarket or buy a different V7. No more swapping things from model to another.
Get used to it or call the 800# and bitch at them. I got what I enjoy and it's nothing new.

Speaking on behalf of a few harmless eccentrics who own V7 Stone models I wonder exactly why anyone needs a tach on these bikes seeing as they have a rev-limiter and, on newer models, an adjustable shift light?

If I was Tom I'd get a loom from one of Marks take off bikes. I changed a loom on a Griso a few years ago, 4hrs & running perfect, just like factory. You have to do it just like factory to have those results.

The fact that they didn't make the RPMs one of the display options is pretty dumb.  The shift light does meet my needs when cruising around.

my special has the dual clocks, and for the life of me, I don't know what it brings to the table.  personally I shift by ear,  and knowing the 70MPH is 4K revs means little to me..
and with a USB cable you can get RPM to display on the smart phone.

just my 2c

For me it is not about upshifting, but about cruising RPMs, and knowing what they are so I don't accidentally bog the engine accelerating when I should have downshifted first.  Easy to just accelerate and decelerate, or to keep the revs up when riding spiritedly, but eking out the best fuel economy is easier with a tach.

I was not asking to do this on one of my bikes. Don't own a V7.

I had been asked if it could be a direst swap. I did not know. I just thought that Guzzi would have used the same wiring harness between the bikes and just hooked up the connections as needed for the various models.

It's sorta sounding like it can be done, provided you use the wiring harness from the bike with a speedo/tach. But then....Is the ECU (box itself or the programing) and all other connectors the same?

Mainly, I was just curious if it would be a direct swap. Apparently not.

Thank you for your insights!!!

I very much doubt the main wiring harness is different ..That would be an expense the factory would try to avoid. A sub harness to the dash is more likely.
On the big block bikes like EV vs Jackal the same main harness was used with different sub harness to the instruments.
Someone would have to show two different part numbers on the wiring harness for me to believe they are different.

Just so you know, I looked it up. Main loom on Special(2clocks) Part# 2D000209 & on Stone(1 clock) Loom Part# 2D000332 .  Sub harnesses seem to be same numbers. this is for 17-19 V7III on both models.
Don't believe, then look it up.

Edit:   Special $650  Stone $735

Is the wireless MIA an option to display RPM etc with your smartphone? Probably about $500 (I think) with mounting kit.

Yes it is, but clumsy and inelegant, like a blaster vs a light saber...
