Title: V7Sport out of dormancy
Post by: Klinkhammer on May 05, 2020, 02:29:51 PM
So, first post!
Had Vespas for many years (GS150, GS160, Rally 200, PX 200) but ten years ago I bought this V7 Sport and slowly my interest has shifted to Guzzi. Today all Vespas are sold and I currently have three Moto Guzzi; the 1972 V7 Sport, an 850T endurance-racer-look-a-like and a Le Mans III 998 cc Agostini.

I bought the Sport with a few mods as you can see in the picture. PHF 32`s, Stucchi exhaust and Marzocchi rear shocks. After some fiddling with jetting it ran quite well. However it has now been sitting for some time because of a leaking rear seal and I finally decided to restore the engine. The gearbox was restored a few years back by Rolf Halvorsen and the rest of the bike is in decent shape.

Got the engine out and disassembled. All exterior engine parts vapor blasted. The crank was worn quite bad and needed to go to 2nd undersize for the con rods but only first undersize on the front and rear bearings. New set of cylinders and pistons. Sent the flywheel to HMB in Germany for lightening. I have bought parts for closer to 10.000 € from them the last 6-7 years and have nothing but good experience!

While the engine was out I started to look at the frame and realized how bad the paint was. Some PO had first nickle-plated the lower frame rails and the swing arm and later painted it black but the paint is coming off of it. So finally I decided to do the frame also…

Today I delivered the frame, and other assorted parts, to the blaster. Expect it to be done in a week. To be continued...

Nice V7 Sport!  We all love a good V7 Sport story!  It sounds like you are on the right path all the way around!  I will be watching for your updates.

My first venture into Guzzidom was the V7 Sport.  I thought back then it would be the only Guzzi model I would ever desire to own.

My 73 when I got it.

Very elegant Sport, Dave!
That Burgundy red looks really good! Can’t decide between that and the green/lime. I also think tank decals looks a lot better than badges. The paint job will have to wait thou.

My big color choice was for the frame.  Since I was repainting the frame (and tins) I had the choice of silver.  During the time frame my Sport was produced there was silver framed bikes.

This bike belongs to a local Guzzi enthusiast.

In the end I went with the factory issued colors for my bike.

Received the Gilardonis from HMB some weeks back. Well packaged
The casting is very rough and the difference to the rest off the engine is way to big -I need to vapor blast them.

I've probably bought at least 20 sets of Gilardonis over the years and have never seen a set look that bad. Usually they're lighter in color than the heads even after the heads are cleaned and media blasted.

I like your V7 Sport a lot, especially the red.  It's closer than most to the color the previous owner of mine painted it back in 1979.  He had also painted the frame a similar red, but it didn't match the bodywork.  So in 98(?) I had some argent paint mixed to match an NOS Dellorto SS1 in my spares to use on my frame.  Not original but I like it a lot.

It's fun to hear about your Vespas.  Over the years, I've also had a 57 GS150, a 78 P200e and 2 older round Bajaj Chetak scooters plus others.  They're all gone, too.

I'll be watching your thread.

As most (all?) vendors seem to be out of V7 Sport cylinders at this time I can only guess that this pair has been sitting on the shelf because of the rouge cast... It is time for Gilardoni to maka a new batch.
Hopefully my pair will look better after vapor blasting!

The Vespa is truly a genius design from both a technical and esthetic point of view, and the GS 150 is the pinnacle of esthetics.

I have followed your Corsa thread with much interest. Deeply impressed!!
I actually built a "Vespa GS 150 Corsa" loosely based on the Sei Giorni. I'll see if I can find a picture...

I would consider yourself very lucky to have those Gliardonis.  There can't be many at all on sellers shelves anywhere in the world.  All of the usual suspects in the USA are out I believe.

Some progress yesterday.
Picked up the frame and assorted parts from the blaster. Cleaned it out and sent it of to paint.
Also installed cam, rank and conrods.

Mine had black frame as all (I believe) V7 Sport that came to Sweden.

Tuesday again. My day of work and time for some quality time in the garage.

The engine is slowly coming together. Lubrication and ventilation systems, cam drive, sump and flywheel installed.
Still waiting for my new cylinders to be vapor blasted.
Got new stainless allen screws for the timing chest and valve covers. Also received the gasket kits from Eurocarb for the carburetors.

The frame came back from the painters. Didn’t go full gloss but 60% and it looks really good. I don’t know what its like in the rest of the world but in Sweden all paint shops I have previously dealt with have an alternative view of time -one week always turns into five or twelve or whatever. Really nice that this shop actually delivered after the promised week!

Engine bottom completed, I'm just waiting for the heads.
Got the cylinders vapor blasted and they turned out really nice. Buttoned up the engine chest, got the clutch in, flywheel etc.

As you can see I'm going for Sachse ignition (this is the fourth bike I'm installing Sachse), this time with the integrated rectifier.
https://www.elektronik-sachse.de/shopsystem-3/en/ignition-rectifier-regulator-combination-pureg.html
The set up with Sachse is super simple. Put the engine in TDC, adjust a disc at the alternator. Done! I've driven to Italy (from Sweden) twice without any problems whatsoever.

Thank you!
Its a really nice tool. The only thing it can’t do is the nut on the cam sprocket...

It has been a couple of weeks with less activity regarding the Sport. There has been some other Guzzi associated activities thou, the Le Mans III is going to be featured in an article in a bike mag. We had a cleaning day in the garage and I finally got my Guzzi sign up on the wall. Also, the sailboat needed some attention.

The cylinder heads came back a couple of weeks ago. Re-sleeved guides and a very moderate porting job, more like a blueprinting. Had to wait for shims to get the valve springs up to spec.
Today I got the heads back on and torqued up.

Productive hours in the garage yesterday and today!
Got the swingarm, fork, rear and front wheel mounted. Foot and hand controls also. Since most of it was in good working order its basically just to reassemble everything.
Upgrading some of the hardware to stainless.
Electrics coming up... :

So, finally back in the garage after summer vacation. It has been quite nice despite the current state of affairs. Spent a couple of weeks in my summer home, sailing, fishing and most of all relaxing.
Since my last post I have hooked up and adjusted brakes. Got the exhaust mounted. The carburetors (PHF 32) renovated and mounted.
Also electrics… most of it is done, only a few loose ends. I got a Sachse ignition with integrated rectifier and regulator. Upgraded the stator to the 20 amp model.
A few more hours and I will be able to crank it for the first time in a couple of years.

And it is running again!!
Cranked it without plugs for 5 seconds to get oil pressure, installed plugs and it fired up on second revolution!
Trying to sort jetting out, right now K4 needle in second slot, idle jet 50, main jet 128. Still slight hesitation of idle.
The torque weakness below 4000 is very obvious, especially since I lately only have ridden my LM3 tuned by Agostini. However, the Sport is so much nicer to ride in town. The LM 3 is a beast.

A good while since last post! And here is the reason.
Took the bike out for a ride and put it back on the lift when I came back to the garage. The plan was to re-tourqe the heads the next day. Next morning a friend sent me this picture.

(https://i.ibb.co/3Yd6sSt/l-ckan.jpg) (https://ibb.co/3Yd6sSt)

Realizing it was gearbox oil (the only major part that was previously restored) I just had to walk away from the bike for a while…

During the holidays I felt that inspiration came back so I got back to it. Crabbed the frame and got the gearbox out. Luckily it was not the input shaft seal but the clutch pushrod seal that leaked.
I replaced them with o-rings. Not much oil on the clutch so I left it in, just hoping I won’t have to regret that decision….
Got the gearbox and swing back on yesterday.

Sold new in Sweden by swedish importer ”Grahns”.
Quite a few owners before I bought it in 2009.
A previous owner contacted me and sent som pictures (not the best quality thou).
A nice full fairing, cool graphics. discs in front and original (I think) rear dampers.
Same Stucchi exhaust that is still on the bike, and you can see the nickel-plated lower frame rails.

I sent the fly wheel to HMB Guzzi. This is the second engine I built with lightened fly wheel. Makes for a much nicer engine characteristic in my view.

Carbon fibre tank for V7 through to Le Mans.  Had it made by a bloke who mainly does Laverda gear.  Mould taken off a V7 Sport.  With taps and fuel cap, it comes in at about a kilogram (2.3 pounds).  Flawless work, sorry about the reflections.

Ok. So now is everything's in good working order. Thinking of repainting the bike (not original paint as it is anyway).
I have searched the internet but it seems to be a bit unclear; Who can tell me about the color codes for the lime green color?

I have seen variations on the V7 sport green. Some more olive, some more lime , some almost gold.

There's a local guy who does restorations, and he just finished a sport in black. I think black is my favorite color for a V7sport.

Your best bet is probably to find a painter who has already painted a bike lime green. I didn't have the original colour either but went with the V11 green which 'should' be the same.

I bought this in a spray can which has the base and green clear in seperate cans. The results are on my V7 conversion build log.
https://www.caferacernet.nl/product/motoguzzi-v11-sport-green/

Stein-dinse also used to sell a v7 green in spray can, but don't know how that colour looks (more/less gold)

Here's a link to a v11lemans member explaining how to duplicate the colour.
https://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?/topic/17183-how-to-color-match-the-guzzi-lime-green/

The relevant text;
"All materials are from House Of Kolor and I ordered them from KolorHouse dot com

(1) Silver Metallic base. (FBC-02) Qt size is plenty enough to do several bikes.

(2) "ORGANIC GREEN" INTENSIFIER KANDY (KK-09). I ordered a 2oz bottle. Believe me you will only need about 4 drops!

(3) "LIME GOLD" INTENSIFIER KANDY (KK-02). I ordered a 1/2pt or 8oz bottle. I used about 1/2 of it.

(4) Intercoat Clear (SG-100)it's a clear basecoat. I ordered a qt.

OK now buy an empty qt paint can and pour 1/2 of the intercoat clear base. Now pour 1/2 of the Lime Gold candy into the 1/2qt of the clear base and start sturring in the Organic Green A DROP AT A TIME until the color appears to match. (I used one of my side covers beside to refference). It only took about 4-5 drops of green to get there!! Then thin with basecoat reducer until the qt can is full.

Lay the silver first, let dry. Then lay 3-4 coats of the kandy base you made up letting tack between coats (10-15min). Compare to the bike pannels until you have achieved the proper kandy color. Finally clear over with an automotive urethane clear and you're done! I even did a blend on a side cover (area that was rubbed bad) and the blend turned out about 98% match. (If anyone knows about blend matching, that can't get any better!)"

It can be difficult to find the green paint. So too the red, there are plenty of variations of that also. Mine was done in the '90's and the painter made the decals for me, they were unobtainable at the time. His name was Bob Brookland, he went on to paint the Brittens.

I see yours is LH gear change, unusual for 1972,  has it been converted?
Mine is the one with the fairing.

To my knowledge, all V7 Sport that was imported to Sweden had left hand gear change.

Thank you. I went to a lot of trouble to replicate the Telaio Rosso paint. You will see that mine has black tank decals and black stands, the other bike has the "standard" decals used on all the other colours with decals, and red stands. That doesnt look right to me.
My second choice was the marone red with silver frame, I think they look great.
I'm guessing that you will leave your frame black since it was recently painted?
Mine has returned to being dormant. I rode it to the 100th Anniversary rally we had here recently, then put it away. It has a crack in the lightweight  tube frame. From comments I find here on this forum, it seems that all Sports had the T45 tube frames & it is common for high mileage examples to crack. Mine has 120,000 miles, 100,000 of them are mine.
The 750S is a "replica", built around genuine S cases with 90% genuine Sport & S parts. Sadly, he had to use a T frame. He is still looking for a Sport or S frame. This was at the 100th Anniversary.

Dealing with these setbacks is part of the game unfortunately.  I hope all goes smooth from here on out!

I thought Guzzi used Chrome moly, not T45.  Those thin tubed frames ( Telio Rosso ) were only the very first bikes.

I bought some BS4 T45 to repair my Sidlow frame, and had to have it shipped to the US. Great material !

No, that is another of the mistaken "folklore" stories. There is a tendency for the American driven press to use the expression "chrome molly" because it is an American material and it becomes common international vernacular and that's what we hear and believe.

Along with the "150 Telaio Rosso frames were thin walled tube". Per my previous post, there is credible information that can be found on this forum, with a bit of searching, which indicates that all Sport frames are thin walled. I measured the tail ends of my frame tubes where they are crushed together, and compared them with my T, Convert & LM frames, definitely thinner than the touring frames & mine is dated Dec 72, for 73 market, well outside the "150 Telaio Rosso" range.
To further back this up; I'm guessing you imported T45 because your local 4130 tube is made in inch sizes which dont match your metric T45 frame sizes?
One of my sons, who makes rally car roll cages, brought it to my attention that that 4130 is in inches, T45 is millimeter sizes.

Out of curiosity, roughly how much was your restoration. I will hopefully begin a restoration on a V7 soon.  I need to know if sending my wife for a trip to the spa will suffice, or if i am sending her on a Caribbean trip before telling her how much $ i am going to spend on restoring the bike.

My step dad owns a 1972 V7 Sport, bought it new.  Hes all ready said that when he passes away, It will become mine. Unfortunately / fortunately, it doesnt look like hes going anywhere soon.

Sadly the bike has been parked for 15 years, It was running great when he last used it. But now it definitely need some love.   I am trying to sweet talk him into giving it to me now.  I plan on doing a full restoration. Paint, chrome, Motor.... The works.  Getting raid of the honda fairing he installed way back when is at the top of my list.

Also, any leads on where I can get a light bucket and turn signal for the bike? That would be greatly appreciated. After nearly 50 years.... His are long gone.

I restored mine 30 years ago, my costs are not relevant. However, your chrome costs are likely to exceed the cost of sending your wife for a spa!
That is a solid, unmolested example, restoration will be relatively easy. Do not throw away those rear shocks, they are rebuildable, have the shock rebuilder set them to full hard damping while he has the springs off. Also, warn the plater if you send the bottom spring collars for replating, that they are zinc, use the correct stripper or he will dissolve them!
Start now, some parts are getting hard to find, where on here did I see a reference to buying V7Sport Gilardoni barrel kits, they are hard to find right now, & you will need a set, the chrome will be knackered. The Silentium mufflers will probably be unchromable, start looking for new ones, or Lafranconis while they are still around.
The headlight bucket is same as a Benelli 650 Tornado, start looking.  They turn up on fleabay, be prepared to send your wife for another spa!
It looks like 2 of the indicators are still attached to the Craven pannier rack. They were Lucas.
What is the frame number of that one? Mine came from Canada in 1976, it is VK32198. That one, I'm guessing, is 1973, LH change, badges on tank? I would love to know if the LH change is 1 up, or 1 down? Did the factory change the selector drum, or did they just fit the LH levers and linkages?
Before rushing stuff off to the paint shop, try polishing it. It doesn't look too bad. Try to keep it as original as possible. Even the seat looks OK from the outside. Carefully peel off the foam, sand blast the steel pan, it might be reclaimable. I wouldn't glass bead the alloy either, use prunis, walnut shell, followed by scrubbing with hot water, laundry powder & scotchbrite, it will look like new, not like it's been "restored" Ciao.

As Roy posted, the Benelli 650S bucket and rim are the same, as are those for the (US) Morini 3 1/2. The Benelli bucket is painted, not chromed though. Showing as available at https://www.benelliparts.de/ . I just bought one needing rechroming - not inexpensive.

As far as signals - the US V7 Sport used Lucas signals. Jim Carey (cunuck750 here) sent me a bunch of "tabs" and I made my own mounting stems for the front, then had them chromed. https://flic.kr/p/2i8bxVH . The rear mounting brackets are just a zig-zag piece of flat steel, reproductions are available from MG Cycle. https://flic.kr/p/2i9Gn5p . New Lucas signals (genuine or reproduction) mount differently than the originals, so I tapped the plastic bodies to 7/16"-14 as original, drilled studs hollow and used s.s. nuts and washers.

V7 Sport Gilardoni cylinder kits are currently available, so it might be a good idea to grab a pair soon.

I made up a batch of reproduction front and rear V7 Sport signal mounts / stalks, I have extra water jet cut tear drop tabs that you need to weld a hollow tube stem to for the front and tap it for the light stub, also have water jet cut rear tabs the you fold in a vise, if you can use the tabs pm me and I will mail you some

I imported the T45 because that is what Andy used and didn't want to mix materials. I did a lot of reading. My tubing came from GB and came in 1" or 25.4mm and slightly smaller diameter than what was existing and snugly slides in with a little sanding. Didn't se any in metric sizes.

It makes perfect sense that Guzzi would use a euro spec material instead of chrome moly.

Tonight, I was able to talk go my step dad into giving me his bike, making me the second owner. All it took is a promise to let him ride it first once the restoration is completed....  A very fair trade.
Its likely going to be a next year project. frame number 33532

Excellent!  Be sure to start a build thread here.  We will be around to help out.  It will be a very worthy project!  Fully deserving of bucket loads of cash!!

I restored mine 20 years ago.

Congrats!!
Regarding my own bike, I have decided to sell it. The thought has matured for the last 6 months. I have limited space (only room for 4 bikes) and this is the one that (currently) evokes least emotions. I also got bit by the Convert-bug and is planning the next project.
