...castles and fortresses [mostly photographs]
« on: May 15, 2019, 04:30:25 PM »
I’m not really searching these places out, but there are a lot of castles throughout Europe to stumble across while just riding around.  Some of you must have others?

You might recognize at least some of these:

In the movie “Monte Python and the Holy Grail”, the castle that is named…  “He who is valiant and pure of spirit may find the holy grail in the Castle of Aaauuuggghhh...”

In that same Monte Python movie, a different castle from which our heroes are taunted by a very rude French soldier.

The castle climbed by Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood in the movie “Where Eagles Dare.”

The castle where Count Dracula once lived.

King Ludwig's

Well done.  As you can tell by my photograph of Neuschwanstein Schloss (above), I didn't get any closer than the valley, well below.  I've never been through it.

Thanks for the interesting photos. Must have been a lot of employment opportunities or stone workers back in those days.

I was born in a small town named Nieder Beerbach, which is in Germany and is located between Frankfurt and Heidelberg on the Bergstraße. Just above my parents house, about a 15 minute hike up a small mountain, stands Burg Frankenstein or Frankenstein Castle. A friend of mine, back from my kindergarten and elementary school days, parents were the castles caretakers and lived up in this the castle, so I also got to spend many nights up there with my friend. This castle is open to the public, and it is really not that special when comparing it to many other European castles, but for me, it will always be a special place, since it is part of my former home and childhood. I even have a couple of the castles building stones which came from a collapse fortification wall sitting on my fireplace mantle.

I went through a couple of castles, Rheinfels ruins on the Rhine and Ludwig's (Neuschwanstein) which is fabulous.  But it's a heck of a walk up there or for that matter stooping under the ruins at Rheinfels.

Another neat place is Rothenburg, which is an entire Medieval city built as fortress.  Walls all around it on top of a hill.

Nice nice nice.

Saw a fair few as we sailed the Rhine/Main/Danube.

I bet they were cold holes to live in in winter!

A quaint collection of stone cottages in Europe.
