NGC 2019 Woodenboat Show
« on: June 29, 2019, 09:21:36 PM »
For those of you who might be interested in wooden boats or just cool craftsmanship, here are some shots of the show in Mystic. I'm a judge in the concourse.

The Charles Morgan is a restored whaler and the centerpiece of Mystic Seaport, the host for the show

One of my favorites- a turn of the century Fay & Bowen launch:

engine controls were much simpler then. Check out the gauge package!

The engien was cast and built by Fay and Bowen. 181 cubic inches and a whopping 27hp.

Don't need much horsepower with that sleek displacement hull. It's a beauty. We have a wooden boat festival in nearby Madisonville, LA. No grand tall ships, but gorgeous excursion boats, sloops, and Lake Skiffs. The highlight of the fest is the boat-building competition. Lake skiffs and pirogues are the most common entries. You'd be surprised what can be done in just a few days...

Modern fiberglass boats are just so boring and unattractive , wooden boats are interesting and beautiful .

Here's one for the gearheads in the audience- a 1926 Wolverine "semi diesel". 75 hp at 325rpm.  ...that's not a typo. 2,180ft. lbs torque- so they are very big ponies. this beast weighs in at a svelte 5 tons

This work in progress is designed from an 1899 photo of a racing catboat

That's a beautiful hull shape.  But, from the photo, it can't be a 'catboat' with a forestay sail.

Yes, a great show every year! As the town's building inspector I was there with the fire marshal on Thursday to bless the tents and the temporary electrical systems that they set up for the show. The Fay and Bowen boat wasn't there yet but I've seen her before. The Morgan is a jewel for sure. I've seen her under sail which is a sight in itself.
The Antique and Classic Boat Rendezvous is next in July. My vessel is old enough to be in the show and I've attended in previous years but won't be there this year.
Jon, if you like engines, the Marine Engine Show is in August. They trot out some of their real treasures and run them. The Franklin V12 PT boat engine sounds like nothing else! Most of the big diesels including that semi diesel in the south end of the Seaport by the shipyard run as well. This summer the Seaport will be opening the Rossi Mill across the street from the Latitude 41 restaurant to the public. There's 500 vessels of all kinds in there, in original and unrestored condition. The rest of their engine collection is in there, too, inboards and outboards.

Wonder how many centuries that engine is capable of running? Talk about under stressed.

My wife and I went to mistic a few years ago and went aboard that whaler. What a wonderful place to visit and blessing to live there.

I've been into wood boats all my life. Fay and Bowen was built in Geneva NY. They didn't plane, just effortlessly moved through the water. Most were in the 28-30 ft range. They are very rare and uber collectable. A restored Fay and Bowen can easily go for over $100,000. Easily. Beautiful lines.

The northeast has many antique and classic boat shows in the summer. The Keuka Lake show is always the third weekend in July, followed by the Skaneateles show. There are still a couple of outstanding builders on Lake George. Nothing like the smell of fresh varnish.

Patrick- the photo you are looking at is not of the same boat. You are correct, catboats by definition do not have headsails.

Nathaniel Herreshoff's Alerion- a lovely design for sure. As I recall, this was a one off at the time for a client who wanted to use the boat in skinny water. The design was pulled out in recent times to build a series of cold molded Alerions on Nantucket.  A mold was made and there are fiberglass Alerions scattered around as well.

FWIW, if you're into wooden boats the Antique Boat Connection in Cincinnati is worth a visit. At one time I was very close to buying a '59 Century Coronado.

UConn used to have a marine science lab in Noank, right next to Ford's lobsters. We could watch the wooden boat parade from the dock. Good memories.
