My 2012 NTX has the older style lunch pale locks ,they can be left in the unlocked position,I rarely lock mine.I added rubber cushions or bumpers to the bottom corners of the windshield where it rubbed on the fairing.
My 2009 has the lunch-pail locks too, but they could not be left unlocked because the key wouldn't come out unlocked.
However, after 52,000 miles of hard use, the lock cylinders failed (all four of them, they're pretty cheap stuff), so I just pulled out the lock cylinders and now they work fine. It's very convenient to be able to just flip them open and shut with no key. Locally, I don't need to lock them, and on trips I don't leave anything in them that needs to be locked up.
That's sort of cheating, I know.
