‘14 Stelvio power Commander
« on: November 01, 2019, 12:36:19 PM »

Alright- looking at fueling mods- I’ve seen Todd at GTMoto offers a reflash/Power Commander/Autotune kit, but it’s pricey.  I have a 2-channel Autotune already, and figure I could use Guzzidiag to disable O2 sensor input, and use a tune from Beetle or whoever with a power commander, and end up with the same result.

My real question is- what model power commander and where to buy from? Dynojet doesn’t list a PC for newer Stelvio- is the one GTMoto is selling for a different bike, or just earlier Stelvio, and the reflash/autotune is what makes it all work together?

Just buy a map from Beetle or ask John, who posts as Xltra if you can use his. Either that or roll your own map with Tunerpro. PC's are an outdated and very flawed product unnecessary in this day and age.

John's screen name is Xlratr .

What Pete is say is correct , and beetle will create a working map for your bike at 1/4 the cost of GT's *solution* .

Alright- looking at fueling mods- I’ve seen Todd at GTMoto offers a reflash/Power Commander/Autotune kit, but it’s pricey.

Over the years I had read the scuttlebutt around the lodge concerning the excessively rich fueling that can overwhelm the engine and the lubrication system with disastrous results.

A couple of years ago, I saw evidence of it first hand.

There was a late model Stelvio 15K kms in excellent condition at a fair price. The salesperson pointed out that it was basically a brand new bike, because the crankshaft had gone bad, and the engine was just replaced with a new factory one, as a bonus, included in the bike was the GT fuel mods which had been installed from day one, by the PO.

I passed on the bike, it sure sounded like the fuel system that had killed the first engine was still installed, fwiw ymmv.

Guzzidiag, a set of cables and a Beetle map, and I think you'd be happy.

     Good luck

The Beetlemap is a far better option than PC. I know from my own experience. I Beetlemapped both my Griso and my now departed Norge. The Norge came from the original owner with the PCV/Autotune installed by Todd himself. It was an overfueled mess. I removed the PCV/Autotune and installed the Beetlemap. It was like night and day. I wish I had done a before/after video. Beware snake oil salesmen touting overpriced “remedies”.

Thanks for all the input so far, seems there fans of either.  My bike came with modded air box lid, and supposedly was tuned for it, not impressed.  Swapped on a stock lid, not impressed either.

First and foremost take the PC crap off and just tune it properly. Make sure the PO hasn't played around with the throttle stop screw or throttle linkage rod, balance the TB's, reset the TPS, (As long as the throttle stop screw is unmolested.) put an unsullied airbox lid on it and see what happens. I'm sure I've detailed how to tune a W5AM bike a dozen times so try a search. You will need two cables and a laptop with Guzzidiag loaded to perform the TPS reset, (Or an expensive alternative from a charlatan.). On no account try to change the idle speed by turning the throttle stop screw.

The only reason there are fans of PC’s over P roper (Beetle) maps, is because the owner of the messed up bike has yet to see how good the alternative would be.
I can’t comment on the efficacy of a Beetle map on an 8V, but the results on my 2VPC are astounding.
You can save yourself time and money by just doing it..!
Buy the Beetle map.
It couldn’t be any clearer.

Well Frenchy...? You’re right.
From the time I rode into Pete’s shop, ‘till the time I rode out on a completely different bike that stood up well against a properly mapped and tuned 8V Griso up to 180 kph..was about 1 1/2 hours..
And since then have done 500 k’s on 22 litres on one particular occasion.
That’s fast enough for me..

Big difference is that Pete is a smart , thorough guy and has witnessed some of the problems caused by over-fuelling ! I bet most of the pros who install the power commanders haven't come across those issues which is why they stand by them. He's also seems  so
experienced in the process and marque that he can do it quickly now...I'm sure that with maybe one exception , most of the technicians around here would avoid mapping and go for the quick bolt on " solution ". That's neither criticism nor adulation on my part ...just that there are very very few Guzzi specialists around now for obvious reasons.

We might be losing something in translation , a beetlemap isn't difficult to install , Mark makes it simple and works with his customers , it doesn't take a specialist to install his maps . In the end it is simpler than dealing with the problems caused by overfueling  from employing  other *fixes* .

Beetle has made his maps so easy to install. Just follow his excellent step by step instructions. I could have remapped 5 bikes in the time it took to untangle and remove the stupid PCV/Autotune from my Norge.

I'm not saying that re mapping is that hard but most of us , myself included , have not got a clue as to the whole guzzi diag set up works. It takes time and patience to learn this.I'm sure I'd get there eventually (and would enjoy the "challange " too ) and that most younger more computer literate folk would find it easier...However , to put in one of those en-richening devices would be a lot simpler to me and most of those guys...so that's one reason why they are popular...they are plug and play and just need a simple rewire.

I've been trying to suggest to several french frinds to take the beetle route but there seems to be a resistance to that....not even linguistic as most of them speak good enough English and if not i'd gladly translate.Of course if Bettle was French, then to them his solution would be the get go !

There is an entire thread on GuzziDiag . If you can operate a computer you can install a beetlemap . I understand what you are saying , however it simply isn't valid in this case , there is literally no reason to fear using GuzziDiag , you won't brick an ECU .

Yes I realise that Dusty....one of the great references in the Guzzi world right here...I'm still on carbs...but bellagios are coming down in price to a sum where i could maybe go for one if i sell something else due to space considerations. It's tempting and if I do go for it then I'll start studying the whole bizz. At the moment it is all academic and I'm much more of a hands on learner anyway.....
The guys who set up Guzzi diag have done a mighty job and really deserve so much congratulations and thanks.......

It is much easier to use Guzzidiag, Reader and Writer than it is to get the very limited PC software to work. It also doesn't require chopping into the loom like fitting a PC does. The adjustments that a PC makes are very crude. A correctly written map addresses far more than simply fuel and spark.

Seriously, NOTHING TO LEARN....  if you can tie your shoes, turn on your computer, change spark plugs, or oil. you can use Guzzi Diag, read and write maps. If you cant, you should just stay in bed.............

Most difficult part is knowing which reader/writer program to download, and figure out which com port your laptop is using. NOTHING to learn..... Totally logical to follow.

GUZZI DIAG
1 Know.Set preferences (identify bike and com port)
2 Connect - follow instructions.... things like turn ignition on and click OK.

READER/WRITER
Know what program you need (set by your bikes ECU)
Know what port your USB is using
Follow directions....

There is literally nothing to it....

I can use Guzzidiag, reader and writer. It can't be hard. I am only borderline computer literate!

The simple thing to remember is that if you do have problems someone will be along to help you if you just ask. If you just have a big dummy-spit and shriek like a little girly with a sandy 'gina then people will point and laugh and blow raspberries in your general direction!

I know all that ! Like I said i'll get on the bus very willingly when i need to....so why do so many owners still buy the en-richening widgets????From reading the forums it seems much more popular then remapping ...and I don't get it.I've suggested my theory as to why ....

If you are talking about the *other* Guzzi forum , it is because no one is allowed to discuss any solutions not sold by the owner .

I have successfully installed Beetle'a maps on my 2015 V7, 2015 Norge, and 2016 Griso.  All bikes experienced wonderful transformations afterward.  And of course, after a proper "Roper tune" for the 8Vs.

The instructions are so easy to follow it made even a caveman like me feel like an expert.

No Dusty...I've not been there for ages for various reasons...I'm talking several facebook groups, several French Guzzi Forums and the Uk ones...nearly everyone there seems to be fitting widgets rather than remapping ...you'd think re mapping was some kind of dark, hidden voodoo best done in a disused church yard and never mentioned in public ! I realised the ins and outs of both methods thanks to the info gleamed here from ages ago...I just find it odd that there is less knowledge elsewhere.
And it's great to hear from yet another person how efficiant the re maps are Dave !

Probably a result of marketing , consumers fall for shiny object advertising very easily . Buy this , it will fix all of your problems , no work involved or need to educate yourself . The people who manufacture aftermarket add on solutions are in the business of making money , not telling the truth .
There were adds in every major motomag here advertising these little plastic fans that when installed in your intake would add power , increase fuel mileage , and make you better looking . They were nothing more than the blades from computer cooling fans , and yet people bought and installed them . Mark (beetle) offers a low cost solution that fixes the underlying problem and won't ruin your motor .
