Interesting Documentaries Solicited - NGC
« on: September 21, 2019, 08:49:42 PM »
Guessing that quite a few of the folks on here enjoy a good documentary...thoug ht I'd start a thread to get some inputs on some interesting choices:

I'll start out with two:

Unbranded - (for Horse lovers and Wildlife lovers...you'll enjoy this one, riding Wild Mustangs from Mexico to Canada thru some of the most beautiful scenery we like to ride thru on motorcycles (BDR's mostly)

The River & The Wall - done by the same lead as Unbranded, this is a story about exploring the distance from El Paso to the Gulf...travelling on foot, mustangs, canoeing...

What other interesting ones have you seen?

Glad you asked, from Netflix on DVD..

1, Rivers and Tides, about Artist Andy Goldsworthy.. non permanent Art..

F for Fake, by Orson Wells.

Art and Craft...
Mark Landis has been called one of the most prolific art forgers in US history. Posing as a philanthropic donor, and most recently as a Jesuit priest, Landis has given away hundreds of works over the years to a staggering list of institutions.

Desperate Man Blues..
Bussard has amassed more than 25,000 records. Bonus features include rare footage of John Lee Hooker performing "Never Get Out of These Blues Alive" and Son House with "Death Letter Blues."

Beware of Mr. Baker,   Ginger Baker, man the guy was a jerk..

When I was growing up on Sunday afternoons, there was a Walter Cronkite weekly documentary called "20TH Century".   It was a compilation of old CBS newsreels and archive films narrated in historical perspective:  The Depression,  The World Wars, The Cold War, The Marshall Plan, Korea, it was pretty educational certainly with an American slant but not propaganda.

The Stone River by Giovanni Donfrancesco is viewable or can be purchased on Vimeo.

https://vimeo.com/ondemand/stoneeng/85095551

This is a documentary about the world of granite & granite work in Barre VT.  It is the world that I come from, just a few miles from my boyhood home and very special to me.  The trailer opens with Master Sculptor Giuliano Cecchinelli (one of my Masters, quoted below in my signature) at Hope cemetery.  Then it shows my Master Carver cousin Andy Hebert (can only see his apron, which I made for him) at Rock of Ages pitching the corner of a base.  Then it cuts to my Formal Master Sculptor Gary Saasi in his studio, Celestial Memorial Sculpture Studio, carving just a few feet from where he apprenticed me on the next bankers. Then it shows an in-law & fellow carver running his hand machine & drinking a beer.  Lots to see.

Even if you don't watch the whole movie, watch the trailer on this link.  It says it all about our world of stone and why I am the way I am.  My family has cut granite in Barre and now beyond continuously since 1891.

Snowflakes should be watching the Ken Burns series so they wouldn't think they have it so tough.

There is a fantastic multipart documentary series on Formula 1 on Netflix.  Simply amazing and nothing to do with the diva drivers.
They also have a lovely one on both Jim Clark and Bruce McClaren.

I'll watch the granite one soon.  Sounds interesting.

Giovanni spent a lot of time with Gary & at the studio while he was in town shooting video across the seasons.  They connected and Gary helped him meet many of the relevant people in Barre, at least according to Gary...

Things have changed a lot in the last 20 years and even more in the last few since that movie was done.  Hard to see so much simply disappearing so fast.   Tariffs & trade war stuff related to us needed to happen decades ago, but we were specifically told that the domestic granite industry was too small a part of the GDP to be relevant to govt action in such matters.   Now, almost everything except the basic work is essentially gone.  We understand and accept the risks of the work, but fighting China & India is different.

I'm very appreciative that he made this movie.  Please watch and enjoy.

There's usually something good on PBS and you can watch them for free online for a little while before they put up the paywall.

I watch a lot of documentaries, but this one sticks with me.

Huge mines, immense factories in China, mountain ranges of electronics waste, ship breaking in India.

The scale of industrial processes seldom seen.
