Title: [Monthly Mutton Bump, May] Flash Mob for Moto Guzzi Mutton Gluttons!
Post by: Bill Hagan on January 05, 2017, 06:57:30 PM
Merry (Twelfth Day of) Christmas!

But, "Flash Mob for Moto Guzzi Mutton Gluttons?"

Yeah, I know.  Weird.

But you are still reading.

So, here's my thinking.  Or what passes for that after my first bourbon after several days of NyQuil.  I am a bit worried about how much I like that green stuff.  :boozing:

Yes, I also know, too many words follow.  Sigh.  My cross, though you help carry it if you keep reading.  Thanks.

For many years -- as in since just after the Civil War -- St. Mary of the Woods parish in Whitesville, Kentucky, has held a picnic.  This has become a big deal locally, with two each year.

The focus is on BBQ.  Mutton, beef, pork, chicken.  The parishioners at St. Mary's are most mindful that the Lord's Prayer mentions "our daily bread," not salad, so this not a vegan event.

OK.  A word of warning.

This thread is not for amateurs from Texas, N.C., K.C., or wherever to weigh in with how their BBQ is better than that from Daviess County, Kentucky.  Save that for folks from the Flat States, California, or Canada, i.e., those who don't know better and might believe your tales.  We won't tell.

Seriously, St. Mary's doesn't parboil meat, then slather it with vile sauces to disguise the damage.  Nope.  Slow-cooked from the start over hickory wood, with (it has been rumored) some anointing with corn-based adult beverages at appropriate intervals during the night by skilled folks who have been doing this for years.

And, bear in mind that using words like "artisan"and other effete expressions will ensure you will not be asked to taste any samples if you happen to arrive at zero-5 or so the day of the picnic.  But that's what these guys are.  Artisans.

When is it? Sunday, 28 May 2017.

Now, with all this notice, it's hard to call it a "flash mob" in the social-media sense, but for folks of most of our ages and sensibilities, it's close enough.  It's certainly not a rally, but would be fun for anyone who can make it.

My plan and that of the several of us who have done this for a few years now is to arrive in Owensboro on Saturday; sightsee a bit; have supper at Moonlite, http://www.moonlite.com; then sip bourbon until past the time we should have stopped.

The next morning (earlyish), we'll ride the <20 miles over to Whitesville and "mess around."  Lines form early.  Some of us will go to Mass.  I've heard there is a Protestant church there, but as Mark Twain said of sunrises in Muscatine, I've never seen it.

Anyway, things start getting really serious about 11, when the parish hall opens its doors to serve the food.

Still interested or annoyed enough to want to know more?

For a visual of the fun some of us had last May at St. Mary's, see the attached pix and this slideshow:

https://bill-and-kathi.smugmug.com/Men-Motorcycles-Mutton/ (https://bill-and-kathi.smugmug.com/Men-Motorcycles-Mutton/)

Two final more-or-less related points.

First, Thomas Clark Hagan (1793 - 1875), whose grave in Whitesville is shown with my Griso in the pic below, was born in Frederick County, Virginia, about 10 miles from our present home north of Winchester, and about a mile from Winchester Motosports, my local Guzzi dealer.  That's destiny.

Second, if you can't make the St. Mary's event, see what's happening in the county seat, Owensboro, two weeks earlier:  http://bbqfest.com.

So, let me know here, by PM. or email if interested in being a Moto-Guzzi Mutton Glutton. While one can't make "reservations," as a matter of courtesy, I'd like to forewarn the parish if a large number actually decided too show up. I've never been arrested by the Swiss Guard, and don't want to start.

Ciao ... & chow.  Hope to see you in Whitesville!

Bill

Enjoy your trip!!

Bill,  As of now, I'm in.  Never rubbed shoulders with you guys, and we are not getting any younger.  I'll be coming from near Duluth MN.  Sounds like a great destination!

Missouri mutton has a curly tail and a snout. I have two Boston butts marinating in horseradish right now. I'll hickory smoke them then cook foil wrapped for a couple of hours then open the foil and fill with sauerkraut. Then cook for another hour or two. Having a family gathering Saturday.

Schwinefliesh und kraut!  (German content)

My German bride would love this!

Thanks for (almost all of ) the comments.

Here are some specific responses.

Bill,  As of now, I'm in.  Never rubbed shoulders with you guys, and we are not getting any younger.  I'll be coming from near Duluth MN.  Sounds like a great destination!

Super, hope Duluth has thawed by May!

Not sure now whether I'll be riding from here at the top off Virginia or Atlanta; long story; will keep you posted.

I'll try to bump this thread as warranted (if I can keep the haters  :violent1: from posting ) with info, but PM your e/m addy or send one to me at wrhagan<AT>earthlink.net so I can add you to the distro as the date gets nearer.

Hmm. 140 miles from my sister Carol's house. I've been meaning to visit - two birds, one stone?

Which direction from Whitesville, Charlie?

My sister  Carole lives in Woodbridge, VA. Not sure how far that is from the bbq, but too far for me to swim 😊

Indubitably re swim.   670 road miles.

I don't care what you put on it, mutton can't be fixed.

You, Sir, are a Philistine.  That can be fixed, but you have to want it.

Yes I did read the entire post!!

Tom

Tom, as a result of your exquisite culinary taste and open-mindedness, I will send you a small sample.

 :food:

Moonlite BBQ ships.  Not quite the Whitesville ambrosia of mutton, but close enough to give you an idea.  PM your 411 info so I can make that happen.

That sounds mmmmighty fine (and I'll bet it was), and St. Mary's does pork, too, but mutton means sheep, even in Mo.  See, e.g,
http://kbia.org/post/chicken-and-mutton-bbq-hot-summer-nights#stream/0

My German bride would love this!

Germans eat mutton, too, not only hogs.  See, e.g., http://www.kochbar.de/rezepte/hammel.html

I would like you to find me BBQ Mutton here in GA. You might find Goat first.

Steve, my first exposure to Whitesville BBQ that I remember was goat.  1958.  I was 11. Mighty fresh, too, as I watched the process from beheading to burgoo.  I remember it as good, but goat is hard to find except in Afghan restaurants, a niche I avoid.

Bill

P.S.  I'll go back and edit this after it posts to delete those maddening symbols that don't appear in preview. Apologies 'til then. [Done]

She lives in Liberty, KY, roughly 140 miles (by road) to the west of Whitesville according to Google Maps.

Charlie,

I now understand how you know so many roads: you get lost.  Liberty is EAST of Owensboro.

OTOH, what's a cardinal direction among Guzzisti?

I know Liberty well.  How different my life would have been had I -- as planned at the time -- gone in with an older lawyer in Liberty after graduating from law school in 1971.  But, ah, the draft changed everything, and here I am.

Best,

Bill

I rarely get truly lost, unless I want to. Wrote that before I was fully awake.

That weekend is also the Cass BMW Rally at Boyer Station. That's been my destination over Memorial Day weekend for the last 10 years, but with the Boyer Station Restaurant no longer open and the next closest one within walking distance (Ryder's/Bear's Den) now closed as well, I'm thinking about a change.

This sounds Excellent. I've never spent much time in Kentucky, and was thoroughly enthralled by the touring I did with the Guzzisti at the last Kentucky Rally. The ride down Andy and Mary from Indy, the three days tooling around the Frankfort area...Intoxicating . Told myself then I had to get back, on two wheels or four, solo or with a lady on my arm (or pillion), and this sounds like just the thing.

I'm in.

let me know where I can pitch a tent.

and to add, when accessing google maps and searching Whitesville, the default image Google presents for the town is of St. Mary of the Woods. Word seems to have gotten out....

I can vouch for mutton BBQ at Moonlite! It's a unique, earthy flavor. Chthonic came to mind, but that's a bit much. I've heard about the Whitesville parish, but never been.

I'll see if I can make it. It would be nice to be in the company of the BBQ cognoscenti.

Great idea!

Cthonic doesn't sound tasty.
Chthonic, which is a form of khthonie and khthonios, has a precise technical meaning in Greek, referring primarily to the manner and method of offering sacrifices to specific deity or deities, generally referred to as chthonic or chthonian deities. These include but are perhaps not strictly limited to Demeter and Hades in classical mythology.

Nocturnal ritual sacrifice was a common practice in many chthonic cults. When the sacrifice was a living creature, the animal was placed in a bothros (βόθρος, "pit") or megaron (μέγαρον, "sunken chamber").[citation needed] In some Greek chthonic cults, the animal was sacrificed on a raised bomos (βωμός, "altar"). Offerings were usually burned whole or buried rather than being cooked and shared among the worshippers.[3]

And your point is, Jim?

You know it is very difficult to find virgins in Daviess County, which may explain how this all got started there.  Sheep were the fall-back victims for sacrifices.

And Moto's use of "earthy" was, IMO, very apt.  It is more than that, but there is a taste and texture to mutton cooked right that evokes images of when some our ancestors toured Europe and elsewhere in longships.

Anyway, sure hope that those of you who have expressed an interest can make it.

Somewhere along the way, we need look into lodging.

Someone -- I'll have to reread the thread to see who that was -- mentioned camping.  Suspect that is quite doable, and perhaps even more easily in Whitesville itself than in Owensboro.  I'll inquire.

I am also beginning to think some sort of tee may be needed.

Yes, I know. I'd been reading Camille Paglia at the time, who uses the term unrelentingly, and it was preying on my mind. It's not too bad a description of mutton BBQ, I thought, referring to the underworld and its deities, the chthonic ones. It's a dark, otherworldly flavor. (American Heritage Dictionary: Chthonic. adjective. Concerning, belonging to, or inhabiting the underworld: a chthonic deity.)

But as we say, YMMV.

Bill, this mutton chow-down sounds like a great time.  Concerned about the flash dance part - beer bellies, suspenders and corn cob pipes flying  - we may not be invited back.  It is a-ways from H-Town, probably will not make it.  But your post was the most entertaining ever, I'm thinking you should work NyQuil in with your regular Bourbon rotation.

Oh, PUHLEESE, Lannis.  You must be feeling especially curmudgeonly this morning.  I am just getting over a bad cold and getting ready to launch to Atlanta -- assuming it has survived the latest "Storm of the Century" -- yet am in a better mood than that.  OTOH, the grappa in my espresso did improve my mood considerably. :coffee: :boozing:

It is my understanding that the general counsel for St. Mary's of the Woods, Daviess County Chamber of Commerce, and, more worrisomely, the American Sheep Industry Association (http://www.sheepusa.org) will soon send you a letter by certified mail.  A summons will soon follow.

Seriously, yours is odd talk from a man who rides motorcycles, as every leg thrown over a saddle and starter thumbed entails real risks ... even more for those who like Brit iron ... well, when those start.

On the dubious merits of your comment, see, e.g., https://consumer.healthday.com/diseases-and-conditions-information-37/misc-diseases-and-conditions-news-203/leprosy-still-occurs-in-u-s-cdc-reports-693260.html

That did, however, give me some pause about grilled armadillo (a mammal, btw ).

Anyway, even if not hardy enough of a soul for mutton, consider coming for the pork, beef, or chicken.  You'd have a fine time.

Bill

P.S.  FWIW, 29 January is World Leprosy Day, yet another cause on a planet filled with worthy ones.

We flew down to the Owensboro bbq festival many years ago. It was a hoot. Brought back a couple of gallons of burgoo (sp?) and had a burgoo and homebrew party.  :thumb:

Bill -

I apologize for my posting laziness and the unfortunate juxtaposition of my post.

I meant ONLY to impugn the human consumption of armadillo, NOT of mutton, beef, pork, and other toothsome barbequed delicacies.   However, forgetting that half-a-dozen posts had been made since the last mention of armadillo, I posted WITHOUT quoting "armadillo" in my post, and so my post showed up in context of the overall thread and NOT in that of armored leprosy carriers.

So, to make it clear:

1) I fully support and appreciate your invitation to the barbeque in May, and am trying to adjust my calendar so I can make it.

2) I believe your intimation that this may well be the finest barbeque in America, and that only a personal sampling, on the spot and at the time, could determine otherwise.

3) I would never eat an armadillo, a rat, a possum, or a balut, I don't care who's fixing it.   But maybe I shouldn't be so public and positive about it, to avoid hurt feelings.   (Although I suspect that there are not many special snowflakes, sensitive to wrong-minded people, cooking armadillos.)

Yours snowily,

Lannis

I hope that Yankees from NY can also be considered as participants in this adventure.  I have never eaten mutton or spent any time visiting Kentucky except when I got lost in Cincinnati (after too much entertaining) and ended up in Covington.

Why is there so much bad feeling about eating dead sheep.  10 million coyotes can't all be wrong.

Oh wait.  Is mutton the same thing as lamb?  If so, then I have eaten it and like it.  Still haven't had much of a Kentucky experience yet though.  Unless watching Davy Crockett on TV as a kid counts.

Mutton is to lamb as Beef is to veal.   Mutton is definitely an "acquired taste".   Perhaps expert barbeque-ers know what to do with it; if I were depending on my culinary talents to make it enjoyable, I haven't acquired it up to now!!

Kentucky is a beautiful state for riding.  Fay and I spent a week and 1800 miles just riding around Kentucky this summer, and enjoyed every mile ...

Howdy from Atlanta ... which seems to have survived yet another "Storm of the Century."  Still a bit crisp, but temps will be in 70's in a few days.

I brought my gear to return brother Michael's Norge from dealer after service and warranty work, so I'll get a ride in.   :bike-037:

Anyway, to return to mutton a moment, unless someone revives it for whatever reason, I'll let this thread lie dormant for awhile, with an occasional bump.

In the meantime, though, if you are inclined to be on my mutton-run mail-outs, send me your email addy by PM or directly to wrhagan<AT>earthlink.net.

Can't say I agree with you there  -  mutton definitely has a lot of taste and especially when compared to lamb.
But acquired taste? When cooked right mutton is fat and succulent and a feast to eat. Who wouldn't like it?
Haven't tried BBQ'd mutton, but it sounds interesting!

I must never have had it cooked right then, which is possible since after the first time I ate it, it was dry as a bone and like chewing on a slightly rank piece of old inner tube.   Just never been in a part of the country where mutton is popular.

I do a lot of shopping in our local markets and butcher shops, and I've never seen anything but lamb for sale, never mutton.   So maybe I have a new and unexpected taste sensation awaiting me!

Try cooking mutton in stock in a pot with vegetables  -  e.g. carrot, leek -  until tender. Could take hours. Mutton and cabbage stew is a traditional favourite here.
We seem to have the same problem with finding mutton in the shops here, only "boring" lamb is offered   :embarassed:
I'll try harder, maybe the shop where I buy horsebeef will get it for me.

This

Lamb = < 1 year old. 1 to 2 years old = hogget. > 2 years old = mutton.

Sheep meat in general and mutton in particular, especially roasted, is my absolute favourite meat.

Sheep meats must be cooked long, slow and thoroughly.  Unlike beef it should never be rare, not even slightly pink inside.  Roasting it should be basted and kept moist.

Serve with mint sauce or jelly, and/or gravy.

Where to get it,  um...ok.

For those who have an interest, I was going to wait a bit for sending along anything more on the Rutt'n for Mutt'n  or Mutton Runners, or whatever -- yes, I am constantly casting about for a label for this outing -- but after I looked at lodging for Kathi and me, thought I'd better pass along some information I got in that process.

First, there is not, of course, an "official" hotel for this.  Stay wherever pleases you.  That said, because of its proximity to the iconic Moonlite BBQ -- https://www.moonlite.com (https://www.moonlite.com) -- several of us have found it convenient to stay before at the Country Inn & Suites.  Kathi and I also stayed there for my 50th H.S. reunion, but I remember nothing much of high school or the reunion.   :boozing:

Anyway, when I tried booking there today, I found it was gone, replaced by, poof, the Wingfield Inn and Suites,  http://www.wingfieldinnandsuitesowensboroky.com (http://www.wingfieldinnandsuitesowensboroky.com).  Same location, and, allegedly, up-gunned a bit from our stay there last year in May.

If, after reading all of this, you wish to join us at the Wingfield, call the motel and ask for "Lilly" [with whom I spoke; a VERY nice lady from nearby Muhlenburg County; we'd have been showing each grandbaby pix if we'd talked much longer!] or "Chris," and mention you are part of "the Hagan group" in order to get the reduced-rate of $95 (from $100).  If you prefer, use email: frontdesk@wiasowensboroky.com.

Do NOT use the website for making a reservation or you'll pay more.  If you end up paying less than $95, call me so I can yell at Lilly.

If you want to share a room, let me know and I'll connect you with others who want to do the same.

If you want to see what else is available, here's a map of Owensboro lodging:

Link here: http://tinyurl.com/OboroKyLodging (http://tinyurl.com/OboroKyLodging)

Do NOT believe the google map prices shown for today.  May is high season for sports teams, and Lilly was not trying to sell me a bridge when she said walk-ins at that time of year might find what Mary and Joseph did in Bethlehem.

Plus, this is Memorial Day weekend, so I am concerned about lodging en route, but especially worried that we can have rooms in Daviess County on arrival.  Our (as in Bill & Kathi's) present plan, btw, is to depart from home, not Atlanta, taking two days.

I will send more coordination info about routes, etc., in due course, but suggest that if you are seriously thinking about this trip, you make reservations somewhere sooner than later.  Let me know sometime where you decided to stay.

Bill

P.S.  I am still exploring camping options in Owensboro & Whitesville, and will let those who have asked me about that know here or by email what I find.

Bill, having gone through your last years epistle, I would love to join you if I could. It looked and sounded right up my ally. It is actually some time since I had mutton, but it has that flavour that lamb or even hogget does not have.

I look forward to reading (with  :gotpics: of course, tales tall and true of the upcoming event.

Just my threatened monthly bump.

Already have more than I expected on the rolls for this.

At least three of us will leave from the top of Virginia on Friday morning, 26 May.

Others from Pa., W.V., Md., Ga., Minn., N.Y. Ind., and more, with all (less one Thursday early bird!) converging from those places by different routes and landing at Owensboro on Saturday afternoon.

Kathi will be driving a "support van" ... tho as it's our Mini, unlikely much room for an extra engine to swap out on the road!

Should be fun.

See lodging info buried in this thread somewhere for where to stay in Owensboro.

Post or PM me with any questions or to be added to the mailing list.

It has to be cooked right Lannis. I tend to at least start the process at a low heat in a sealed roasting dish before cranking it up a bit.

Must admit, even living in a country where we have something like 30,000,000 woolly muttons  running around, most consumption tends to be centred around lamb. The supermarket chains from what I can tell only sell lamb. My favourite would actually be hogget (one year older than lamb) but to even get that a trip to a bonafide butcher would be required.

The St Marys BBQ sounds like my kind of hangout but sadly it wont even make it to my bucket list.

I guess most lambs don't make it to the hogget stage. :undecided:

30 MILLION sheep?!  I have occasionally thought that mutton -- at least in my Kentucky ancestors' case -- was the result of poverty.

Poor Kentucky dirt farmers, at least, didn't eat lamb that would soon produce wool and, eventually, mutton.  At the end of that cycle, and not until, it was mutton time.   :food:

That may also explain johnrs' "charge like a wounded bull" pricing for lamb, which is true here, too. Ditto veal.

The Kid maintains a neurosurgeons airplanes, and had him call me. Talked to him a while last night, and he said if I could tolerate what I'm going through with a ruptured disc, just do that and give it some time. "If you go to a cutter, what they'll want to do is cut, and 9 out of 10 of em should be avoided. (!!) You might just get over it on your own. Send me the MRIs."
Up until last night, I was planning on seeing a cutter on the 13th. I'll still go, depending on what my new friend says. (airplane guys are a closely knit bunch, much like Guzzi guys.)
Actually, I've heard the Kid say, Hi, I'm Brad.. spawn of Chuck. Maybe I'm related to a fish?  He's a good boy..

Poverty had nothing to do with it here. The number used to be well in excess of 60 million until the relatively recent rise in popularity of intensive dairy farming. A dirty polluting business that I would personally like to see a lot less of, or at least regulate out the pollutants that allow the current intensity of it.

The price of sheep meats here has shot up with the demise of city abattoirs. These would take the animals that were less than export standard  (too fat, too lean etc.) and kept the prices down. These days we must pay export prices.

Me, too. There is a 24/7 milking operation by a Dutch company that moved in about 5 miles (as the crow or airplane flies) from us. Manure everywhere, not to mention what it's doing to the aquifer. When the wind is right, there is a pungent odor, too. My old man used to say, "Smells like money, boy.."
True, when you are talking about a family farm. Not so true when you are talking about hundreds of cows.

They're violating the law, I'll bet anything.   If they are managing their waste treatment and their lagoons properly, you won't be able to smell anything.

We have a 6,000 hog hog-raising operation run by a guy I know up the road.   He's taken me around the place a few times.   (You can't go inside because the hogs are cleaner than you are).    The waste is managed properly and you can't smell anything even standing right outside one of the hog houses with 2000 hogs in it.

What's most amazing is how they handle dead pigs.   They have about a 2% mortality rate, which means 120 dead hogs to be disposed of every 5 months.    They put each body in a plastic "mulching" bag, and pile them in a big 3-bay area with open-sided concrete boxes.   After a month, they move the remains (with a front-end loader) into the next bay.   After another month or two, they move them into the next bay.   And after 5 months total, there's nothing left but almost odorless black compost, suitable for fertilizer.

At any rate, if it's properly managed, they don't stink, annoy the neighbors or pollute the groundwater or runoff.   If it's NOT properly managed, get it sorted ... there's no excuse for it.

Title: First Day Lodging & Routing Update Re: Flash Mob for Moto Guzzi Mutton Gluttons!
Post by: Bill Hagan on February 12, 2017, 08:06:31 AM
This is an update with Day 1's lodging and routing information.

Will send this to the email list, but for those still considering this event, here's some information for your consideration.

And, lest the most important point be lost in my usual torrent of words, I need to say that whatever route you take, you may want to make reservations now.  This trip is over the Memorial Day weekend, and into "wedding season," so I have found that many hotels are already full for our dates of travel.

I sure prefer not having fixed interim destinations on motorcycIe trips, but sometimes, well, sometimes ...

Anyway, if you are coming along with us or intend to meet us at end of first day, here's where we are staying:

http://hamptoninn3.hilton.com/en/hotels/kentucky/hampton-inn-ashland-HTSKYHX/index.html

And here are our proposed routes for Days 1 & 2.

Our return will be 2.5 days and go through bourbon country on a more southerly route.  Will post more on that soon.

Day 1 - From Cross Junction to Ashland, Ky.

Details here: https://goo.gl/maps/otLugdF2f7x

Day 2 - From Ashland, Ky., to Owensboro, Ky.

Details here: https://goo.gl/maps/cy4v5nMP6js

We all know that the reality of riding means that the routes won't be exactly those, but they should be close.

Looking forward to seeing others here munching mutton in Daviess County ... and some Mex food en route.

I can't really make any definite plans that far ahead at this point, but the tentative plan so far is to leave here on Friday the 26th and stay in Princeton, WV that night. Continue on to my sister's house in Liberty, KY Saturday, meet up and hang out with y'all on Sunday in Whitesville. Then back to Liberty for the night and head home on Monday and Tuesday.

If anyone would like to ride down or back with me, you're most welcome to.

I can't really make any definite plans that far ahead at this point, but the tentative plan so far is to leave here on Thursday the 25th and stay in Princeton, WV that night. Continue on to my sister's house in Liberty, KY Friday, meet up and hang out with y'all on Saturday in Whitesville. Then back to Liberty for the night and head home on Sunday and Monday.

If anyone would like to ride down or back with me, you're most welcome to.

Great, Charlie.  See you there.

BTW, "there" for hanging around on Saturday for us, anyway, isn't Whitesville, it's Owensboro, tho we will stop at the former late in day on Saturday to see how prep is going.  Think some folks -- you might browse earlier posts -- will be there (Owensboro) as early as Friday.

Just talked to Chris and reserved our room. The game is afoot..  :food:

Super, Chuck; simply super.    :boozing: :food:

Now, FWIW, here is info about the proposed return route we intend take after muttoning.

Kathi has exhibited unusual confidence in the Norge by agreeing to ride it for this trip rather than driving the Mini as a sagwagon.

OTOH, I now have to convince her that she only needs two hair dryers, not three.   :thewife: N.J. Nick is coming along, too, on both legs of this ride, so I'll see if he has extra room in his sidebags.

As the terrain-mode pix, below, show, these are great riding roads.  We plan to stop for a look, but no sips at Makers Mark distillery in Loretto, https://www.makersmark.com.

So, if this routing and lodging plan has any interest among those heading home to points east from Whitesville, here's our thinking.

======

Sunday, 28 May -

Whitesville, Ky., to Lebanon, Ky. (Hampton Inn)

Lebanon, Ky., to South Charleston, W.V. (Hampton Inn)

Tuesday, 30 May -

South Charleston, W.V. to the Moto Grappa

As noted, above, we have reservations at Hampton Inns in Lebanon, Ky., and South Charleston, W.V.

That's really going to be a great ride ... enough stops to enjoy life and the countryside as you ride through, but far enough each day to make some time towards the destination ....

... If the whole thing were offset by just a day or two, I'd be in like Flynn on the home route, probably peel off at Elkins WV to head home, but Family is important, and fun, too ....

Guess I need to revise my tentative schedule - I thought the bbq was on Saturday not Sunday (note to self - read Bill's posts a bit more carefully). Figured they'd be in church all day, not doing a picnic.  So, I guess it'll be here to Princeton on Friday, sister's on Sat., picnic on Sun., back to sister's, departing there for home early Monday and arriving home on Tuesday. Works either way.

Blew my coffee in to the keyboard!

Something similar happened to me when I was a teacher. I had the big annual inspection from The Man From Government and the evening before I had head all my stuff out in the alcove all ready for the following day. Overnight a pipe ruptured and the whole ground floor was awash in the morning. I gathered up the sodden mess and tried to dry it out a bit but failed. I took it in anyway; I explained it really was all there but we had a slight mishap at home. I don't know whether he wanted to laugh or cry. He managed to pry a couple of pages apart, saw it did have stuff on it, managed to translate some of my waterwashed notes and saw enough to ok me for another year. Fortunately most of my notes were on the computer and could me reprinted. but some were not.

Had a major (6-couple brunch) social event here at house yesterday, with that meaning a few weeks of "enhanced spring cleaning" under "close supervision"  :thewife: , so no time until now to get back into Moto Grappa.  Headed down there shortly to make sure Norge is ready.

It is funny Nick but as johnr said in a previous post, mutton is not easy to come by, it is all lamb. The main town in what is very much an isolated farming community does have on it's shelves the odd bit of mutton. As I was scrutinizing the shelves with an intense scrute I noticed MUTTON chops. So,  :food: :food:

This is the final monthly bump for the Mutton Mutiny and its Muttoneers!

No promises, however, that there won't be additional coordination posts here or separately.  If those are driving you nuts, just ignore 'em.

Anyway, I googled "mutton" and "mutiny," and this was the best I could do:

BLUF: Cease Fire!

I surrender.

The weather does not worry me.  As I think Ken Hand said, “If everybody watched weather channel, no one would ride!”

A sodden run, punctuated by delays of T-storms, would, however, take the fun out of it for Kathi, with whom I was looking forward to making the trip two-up.

But, the real warstopper is not rain, but illness.

I have been sick (and literally in bed) since last Sunday.  Some sort of one-two punch from a 24-hour bug -- complete with [TMI follows] projectile vomiting that missed the porcelain target by yards  -- with a sinus infection accomplice.  I have been out once, to the doc, and that didn’t help.  Just one of those wait-it-out things.  I am still waiting.  If anything, worse today than before.

I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in this result.  Have been planning this for months and looking forward to the reunion with Guzzisti and others as the centerpiece of this season’s riding.  But, I suppose that even I must now and then exercise good judgment and do the right thing.

I may go back in and whine to the docs again today, as their last counsel hasn’t changed anything.

Anyway, regrets to all.  Hope some go despite rain.  You'll have a fine time.

Bill

P.S. I cancelled first-night's motel in Ashland, but may leave in a small escape valve in case I am miraculously cured.  Kathi and I might drive down on Saturday in the Mini, but even that is likely false hope.

Good for them.  I envy them.

You missed my point.

Bill

It's not like Bill doesn't ride in the rain - our trip with Travman down to the WV Mountain Guzzi Rally comes to mind. Real "gully washer" on some parts of the ride, with flooded fields threatening to cover the road. Been There Done That.

Yikes! Sorry about that, Bill.
Are the east coasters still coming? Nick?
Moto, you still coming from Wisconsin?
If nobody is coming, the Kid and I will head direct to Wheels through time. and I'll need to cancel a couple of hotels.

I've been on the fence the whole time. Love mutton BBQ and would like to meet a bunch of you all.

But I'm limited in the time I can be away from home. My wife is leaving on a business trip Tuesday morning and my son still needs to be fed and watered when she's away.

So it would be a 500-mile wet trip down the Interstates of Illinois, dinner, and then 500 miles back up (admittedly in better weather) to get home before she leaves. My most recent trip down South -- my Derecho Days of Thunder tour to Arkansas and the Natchez Trace -- taught me that things can "go south" in another way quickly, and that I should pay more attention to weather forecasts.

If I were headed out for a longer trip in that direction, I'd be there for sure. But unless there are more coming than it sounds like, I think I'd be better off passing.

Bill, Charlie -- sorry not to have the chance to meet you. Bill, get well! Chuck, we did meet briefly a while back, and I was looking forward to seeing you too.

Dang.

Oh No! Gutted!

Bill, I hope you recover soon. Sounds nasty.

To those still going, enjoy the  :food: and I still hope to see a report back on the proceedings

That does it. I just cancelled my reservations for Saturday and Sunday night. We have friends in Mooresville, N.C., so we'll visit them first, then go south.

I'll be at Willville Fri-Sat-Sun-Mon. Just need to find a restaurant that serves lamb chops. 👍

Owensboro Ushers in Summer Series of Parish Barbecue Picnics

Owensboro, KY,  May 2015 / Newsmaker Alert / Owensboro's International Bar-B-Q Festival early each May is only the start of a summer of hickory-flavored festivities.
From May through the end of September, the area's Catholic churches celebrate tradition and raise a bit of money, too, at 22 parish barbecue picnics that serve tasty chicken, pork, mutton and burgoo to all comers. All are within a 45-minute radius of downtown Owensboro.

"Travelers crave authentic food experiences, and there's nothing more authentic than western Kentucky barbecue and burgoo prepared by an experienced church cooking team. They're serious about their barbecue and burgoo," said Shannon Wetzel, executive director of Visit Owensboro.

Burgoo, for the uninitiated, is a meaty stew that originated in pioneer days. Along with barbecue mutton, it is one of the region's traditional foods.

You'll see burgoo bubbling in 60-gallon cauldrons at parish picnics. Sometimes, there are a half-dozen cauldrons in a row, each tended by stirrers who use long wooden paddles to keep the burgoo in motion.

"Some parish picnics are more elaborate than others, but you'll often find cakewalks, kiddie rides, quilt raffles and other diversions to go along with all of that wonderful barbecue," Wetzel said.

One is quite special -- the June 27 picnic at St. Mary Magdalene Parish. It will be the parish's 100th summer picnic. The St. Mary Magdelene cooking team has special bragging rights this year as winner of the Governor's Cup at Owensboro's International Bar-B-Q Festival.

Just seeing the meat on the fire is a spectacle. The cooking teams erect pits that can be 50 feet or more long and hold hundreds of chickens, along with dozens of pork butts and mutton quarters.

It's easy to make a full weekend out of a parish picnic by combining it with Owensboro's "Friday After 5," a summer-long concert and family entertainment series. "Friday After 5" features many styles of music on five stages at RiverPark Center and in Smothers Park along the Ohio River.

Well said, Moto; I should have included something like that along the way.

BUT BEWARE!

Not all of those events prepare their mutton (and etc.'s) the way St. Mary's does.

In other words, many (indeed, most) "cheat" as do so many retail establishments around this country that parboil the meat before putting on the grill for finishing.

IMO, only S L O W and L O W fires give it the flavor.  All the sauces in the world are nothing more than cheap perfume on a brothel's employee.

Regrettably -- well, actually not, though I wish I'd planned ahead a bit more; never my strength  -- Kathi and I will be Italy when St. Mary's has its fall picnic.  Sure hope some here get there.

Grazie again.

Well, maybe next spring's event!

In the meantime, how do you suppose one could research the particular methods of preparation at these events, short of going to each one? (Not that that's a bad-sounding plan.)

What a list of food events!   And I always thought Baptists were the ones who'd use any excuse to have a covered dish supper.   They can't hold a candle (so to speak) to these guys ....

Beautiful morning at Willville

Yep, that's Corfield's bike on the right. He stopped by on a "VA rally coordinating run", and ended up spending the night.

This morning's “local” breakfast

BTW I've been calling area's restaurants and, so far, not one has lamb chops on the menu! (http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s180/ndicroce/emoticons/TFR99.gif) (http://s152.photobucket.com/user/ndicroce/media/emoticons/TFR99.gif.html)

Hope you feel better Bill.
